5 star racing is a decent game but feels undercooked since it lacks a proper career or go mode. Ut the tracks look like someone made North American versions of gran Turismo 1 tracks so it clicks with me.

I thought 5 Star Racing was terrible to be honest, and I forced myself to beat all 5 car classes on Hard. Turning with digital steering seemed non-existant, so analog steering was practically forced on the player. Graphically the game doesn't look anything impressive, and I don't remember the soundtrack standing out at all. The worst was probably the car collisons and random difficulty spikes. A 3lap race on Green Valley in Super Car Chase Hard difficulty is brutal, yet a similar 3lap race on Oberon Raceway in Rally Riders Hard difficulty is a walk in the park.

I have no idea why excitebike 64 isn't more well loved, I get that it came out at the tail end of the 64's lifespan but it's a great dirtbike game that nobody ever talks about. It's not like there are that many motocross game franchises

PS2 racing games are worse. Especially the budget garbage companies like Midas/Phoenix pushed out.
PS1 might have more of them though. The developers of the game in the OP alone put out 5 racing games between 2000 and 2003.

It's arguably a decent game, arguably bad.

You can tell that Kung Fu games at least TRIED but are heavily constrained by budget title restraints. I can see someone trying to ape Gran Turismo 1 track designs, decent graphics. It has a gimped scenario, but the biggest flaw is wonky loose car physics.

I just have a fascination with these late era budget titles and give them a lot of leeway if they at least try. There's shovelware that doesn't even try at all.

Their other game, Mille Miglia also has proper car liscenes too and also a proper campaign.

I owned that game and hated it. Not sure how i'd feel about it now that I am older. I stay away from n64 games I liked as a kid because when I play them now they're not as good as I can remember. SNES games I grew up with on the other hand still hold.

I had lego racer as well for N64. Felt obscure at the time because I didn't know anyone else that played or knew of it. However, it seems everyone online seems to have known it and played it.

It's by Kung-fu games and published by several publishers, so it's not really a Phoenix game slop which is just bottom of the barrel. Kung Fu games made a bunch of very low budget late PS1 racing games using the same engine. They at least tried despite the limitations and need to pump out these games quickly. They clearly seem to appreciate Gran Turismo, and want to replicate it, and it's the kind of shit I'd probably have made in 2000 so I give them a lot of slack.

For a literal advertisement this feels good to play, although that might be because I iterally grew up on it. I preferred hwo it felt to play to Gran Turismo 3. The only trouble is that one of the oval races is literally impossible on hard difficulty.

f1 circus is one of those pc engine hucards that sold consoles, and you'll find in any random pce bundle and that absolutely no westerner wants. same with stuff like fire pro wrestling (westerns only play the snes games) and momotaro dentetsu

The top down and isometric racing games are pretty much unplayable by today's standards. The SFC Mode-7 racing is the first console games that felt like real racers. Racing game into its own with 3D era.

Huh, I've had this one as a kid. Completely forgot all about it. Might try it again these days around.
Picrel is 2008, so a bit off /vr/, but I have never heard about a more obscure racing game, plus it's the only one that comes to my mind at the moment.
Haven't tried it yet, but it is probably bad.

Can somebody help me remember a ps1 racer? All I remember is that one of the levels you were racing on a highway as a tiny car and had to dodge normal sized cars. And there was an ice level. It hasn't been posted in the thread yet.
