If I got this without the cd system card, could I buy a flashcard/cart and use that in place of it? And does the music cd player work without any hu card?

I believe that the original CD-ROM2 is actually a stock CD player. You can use it separately without a console.
Now to play music on the console itself you need a HuCard. The CD player interface is a part of System Card rom. Flashcards for PC Engine let you spoof the System Card easily.

No you don't, you can press the play button on the cd player itself and as long as the cd player is on it will play music

There's suppossed to be romhacked version of the system card but I never could find it. Be careful to not use the normal rom versions

That's because the CD player is a regular stock CD player. You wouldn't be able to interact with it with a gamepad that way.

the romhack\everdrive version of the arcade card is a version specific one & is destructive towards itself (using it as ram instead of a game being loaded once)

you only have a certain number of rewrites anon
its literally cheaper to get an arcade card 3 then to replace an everdrive over and over as you destroy them

tech is getting cool. there's now a new add-on that lets you play supergrafx roms on a regular pc engine

hopefully they make an everdrive hucard at some point that does the same feature

They should have released a gray version of the CD-ROM2 drive. Then it would fit the CoreGrafx and IFU perfectly and be the best looking PC Engine setup (besides the original Duo, which is the most aesthetically pleasing console ever made).
