Working Designs thread?

>> No.1030551

They're not really a studio, they just did localizations and a lot of weeabos have problems with the liberties they took with games but back in the day that logo was a good indicator that you were going to get a pretty sick game that no other company would have given your white ass enough credit for wanting to play to release it in your region.

Classic line...

I really did enjoy the translations and Japanese omake packaging. But I also greatly disliked their tinkering with the mechanics of games. They really made Silhouette Mirage nearly impossible unless you take (punch) the money out of every single enemy. Sega CD's Lunar 2 "point" system was also annoying... And Popful Mail... Ugh. Why, Vic?! Why?

certainly try Rayearth. to me, it feels like quite a simple RPG, but the characters are fun, and I enjoy the dialogue and gameplay. You don't level up like a normal rpg however. you kind of just progress Zelda-Style and as you get upgrades, you get stronger like that. also, you'll find Health and Magic crystals that increase a character's max of whichever, so, yeah.

Umi's my favorite character.

Vic Ireland threw a massive manbaby fit at Konami for not giving him Goemon, combined with his absolute hatred of the DS/GBA, meaning he refused to follow his bread and butter franchise (Lunar) to keep his company funded. He bankrupted the whole company by not getting it any goddamned work. I'm forever pissed at him for putting his selfish whims above the needs of his goddamned people.

>>1030691

I actually loved how goddamned difficult Silhouette was. Honestly a lot of the games WD brought over were middling at best before they tooled around with them, balance or translation-wise. Honestly, Lunar's just a very generic fantasy RPG without their work.

>> No.1030923

>>1030897
>Vic Ireland threw a massive manbaby fit at Konami for not giving him Goemon,
This is not what happened at all.
What happened was they had procured the rights to Goemon, and were working on the PS2 Goemon, and were denied releasing the game by Sony because it was so late in the PS2s life, and Sony didn't want the game out in the US. Because of the money threy had sunk into the translation project, and unable to release the game they were out a fuckton of money with no way to recover it.

Not true... WD were working on Goemon already. It had nothing to do with Konami. I think it had more to do with Sony, but I was not aware that it was the Goemon project that bankrupt the company...

>> No.1031019

What I really missed was the bloopers in the end. I always laughed at those and wish more games had those. Like an unlockable after beating the game. To me Working Designs really stands at one of the best publishers of all time. Yes their humor was almost cringe worthy but when they worked on a game they did their best to make it enjoyable. And those extra stuff with the games were always a treat to have.
>>1030897
Lunar was fairly generic but no one knew that at the time. We didn't really have much in the ways of RPGs. And I still say the voice acting was fairly good especially in 1992. And for a RPG that was actually legible was amazing since Final Fantasy 4 was just a year later and no one could understand what was going on in that game.

>They really made Silhouette Mirage nearly impossible unless you take (punch) the money out of every single enemy.

Man, I can't help but feel that people are waaaaaay over exaggerating the difficulty of Silhouette Mirage. I mean, this is a medium length action game that lets you save frequently, and always right where something big is going to happen. None of the boss patterns take long to learn either...

>> No.1031048

>>1031019
Wait a minute!! Lunar 1 and 2 are in no way as generic as any other SNES Final Fantasy game, which they did come out at around the same time as. Stop this poopoo right this instant, please.

>>1031034
Yes, I understand this and I beat the game multiple times, but now, after playing the Japanese Saturn version, I think the game's fun factor was significantly reduced by having to grind for money if you want better weapons (which again you don't need to beat the game, but god damn it...)

>> No.1031060

>>1031048

Okay, you do have a good point now. It's pretty obvious that this 'work for your fun' sort of gameplay wouldn't appeal to a lot of people. However, crazy as it may sound, rewarding the player for minimalism can be a pretty interesting flavor if you're up to it. The only true problem with SM would be that the difficulty settings were locked away preventing use of more standardized play.

Lunar TSSSC was "generic" or old school in a time when we had the RPG cliches of emo, slikey haired protagonist that were emotionless douchebags wearing fur jackets. Frankly Lunar TSSSC's "genericness" was a breath of fresh air from having to select Draw or play Track and Field whenever we summoned a GF.

Sony is probably part of the reason Working Designs died. They forced Arc the Lad into translation hell and ended up only letting them release it as a complete collection, Growlanser Generations was original going to be budget seperate releases but Sony said they couldn't release a 2D PS1 game on PS2 without putting them together, and then they denied Goemon despite the fact that most of the work was done already.

One of their biggest money pits ever though was Magic Knight Rayearth. Part of the source code was lost before WD got their hands on it and as such some of the game had to be rebuilt from scratch causing tons of delays.

While I do like Working Designs for the most part (looking at Silhouette Mirage), what I really miss is the SPAZ label they had which brought over a few excellent shumps.

Plus, they localized Elemental Gearbolt, which is one of the best light gun games ever made in my opinion. How can I hate that?

>> No.1031529

>>1031034
I have to agree - the game is nowhere near as unplayable as its detractors make out, and several early spots in the game give you more money than you'll ever really need, especially if you don't buy the fully-powered up shot and boomerang weapons in the first level, which makes any other items redundant.

The game is still plenty fun and I feel that you miss out on some charming, humorous atmosphere and dialog if you skip out on the English release.

Avoid season 2, though. The first season included a bunch of JRPG tropes and was like an anime trying to be a video game. But, S2 had none of that. It didn't even have a setting. It was just character drama in empty hallways.

The goofy dialog of Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean really elevates what is otherwise a standard RPG (with beautiful graphics).

It's been a while since I've played it, but I do remember a dragon warrior dying at your party-member Gryzz's feet, and he says "It appears that he is dead" to which your gal-pal says "Well that's some excellent sleuthing there, Gryzz. Good job."
