So I really want to play Mother but was wondering if you guys could help me with which ROM I should go with.

This one seems like the way to go but I thought I'd just double check and see if I should just go with the original ROM.

Just play Earthbound.

Yes, go with that one. You'll miss out on the 'pure' experience (read: tons of grinding, badly formed dialogue, poorly spelled character names, three words of text on the screen at a time, etc.,) but it's a much closer translation to the actual Japanese game script than any of the other translations, and the difficulty changes make the game feel more like an RPG rather than an exercise in grinding patience.

That being said, the only thing that sucks about it is that the GBA version in general doesn't have the same extremely limited graphics that the NES version has. Kind of like playing SMB3 on the SNES All-Stars cartridge instead of on an NES, or (to a much lesser extent) like the PS1 remake of Final Fantasy 1.

Oh, and make sure that you don't play the GBA version of Mother 2. The SNES Earthbound ROM really has an amazing English script that only deviates from direct translations in places where the literal Japanese doesn't make sense (word puns, etc.,) and even then, it makes up for them with English equivalents.

It also has better sound.
