I'm just getting into shoot 'em ups and I'd like some recommendations of shmups with a story, kinda like an RPG shmup, if there's any.
I'm currently playing Radiant Silvergun and its great, but I still can't get very far, so I haven't seen how the story unfolds (I've only been able to reach stage 4). Or is there anything to shmups like what Catherine is to puzzle games?

The closest I can think of is Fray CD. Some of the SEGA CD and Turbo CD shmups like Keio Flying Squadron and Lords of Thunder also have a story, complete with fully voiced cutscenes.

If you like Radiant Silvergun also check out Dezaemon 3D on N64 or Treasure's other shmups, Bangai-O and Ikaruga on Dreamcast.

Idk about the story but you might like Einhander on PS1 as it's by Square

Ikaruga because of the fun gimmick
Eco Fighters for the same reason
Espgaluda because of the Euro trash soundtrack and peak intentional slowdowns
Usually my recs

Not sure what's so special about Silvergun that people keep making threads about it (other than it being Sega and this board is infested with Sega fanboys)

Be aware though that only the first level looks like a cool futuristic city with lots of detail everywhere. Rest of the game is deserts and factories. Almost false advertising

I'll give it a shot sometime. Futuristic city is definitely better than deserts and factories though, so that's not too good.

To be honest, I've bought Ikaruga, but didn't like the switching mechanic. But I'll play it for a few hours someday, I know I can't really say I don't like it if I don't take the time to learn it.
Espgaluda is a great game, but I don't remember any story (but that's a great rec anyway).
About Radiant Silvergun, there's something about the not so dynamic gameplay of learning each stage and finding your way to deal with each section that is different from the bullet hell craziness of dodging and learning to identify patterns. I'm sure more experienced players can give you a better answer, but to me, these bullet hell games have a whole different appeal than these slower shmups, where you have time to see the backgrounds, listen to the music, look at the enemies, the not so convoluted patterns, make your route a little better, etc... in Espgaluda or Mushihimesama my head just doesn't have time to enjoy everything that is happening. But again, I'm pretty bad at both genres of shmups

Where do games like Space harrier, Star Fox and Panzer Dragoon fall into the shmup question? I do enjoy them more than the average 2D shooter

They are rail shooters, not shmups

Rail shooters are a different genre than shoot 'em ups (shmups), but they are both shooters.

Aliens attack and you must destroy them.
Seriously why would you want more story than that?
The only worthwhile shmup cut scene is the "all your base" intro to Zero Wing.
