I had the same issue with the Dragon boss in Mega Man 2. I could reach him without issue, but I kept trying to fight him while running away before his health bar even appeared, and would always fall to my death. Years later I saw Arino beat him and found out you just have to run until the screen stops scrolling. Then I beat him on my first try.

I really wanted to get a 1CC 100% run of Sonic 1 at some point, and this was often the point that killed my attempts... I did eventually though, it's not the hardest time when you're used to it, it's all about memorization with Sonic, once you get familiar with hazards and the sections you have the most trouble, it's easier to prepare and even avoid them depending on what they are I guess.

>> No.10356091

Sonic gives you tons of lives and continues but you don't need them. As long as you have 1 ring you are effectively invincible.

>> No.10356579

>>10356091
No it doesn't. The most common way (or is it the only way) to get a continue is by collecting 50 rings in a special stage. So you need 50+ rings by the end of the level and need to go through the ring then collect another 50 rings. You can only get special stages in acts 1 and 2. No new person is holding onto their 50 rings in Scrap Brain. You have to earn every life and continue beyond your three starting stock. If you try to blitz through the levels you will find yourself fairly life and continue deprived. Then rings don't matter if you fall into a bottomless pit, get crushed, or drown. Labyrinth Zone has crushing and drowning. Starlight has bottomless pits. Scrap Brain has bottomless pits and crushing. Holding onto that one ring means jack shit. Can you not fathom how a new player might have a little trouble?

Indeed, you have 10 shots at best to go to the special stages, for 6 emeralds... though it gets easier over time, the Sonic 1 special stages are simple enough once you get the hang of it, I've managed to get a 100% 1CC recently, it got fun even once I mastered them.

When I was younger that was my experience. I'm not sure young me ever saw past Labyrinth Zone. The basic trick in LZ is to just not rush it. Play it safe. That final ascension in OP can be nerve wrecking when you start hearing the warning sound for drowning but there is plenty of time to get there. Same applies for the special stages. Take your time to avoid going into a freefall.

WE ARE EVERYWHERE

I' not even a zoomer I just suck at sonic. Mario for NES was more my style, I really "got"the way he moves. I can hardly compare 2d sonic games to castlevania, it doesnt seem similar outside of those similarities that are inevitable between two 2d platformer games.

The guy has a weapon and just "stops" when you stop pressing the move button. Does anyone else consider that to be like its own section of the platforming genre? Idk how to express it... To me, even in 3d platformers, the floatiness or momentum of the character and their movement makes a platformer what it is.

It's what made Mario 64 better than lots of knockoffs. Even way later on, games like Rachet&Clank/Jak&Daxter for the ps2 felt lackluster to me in comparison despite those games being chock full of features that Mario 64 didnt have. Rachet and Jak are just dead potato sack puppets. In fact they are worse because a potato sack would twirl and slide and express actual movement if you were to fling it somewhere.

Felt that way playing "shoot em up" oriented platformers, and even though you dont have a gun in Castlevania it feels that way because it's got 99% of the rest of it and has 0% of the movement freedom feeling that I associate with it being fun to jump. Jumping is not innately fun by itself, I don't feel "WEE!" when a character does the same exact arc to the same exact height and distance they did every other time. It's like that doesnt require any play from me. The game could just habdle such jumping the way 3d Zelda handles jumping, if it's gonna be the same jump regardless of what I have done /how I have moved leading up to it

I definitely recommend the 8-Bit Sonic titles, at least Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, since they remind me of Mario more... also, Sonic Pocket Adventure, it really feels like a Sonic 2 demake, but it has this save system, so losing all of your lives is less of a problem, it also feels way simpler than Genesis' titles. Also, don't forget to press down to roll on slopes, it speeds Sonic up and protects him too.

P.S. Avoid the Game Gear's Sonic 2, play the one on Master System instead, it's 10x more fun...

The least satisfying "boss" in the game. Labyrinth and onwards is just unpleasant. The point where you are no longer playing a fun game but and just begrudgingly doing a chore.

Indeed, the screen resolution wasn't really taken in consideration by Aspect in the same way it did by Ancient with 8-Bit Sonic 1, the 1st boss is all it takes for anyone to realize this, they really failed the Game Gear... but the Master System version? Here you can actually appreciate all of the effort Aspect put into this sequel, to take what worked in Sonic 1 and expand upon it, and it's excellent.

You beat Castlevania, but can't beat Sonic? That's wild. I found the Sonic games to be fairly easy, but I just can't beat some of those classic Castlevanias. I've beaten all of the Igavanias, Castlevania 4, and Rondo of Blood, but as a fan of the series, I'm deeply ashamed to admit that I just could not finish Castlevania 1, 3, and Bloodlines for the life of me. I want to play 2 sometime soon since it looks doable, just to add 1 more Classicvania to the Beaten list.

This part of labyrinth zone definitely tripped me up for a while though, when I thought I had to actually hit Robotnik. I was screaming at the screen "for fucks sake, how perfect does my platforming need to be??" I felt stupid but relieved when I found out you just have to get to the top, and you can actually take your time to jump up carefully.
