Shame it has a poor gameplay and isn't fun. People need to stop caring only about graphics. Go play Quackshot instead.

It was always supposed to be Donald Duck as Maui, but Disney apparently didn't like this and so he was hastily turned into an original character. "Cold Shadow" was a new subtitle to replace the "Maui Mallard" title screen.

Wouldnt surprise me if they had planned a new Donald Duck cartoon where he'd pretend to be a P.I. called Maui Mallard (M.M. instead of D.D.) who'd moonlight as the crime fighting ninja named Cold Shadow.
But then they were all like "wait, t'is a silly idea lets not go there." but by then the game had already come out.
Personally I found it a confusing game, so the confusing name/story is kinda appropriate.

I've always been curious about this one, mostly due to my love for the character, QuackShot is one of my favorite video games too, so playing another 16-Bit Donald Duck title sounds nice, I feel skeptical though, because while it looks so good, it also looks like jank, I felt the same with Mickey Mania compared to Castle of Illusion, it might be good, but I'm putting it off for now...

I'd say that, from the ones I've played until now, my list would be something like this:

1. QuackShot starring Donald Duck
2. Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers/Quack Attack
3. The Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck
4. World of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck
5. Deep Duck Trouble starring Donald Duck
6. Donald Duck and the Magical Hat

All I'm missing now is Magical Quest 3 and Maui Mallard, I'll probably try out the Magical Quest trilogy first though, they look like quite fantastic titles, I wouldn't expect less from Capcom.

Your placement of Goin' Quackers is gonna vary wildly depending on which version you played
PS1 is its own unique version and it's arguably the best
PC/DC/N64 have only minor differences with each other but are clearly worse than the PS1 version
PS2/NGC is just pure fucking garbage
And that's not even getting into the GBC and GBA games which are both entirely their own things

NTSC had 480 lines at 60hz while PAL had 576 lines at 50hz. The additional 96 lines of PAL often went unused resulting in boarders at the top and bottom of the screen that squashed the image vertically.

Things were nice when Disney only licensed their properties to proven third-parties, like Capcom or Sega. It all went to shit when Virgin came along and made sure to involve Disney's animators in the business. The latter were stubborn and had tons of difficulty adapting to videogames' limitations and gameplay quirks. That "tug of war" tipped the balance in favor of graphics, which were heavily praised by the press. Disney became confident and began to handle many games themselves, shitting on many and many titles... Animation was still top-notch, at least.

Agreed, though I wouldn't blame Virgin entirely, what they came up with when making Aladdin is something we had all dreamed of back then, feel like we're playing the film, because it looked just like it, of course gameplay is still key, but Aladdin specifically still played quite well, it was in latter titles that the standard kept going down, maybe staring with the Lion King, though I enjoyed that.

We really had a few years were Disney titles got handled by both SEGA and Capcom, huh? It feels a bit surreal to be honest, but I'm glad we had it, even if it didn't last as long as it should have last.

From what I understand, the dev team at Disney wanted Maui Mallard to be an original character? But Disney exec didn't want to add a new character to Disney's roster, which changed the character to Donald Duck playing the role of Maui Mallard. Maui Mallard seems like Disney learning how to make a game from Virgin. The game uses the TUME level editor, like Aladdin and every other Virgin game. The levels have a very maze like style to them like a Virgn/ Shiny game. The game looks great for a 16bit title, even on the SNES.

Maui Mallard was only released in UK as a game cartridge, but I think it was also released as a download on the Sega Channel? Only the SNES version was released in North America. i noticed that Donald is advertised as being Maui Mallard for the PAL region boxes. But the NA SNES box drops Donald and just says : Maui Mallard as Cold Shadow. The name was always kinda confusing.

I meant the Mega Drive game was released in pal regions. Maui Mallard was never released on the Genesis as a cartridge. But Nintendo published the SNES and the GameBoy game in tbe NA market.

The marketers dropped Donald Duck from the NA release because they didn't think he was cool enough to appeal to Americans. Europeans still liked him, so they retained Donald's name there. I'm trying to link the interview, even the archive link, but 4cluck thinks it's spam, so just check the development section of game's Wikipedia page.

Got it running on the side here as I browse, what a weird fucking game.
And i'm not a fan of the vertical dithering, I get that it would blend everything nicely together with an RF cable. but its just one of those games that really suffered when most Sega fans started embracing superior video cables years later.

But yeah the entire game just has this weird "LETS MAKE IT COOOOOOOL AND ACTION LIKE FOR THE AMERICANS!" and then.. it only got released in Europe and Brazil.

I'm too lazy to check my own manual, but this game would have benefited from a nice mini comic that explains the change in setting.

I think it had something to do with Nintendo getting the rights to publish the SNES version. The Genesis game was only released on the Sega Channel in NA. Sega Interactive made the Genesis and PC games, using what they learned from the Genesis Aladdin. But Eurocom did the SNES port. There was a sequel in the works for the PS1, apparently...

The SNES port of Maui Mallard was a pretty late SNES release, November 1996. At that point, Shadow of the Empire for the N64 was released around the same time, and the N64 game got more adverting and attention. If they got a sequel out by 1997, that seems pretty late. Possibly why Eurocom made that demo on the PS1.
