I think that the analog sticks in the prototype we saw were indeed too close together... but how is it that this was the only solution they could come up with? I mean, seriously, joycons? If I want to go and use a Saturn controller, or a 6-Button one for whatever purpose, I'll just use the standard one I had for Saturn anyways, and if I want to play with analog sticks, I'll just use a controller where they actually feel good, and not like an afterthough, I had high hopes for this, and it's dissappointing...

Victrix's Pro Controller, with a module system, is pretty much what you're asking for in a way, so I think you should check it out... I love what they did in this one, how they managed to make it 6 buttons, while still keeping the diamond most are familiar with, I wish Sony or Microsoft could release something like this, but with a 2nd analog stick too, don't know how it'd fit without it being a huge controller, but it'd be sick.

I suppose the diamond layout is superior for the majority of what one might want to play, but its expected since most video games are made for said layout, and have been for many years, but I wouldn't call it useless, for arcade ports, mostly fighting, but also other genres, having this sort of layout is very comfortable and feels ideal, of course that includes the whole Saturn library too.

P.S. Now if only Joyzz would release a USB or a bluetooth version of their 6-Button Genesis one, with the gray/clear shell and all, that'd be great, or maybe RetroBit could do one themselves too.

If the sticks were good, I could accept the lack of analog triggers because it would be cool for things other than Saturn. If the triggers were analog, then I could accept the garbage sticks because you only need 1 for Saturn, and having 2 could just be a bonus for other stuff. But in its current state, this is a flaming pile of shit. The wireless adapter for the actual Saturn 3d pad can't come soon enough

>> No.10316907

no one here has held the sticks yet
on joycons people complain more about the drift than the sticks themselves and i don't know what specific module they chose but it'll hopefully last longer than the switch's sticks

>> No.10316947

The switch gets away with low profile sticks because it's a portable console. You can pair a real controller up to it with actual sticks. I would never purchase a dedicated controller with these baby sticks on it. I understand the design choice but I'm just not interested

Analog triggers should be "standard" for third party multi-platform controllers nowadays, unless it's for a specific use-case like fighting games. Same with hall sensor sticks (with R3/L3), and being software programmable. I've got to give credit to 8bitdo for raising the bar as far as Chinese shit goes.

I have two of the transparent blue wireless Saturn pads. Lost one of the dongles in a move and apparently they don't offer replacements. On top of that, the shoulder buttons suck and the battery life isn't great. It would be better if 8bitdo had the license.

>> No.10319126

>>10319119
Analog triggers should only be "standard" if they have trigger stops. The most popular console and the one that has the most open support for third party controllers like the ones mentioned here is the Switch and Switch games only support digital triggers. The only example people brought up are fucking racing games which is too small of a segment to cater to.
I agree with you about needing to edit and save Hall effect stick calibration, it's practically the crux of the "never drift" marketing. It's like having a Dpad without a pivot.

>The only example people brought up are fucking racing games which is too small of a segment to cater to
Didn't some sports games make use of analog triggers? I wouldn't know since I never play sports games. I wouldn't say that racing games are a small niche market. It's a rather large segment of games that appeal to many types of gamers from casual to hardcore, and many of those games can benefit from analog triggers. Even if analog inputs don't lower your track times, it can add to your enjoyment.

There are even many retro racing games that can make use of analog triggers via emulation. I'm sure there are also several titles scattered about that are almost unplayable without analog triggers. Mario Sunshine comes to mind. Zusar Vasar on Dreamcast is another one.

I also wonder if some PS2 games could have some pressure sensitive face buttons remapped to triggers when emulating. PS2 controllers were total shit in terms of quality, with that paper thin plastic membrane they used. They degrade over time even if you keep them safely stored so relying on a supply of working PS2 controllers won't be viable long-term.

The sticks come very close to the ridge on the controller housing. This means rubber caps probably won't fit without rubbing against the controller housing. To say that they did.
If they can market it as an "general use" option, it has more broad appeal than a strictly digital controller. Regardless of how viable it may or may not be. As long as the 2D portion of the controller isn't compromised, it's exclusively a benefit even if it goes unused 95% of the time.

I mean, I get what they were going for, just take what many consider to be the ideal 2D controller, and add analog sticks so it's viable for 3D, to make it the only controller anyone might need... I think they've pulled it off quite well, just wish the housing for the sticks was bigger so they don't get so close to touching it, or if there wasn't any housing at all, but the joycons don't look bad, as long as they don't drift, this is superb.
