Don't know what you're talking about, I like plenty of JRPGs on the thing with more that I haven't played. There are some that are very average, but that can be found on other consoles as well.

yeah that sounds about right. we went from 15-20 hour epics like dragon quest 5 to indulgent snobbery like xenogears. japan never understood the proper way to use the extra storage space other than pointless content, text and load times. oh well. panzer dragoon saga is pretty clever. plenty of good ps1 rpgs sure, but it really was the beginning of the end.

The SNES perfected JRPGs and then the PS1 took it too far.
-drab, overblown stories that overstay their welcome by like 10 hours
-too many cutscenes
-minute-long attack animations
-lots of unappealing 3D models

Of RPG Maker shit, yes. Reading comprehension. PlayStation RPG's look, sound, plays, and has far more depth than anything to be found on the SNES.

JRPGs are good as a genre but it's like playing the same game by the same team just slightly remade each time. Sure as technology progressed things got better and you have the odd standout which distinguishes itself with a gimmick or two, but really they're basically all the same fucking game. Characters are bland and are more created to fulfill some need for an archetype in the mish-mash of Jung and Shinto that guides all JRPG writers. Their personality exists solely in how their hair style and outfits are depicted.

Tactical RPGs saved Japanese gaming really. But even that innovation was old, simply a transplant of ancient western CRPGs to the Japanese console. Japanese don't really innovate, they are more content to honor tradition and perhaps carve a table in a very slightly different way, so that an expert alone could see their unique style. Same is true in vidya.

>japan never understood the proper way to use the extra storage space other than pointless content, text and load times.

And at that time at least, they also didn't understand how to use 3D graphics hardware other than tedious, time-devouring, gaudy, meaningless spectacle. The SNES was the ultimate platform for JRPG makers then. Give it more storage, and they fill it with aimless story convolutions and other clutter. Give it more speed, and they use it to run 3D graphics engines and incompetently indulge their fantasies of directing movies instead of making games (because they don't even like games all that much). It's as powerful a tool as they can handle without making at least one ruinous mistake.

What you'd need is a single person with actual decent taste in charge of an otherwise Japanese team of highly experienced developers. Probably a non-Japanese person then, somebody to pick out an actual good writer who won't make the story a giant tangle of shallow details, and to command the others to make combat (or whatever you mainly do in the game) go by as time-efficiently as possible and with as much interactivity as possible, and to somehow innovate beyond the standard system of letting players grind XP to surpass absolutely any challenge with zero skill having been required. Although that SaGa guy or someone else like him could probably suffice instead. Not all JRPG developers are absolutely obsessed with making shallow, stylish, non-interactive spectacles. Just... most of them.

Yeah this, limitations of cartridges required devs to write concise stories. PS1 they took it way too far and filled their games with bloat and meaningless bullshit. Its not entirely the PS1's fault since its on the devs to understand that filling the story with pointless dialog is bad writing, but its nearly 30 years later now and they still havent learned.

Check out Game Boy maybe. Not every console excels in one particular area, some are more jack of all trades (and in some cases master of none). There are still plenty of solid action-adventure games on PS1 like Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid, and Mega Man Legends.

Based. Both Sega and NEC had far higher quality JRPG output than what was offer on the SNES, which was almost entirely SquareSoft's shovelware scraps. Everyone calls the SNES a "JRPG powerhouse" solely because it had quantity, speaking nothing for the quality of those games, which were largely lackluster.
