Is this the most underrated console of all time?

>> No.1031190

Probably. I've never had a PC Engine but from the stuff I've read it was an amazing one, ahead of its time, particulary fantastic for shoot'em up.

why is that then?

I'd say it's simultaneously one of the most underrated and overrated consoles of all time. At the very least it was overrated in its own time, as a 8-bit console with 16-bit graphics selling itself as a full 16-bit experience.

>> No.1031924

The Turbografx-16 could have taken the Genesis' space as another market leader, but the American devisions of NEC were incompetent in marketing it, and releasing the right games for it. One of the biggest problems the system had was it's release date; while in Japan it was released before the Mega Drive, in the US it was released after the Genesis. They both went for a similair audience, so in Japan the PC Engine beat the Mega Drive as a market leader while in the US it got curbstomped.

Despite all that, it has an unique library of great games, especially if you are willing to explore the immense amount of JP-only games for it.

Back then the whole bit-thing may have mattered, but these days I don't see much of a difference. While the TG-16 had a 8-bit CPU and very low RAM (8kB compared to Genesis' 64kB and SNES' 128kB, although the TG-16 CD added 64kB) it did have a 16-bit custom video encoder chip and a 16-bit video display encoder. Once you start comparing some ports between the TG-16/Genesis, the TG-16 surprisingly comes out on top fairly often, despite a few color differences and lack of parallax scrolling.

The 16-bit thing actually backfired on them, once everyone found out about it.

Just a tip:
You can burn games for your TG-CD, it doesn't have copy protection. Also, all imports work, giving you access to the whole Japan-only CD library without any region-locking.

If you get a Super System Card, you can also play Super CD-ROM2 games, which is where some of the best games of the system are at.

oh and if anyone is wonder these are the games i have so far:

Alien Crush
Bonk's Adventure
Bonk's Revenge (loose hucard)
Bravoman
Double Dungeons (loose hucard)
Dungeon Explorer
Keith Courage in the alpha zones
Pac-Land
Sidearms
Splatterhouse
TV sports football
Veigues Tactical Gladiator (missing manual)
World Class baseball x2 (not sure why)
World Court Tennis (loose hucard)

Turbo CD games

Cosmic Fantasy 2
Monster Lair
Ys Book 1 & 2

coming in the mail

Buster bros (loose but was dirt cheap with generic jewel case)
Legendary Axe

the turbo cd is quite finnicky with burned discs and usually requires really high quality discs or lower capacity old stock cds.

also the super system card is like $150...

Ah, that's right, forgot about how expensive all the American stuff is...

I guess you could invest in one of those region converters, but they are pretty damn expensive too. At least a converted Japanese System Card works without any problems, and it allows access to the Japanese HuCard library too.

As for the finicky laser, I've never had much of a problem with mine, and I have had it for many years now. A CD laser doesn't just break from reading a burned disc, but if it's low quality it might wear it out. I recommend using good media like Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs and burning them at the lowest possible speed.

problem # 2 converters usually start at $200

Such is life for American TG-16 owners. At least there are quite a few great normal TG-16 games too.

btw i had a broken turbotap that had to do with a sheered cabled. works great now and also doubles as a controller extension.

and before anyone asks this was by far my worst condition controller, i would rather play two player games with a working turbotap than single player only with three controllers to choose from. (not like i did anything permanent anyway, just unpluged the cable from the board and swapped them.

there is a turbo mod chip for sale, very cheap. you will have to install it yourself or get someone to do it for you however. I installed mine and it works great! you just flip a switch to choose the region.

I really like the turbo, but the chip games are too quirky and obscure to compete with the megadrive.
