How did they manage to do it? Most developers optimized for one input method and others felt like an afterthought.

I think it really is as simple as they actually took the time to test and improve with the whole lineup of Playstation inputs. I don't think anything special happened other than they cared more.

The steering feels surprisingly smooth and intuitive to this day but why didn't GT1 or 2 have analog throttle/brake? Even Porsche Challenge (1997) had that. Play that game with the bumper cam and analog sticks and it's some of the smoothest driving ever because the steering and throttle are infinitely adjustable with no deadzones.

It controls like garbage and the cars feel like tanks. It's like none of the Japs who made these games ever drove a car

Also zero personality or charm, just throwing as many cars at you as they can and generic random courses

driving at high speeds is no joke. I almost hit 100 driving home from an amusement park in a mostly empty highway. I was trying to get it that high but my girlfriend was scared to death, gave me hell for the rest of the weekend.

GT1 has overall the best car handling physics among 5th gen consoles for sure. There are more realistic games (i.e. GT2) but they are not as fun.

I'm quite vocal about bitching about GT2. It does have tons of benefits, including more tracks and better car handling physics. But it's attempt to appeal to a "wider audience" and simplify the game reall hurt it. GT1 knows what it wants to do and just does it. GT2 tries to be 20 different things at once and doesn't do them all right.

GT2 problems:
>completley half implimented Rally mode which clearly ate up tons of dev time and has half the new tracks you barely see
>Cups are cut up into single races, with different licsense requirements, and different HP requirements, making you constantly start and stop, ruining the flow of gameplay
>slog of shitty tracks dominates the early to mid game and are just a drag to play
>Tahiti road, Super Speedway, Grindlewald, Rome Short, Rome Long, Seattle short, Seattle long, Laguna Seca just dominate the game and range from utter shit to mid
>every single fantasy track from GT1 was 10/10
>Special Stage Route 11 removed from the game
>Rome Night is strangely barely in the game
>Normal Car Cup gone
>No requirement for most of the events unlike 1 other than HP

I agree with that other poster, have you ever driven a car or played this game? Ps1 racers all feel like they're on ice, no friction on the tires. Even the sims drive like arcade games, but they're still fun to play. Gt always had weak course selections.

SSR11 is one of the best courses, and it's nuts it's not in GT2. As a bonus, it's the easiest to nudge AI cars into crashing into barries at the shicane.

I've done 230km/h in an 87 camaro. That's as high as the spedomoter went. It felt ready to leave the ground so yeah...
160 km/h was easy cruising. Drove Vancouver to Ottawa from Monday morning to Wednesday evening.

Modern gt is a slog because realistic racing is a slog. I don’t care for Latina seca at all. Gt1 has that right balance of more realistic handling, suspension, but it’s all goegeous fantasy tracks and sports car races for 3/4 of it rather than a gritty gt300/500 sim. The music is all jazz fusion and blaring guitars to rep the feeling of driving a nice sports car. The tracks are all mountains, bridges, tunnels, Japanese streets, or Forrests. Not realistic at all, but evokes driving in lush scenery in your sports car.

When I play gt I want to drive an mr2, corvette, supra, skyline, rather than a real racing car. Real racing is boring.

It's way more realistic than 90% of "tuner" games that depict amateur racers like Mid Night Club as gang deliquents who drive recklessly as opposed to track day car nerds that they were irl.
The only way for GT1 to be more realistic is include irl tracks and tuner shops but fantasy tracks are better anyway.

It's not that the tracks in GT1 were more unrealistic besides certain low poly limitations with elevations and curbs but that real tracks in 1997 were a lot less awful for video games, especially for slow cars.
