The Goemon game is really fun 2 player. Really hard but its fun to laugh at each other when you fuck up. Good game.

It's not too bad, feels very systems driven like some other big early 2000s games. Visuals are superb however and on Xbox they look better than anything else on the console.

R-Type III: The Third Lightning
I'm not even into shoot-'em-ups besides bullet hells, but the creative level design made me want to keep going and see what else would come, and the amazing OST made me want stay alive for as long as possible to hear it to the end, without reseting whenever I take a hit:

I hear a lot of Mr. Bones talk lately, but nobody's mentioning Johny bazookatone. It's also a great platformer with a similar feel as Mr. Bones. It's more cohesive in its level design than Mr. Bones and it has better controls imho.

Another game that doesn't get enough attention is spider on PS1. It's a 2.5D platformer where you play as a bionically and biologically engineerd spider that gets all sorts of crazy upgrades. It's definitely fun and Halloween friendly.

>SEGA/Disney (8-Bit)
I often see people recommend the SEGA/Disney titles from the 90's, mostly Castle of Illusion and QuackShot for single-player and World of Illusion for multi-player, and I definitely recommend this series too... but there was a lot more to see too, in this case for the Game Gear/Master System, a bunch of installments actually, all of them good.

>Castle of Illusion
>Land of Illusion
>Legend of Illusion
>Lucky Dime Caper
>Deep Duck Trouble

All of them are fantastic to play even today, and almost as good as their 16-Bit counterparts, for some reason they're often forgotten, despite all of them being among the absolute best platform titles for both the Game Gear and Master System libraries... my favorites are the Donald Duck ones because he's my favorite Disney character by far.

>Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin (Mega Drive)
I know many might feel that there's not much of a reason to come back to this one, especially now that Spider-Man's a video game juggernaut, with Insomniac's current titles, but this one's special, I went back and played most of Spider-Man earlier video games, and few actually hold up and/or do make you feel like the character, and to me this is the one that holds up most before 3D became an industry wide standard. It's a sidescroller and you can platform while beating enemies up along the way... that alone makes it better than most video games based on the character at the time, but it doesn't stop there, Spider-Man controls perfect, you truly feel like the character, being able to go up walls, swing on webs, shoot webs and use this web shield that protects you... it's all excellent, if that wasn't enough, you get more fluid for your web by taking photos of villains for Daily Bugle, just like in the comic books, and you get HP back by resting in Peter Parker's apartment... it's just a complete Spider-Man experience that puts you in Peter Parker's shoes, and rescuing MJ at the end of the day, with that calm OST playing after the tension in the last fight with MJ almost taken from you... it feels heartwarming and special...

Nah that's the ONE collectathon that does it right because, besides timeless presentation and awesome music, there is always a bit of a risk factor and likewise sense of reward for collecting shit because you lose all your progress in a level if you somehow die (and the game really wants you to die with unpredictable enemies and fall damage, etc.)

I don't like Rare or collectathons all too much, but Banjo is based

Yeah that's an understandable take. The story is definitely not very complex and it's one of the weaker elements of the game. I think what keeps it really fresh in my mind was being able to meet all the characters going about their day and trying to figure out how I could recruit them. It was just a very comfy game.

It's kind of like a medieval, spiritual sibling of Skies of Arcadia, does that sound right? I feel like that's accurate.
