As somebody who's completely garbage at beat 'em ups and has less than 20 hours in the genre overall, what are some good ones that'll teach me how I'm meant to play them? Only one I've actually finished is Panzer Bandit.

The arcade version of Final Fight.

OP, this will probably turn you off beat em ups. Final Fight is way more difficult and slower paced than a lot of other games in the genre. Try something like Captain Commando instead.

How the fuck did you pick this as one of your first beat em ups?

I often pick what I'm going to play off the character designs of the playable characters and somebody here posted picrel in a /vr/ babes thread so I had to give it a go. The other character that's basically The Big O was fun to play as too.

Double Dragon 3 on NES if you want to learn how we did on the streets back in the day

Alien vs Predator on the arcade. Its easy, but fucking fun.

Asked this in another thread but didn't get an answer: any good beat em ups with a run button?

>> No.10335630

>>10335178
i don't think i've ever seen one with a dedicated run button. There probably is one i guess, i don't know. Some of them you can double-tap a direction and it will run that way, like Battletoads in Battlemaniacs on SNES

>> No.10335639

>>10335178
Fighting Force uses R1 to run, if I remember correctly.

>> No.10335689

>>10332121
Honestly just pick a snes or genesis beat em up you like the aestetic of and is not streets of rage. All of them are simple, even the SNES final fight is super simplified. mistakes come w difficulty settings too

>> No.10335693

>>10335639
Thanks, I'll check it out.
>>10335630
I don't really like double-tapping to run on my PS3 controller. It probably works fine with an arcade joystick but it's not totally responsive with the soft D-pad. Guess I'll just have to suck it up.

>> No.10335786

>>10335693
Might be a weird way to look at it, but why not play games that don't require running? Like Final Fight 1 and 2, and most games by Data East.

>> No.10335806

>>10335786
That's a good idea, and I've actually been doing that, playing the ones you mentioned and Konami's Vendetta. Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.

>> No.10335928

Somewhat off topic, but do any anons here want to play through some beatemups multiplayer through retroarch or something? I want to play through some rad looking arcade beatemups I found but this genre is so much more fun with another player.
My buddies don't fuck with retro shit, they're all pc gaymers and addicted to steam

Go for arcade versions since you can use unlimited credits. For console games at cartridge consoles, use GameGenie cheats.

I am, I'll keep this thread bumped. I'll post a disc at some point, I'll make one up for random /vr/os to lfg for netplay retro stuff they're into and just ban any freaks/dickheads who show up.

I think there's an emulation thread on /vm/ as well? They might be interested.
