How did people stop their heads from exploding? Holy fuck and this was just the year before 1999. I think there may be some truth that the men who lived during these times did so with permanent erections.

>> No.10327441

>>10326803
We didnt, we just had permanent erections.

Truely, though, didn't fully appreciate how good we had it. Knew shit was awesome but everything was awesome for kids in the 90's.

ut99 would come out the very next year, and 3d accelerators(GPUs) would hit the market bigtime around this time, too, pushing forward even harder.

Wall to wall back to back year to year banger after banger, truely culminating in halflife and halo.

Gods, we were strong back then.

PC gamers ate good in 1998

>> No.10327601

Everyone ate good. Most of the PS1 and N64's best games dropped in 1998 plus the Saturn got Panzer Dragoon Saga and the Dreamcast launched with Sonic Adventure 1, meanwhile the GameBoy got Pokemon in the West and it sold so fucking good Nintendo postponed the launch of the GBA and launched the GBC instead.

>> No.10327605

For me it's 96 and 97, but honestly, any year in the 90's starting from 94 was extremely basé

this was the norm. for every platform. dont listen to anyone who says gaming is better now. they are just upset they cant figure out how to play thief and freespace 2. 1999 is the king of computer games.

Sadly a lot of us played it in software mode for a long time. Most of us were too young or computer inexperienced to justify a 3D card. When I did finally get a Voodoo3 it was pretty transformative, though.

True enligthnement is realizing that software mode looked better all along. It just ran worse (at the time).

Not in Unreal. I'll grant you this for Q1 and 2, but detail textures alone looked space age and amazing compared to software. Lots of surfaces, skyboxes especially, just looked butt and clearly meant to be filtered in Unreal.

98-2004 was fantastic for PC gaming. You can play only the top ten of every year and never run out of things to play. Most games will run without having to jump through hoops or emulate, some even have fan made graphics mods, it was a great era for PC and consoles.

>How did people stop their heads from exploding
What was the average standard of excellence has become the high watermark of our civilization.
The new millenium was a mistake, but soon enough the march of time will bury this painful fact in the comforting blanket of oblivion.

I caught most of this stuff secondhand three or four years later and even then I was INCREDIBLY impressed. Console or PC, 1998 was amazing. Hell, even before that we got cool toys like Beast Wars. What a time to be alive.
>>10327631
Depends on the game but yeah, 3D accelerators were picking up the slack from the CPU quite often.

Yeah, if you can overlook the ugly graphics and ignore the controversy with that one puzzle, there's a really good argument to be made that it's the best game in the series. Personally my favorite will always be The Beast Within though for easily being the best FMV adventure game ever made in a genre with only a handful of good games.
