Thoughts on thicc scanlines? Y/N? There's a guide on Reddit on 240p for PC monitors and this is the result. I tested it and while it does look like this, stuff like Super Mario World looks all kinds of fucked when in movement. Of course, none of these lines show up, even at 240p, on a TV. It honestly made me wonder if it was even worth the effort of using 240p on a CRT TV if you're not gonna notice a difference.

Movement should look perfectly fine. If movement looks messed up then it's an emulation problem, a scaling problem, you're using 120Hz without black frame insertion, or if you are not emulating then something unfortunate is happening somewhere in the video chain.

It might be the black flame insertion (which I didn't do). Part of the guide is setting the refresh rate to 160hz because I'm using an adapter, and after doing that I didn't change anything on the emulator itself.

>> No.10352437

Eh, honestly this doesn't look anywhere close to a TV, even a big one with high TVL. It's missing the variable height of the "pixel" being lit up depending on its brightness among other things.
I'd say to just play games intended for a TV on a TV and games intended for a monitor on a monitor.

>> No.10352463

I don't know about the BIOS but you should be able to get GRUB to do 240p if your video card supports such a mode through VESA BIOS Extensions. Once you are out of the console and into X you can run any video mode your card and monitor supports by adding a modeline in xorg.conf. If you are actually trying to do this from WIndows then I don't know.

>>10353278
The two JVC and two Panasonic are 13 inches and have both composite and S-Video. The BVM is 8 inches and composite only. All are professional monitors. If you are OK with the size and they don't have burn in get them. If one has burn in but the other like one doesn't get both so you have spare parts. Also, if they are giving away the SVHS deck take that as well.

Same anon here.
I looked into it.
There is a shader in RetroArch called VHSPro.
If you turn off all the tape-related features it will allow you to add signal noise that is similar to what you would get from a weak cable TV signal.
I have combined it with the Grade shader to muck it up even more and the result is something reminiscent of C-band programming, but you still will not get the reflections and ghosts that are natural to OTA signals.
I will have to do more research.

I'd turn off the lights in the room first. Then use ISO as low as it gets, usually 100 or 200 gets the job done. 1/60 shutter speed for NTSC, 1/50 for PAL. 1/30 and 1/25 can also work with static images, but for that you'll probably want ISO 100 only. Shooting from an angle helps with moire/focus problems. For white balance you'll have to eyeball it so it looks more or less the same as IRL.

I have an apple tv 1, they are cheap and have component/composite output. I'm running this kodi build which is fairly outdated but does the job, the youtube addon still works with it also

https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=363320

out of the box the appletv 1 doesn't support 1080p video but you can get a Broadcom CrystalHD BCM70015 which is also cheap youll maybe be paying like 30 dollars or so for the setup maybe mroe if you wanna put an ssd in there but id highlky recommend this setup you can get very clean 480i output and play 1080p video as long as its not 10bit or above. this is the best media device that natively support component i have been able to find

to get the same results as 480p/60 with a scanline filter, which is much more flexible and less hassle
not to mention, BFI with 120hz for 60hz content, you're still compensating, even with your super bright mode, you're scanning an image with twice the speed, the beam at 60hz doesn't take as long to go back to start as the black frame at 120hz, it just scans the image slower, excites the phosphors better and draws the next image right after having drawn the previous one

but if it works for you, have fun, that's all that matters, I just don't see the point personally

Modern subtitles are obviously made for modern screens and sometimes are too low.
You can't adjust this with the PS3 so sometimes it will cut the subtitles in the middle.

Yeah, you could go straight from the VGA output to the VGA2NTSC converter, if it works like it claims. Haven't used it though. You'd still have to set up custom modes though but those aren't hard to google.

Would just creating a custom res like this work?

>> No.10386318

>>10386249
Technically yes but you need to set the proper sub-timings, auto doesn't usually work. Plus you need to adjust your porches to properly center your picture and not lose a lot to overscan (you can do that with your CRTs service menu too, if your CRT supports it). CRU is generally better for creating custom modes and lets you fine tune more.

You can find plenty of 15kHz modes for different consoles etc online, just google for 15khz modelines.

Like:
https://www.. improwis. com/tables/video.webt
https://www.. geocities. ws/podernixie/htpc/modes-en.html
(space after the dot since 4chan thinks it's spam)

Take your time to learn about the timings, it will help you configure things for your setup if you know what each does.

P.S. you can use super resolutions too, like 2560x240p, theoretically better quality and helps with emulators for aspect ratio correction.

Here's a CRU config file you can import and try. Remember to select the HDMI or DP adapter first from the list, don't accidentally overwrite your main monitor (you can reset to default though by just deleting the profile and restarting your PC).

https://files.catbox.moe/onpb3q.bin

You can try that, should work with any normal NTSC or PAL set. Has some common resolutions and refresh rate for more popular consoles. RetroArch can auto switch resolution and refresh rate itself when CRT SwitchRes is enabled and the adapter is set as output, set the super resolution width to 2560, it will look squished when it's displaying the desktop but RetroArch will adjust itself to display the proper aspect ratio.
Remember to never feed 31kHz into your CRT TV (if it accidentally happens, quickly turn off the TV), always turn on the TV after you're already booted into your OS, otherwise it might output 31+ kHz turning bootup. The profile linked has only 15kHz modes, so once you're booted, it won't accidentally switch to a 31+ kHz mode.

Good luck and have fun.

What is actually sharpness on CRTs? On LCDs I know it's just a shitty post processing filter, but on my CRT I need at least a little bit for the image not look all blurry. If it's a filter, why's 0 not "disabled"?

>> No.10388195

The PS1 version works on a PS2, but the controller support is buggy. DS2 won't work for me at all, while DS1 registers too many inputs at once, so it's kinda hard to get around the menus. It's fine otherwise.
Try restarting the console a few times, mine is a bit finicky with PS1 imports and CD-Rs, kinda hard to make it boot them sometimes, but once it boots everything is OK, without any FMV/CD audio skipping or anything. Might be the modchip that's at fault here, compared to my PS1 that has major skipping issues on CD-Rs, so that's just a weak laser.

So I've been pissing around trying to get the PSP version of SO2 to not look like ass somehow, which ends up involving cranking the rendering resolution to the moon to try to get the assets to display without the fucked up display scaling they did to make them fit on the PSP screen (mind you the way this game is made with sprites and pre-rendered backgrounds moving in in 3D is kind of fucked up even on PS1) and then getting a display resolution that's an even fraction of that. Putting it on my CRT monitor letterboxed generally works better than anything else I've got going, but if I only go to 960x720 (PSP is 480x272) while text is good there's still a bit of unevenness in the sprite scaling. Going up to 1440x1080 is better, but the weird thing about that is the highest resolution this monitor was advertised for was 1280x1024 and its primary intended resolution was 1024x768@75Hz so why the fuck is this even working and is it a good idea? The horizontal scan range is supposed to be 64kHz and this is ostensibly 67
