Blew up my 9-year old mind.
What platforming games reward you for going the opposite way?

>> No.10304810

DKC games hide collectable items this way sometimes. The other example that immediately comes to mind is Monkey Ball - I know at least one of the first two games occasionally hides a shortcut behind a course's starting position. (I know Monkey Ball isn't normally considered a "platformer" but come on it's nothing but platforms.)

DKC 3 has a good example of this

Metroid teaches you that going left is an option by putting the morph ball there, which is required to progress, since if you immediately go right you'll hit a wall.

Mega Man X2 hides a heart tank inside the left wall in Wire Sponge's stage.

mega man 4 has a 1up to the left of cossack 1's start hidden in the snow.

It's not a platformer, but Crazy Taxi has four hidden "bonus customers" who give way more money than normal. If you reverse at the start of the game instead of driving forward, you'll find one of them.

I think it was Bridge Zone Act 3... were there any more in this title or other Sonic ones? I can't remember it well...

I always felt like a genious when I found stuff like this out... but I also feel like an idiot every time I attempt it and just ram into a wall...

You can skip the first area in James Pond 2 by doing this.

Well, 3D Blast can kinda count since levels are freeroam-ish.

You know, it took me about 25 years to find some secrets in NES DuckTales.
I've played the game like 100 times before, imagine my surprise.

Making wild guesses and checking out if its real is great part of old gaming fun. And you double your fun if it actually real, so think about it as of intellectual gambling.

Well... you have a good point there, exploring is always a fun time, finding things out, discovering stuff, and that involves ramming into things too, sometimes you'll get nothing, and maybe you do feel a little dumb like I do sometimes, but other times you might find something special, you're right, anon.

I know this is such a simple thing... and yet I love it and find it so charming when a game does it. I wish it was a little more common.

This game is pure dog shit compared to the SNES game (an actual platformer, not a shitty crouch simulator). It even looks like dog shit and nothing like the movie

It was literally animated by Disney's animators to look just like the movie...

In WarioLand 2 if you simply don't get out of bed at the start of the game you can do an entire set of otherwise inaccessible levels that eventually ends in the completion of the game.
