This is an underrated game, it's a very solid kart racer with good physics and fundamentals. When you learn it's by Rare, that's not surprising. Its only fault is that it does nothing special compared to the other good kart racers of the day. The tracks are well-designed and it's cool that they tour the USA through different cities, but none are super memorable. The character list is kind of short. The weapons are bland. I don't remember any music either. It's just a good game and nothing more.

As far as I can tell Mario Kart 64 is by far the best kart game. It feels fast (150 cc), controls well (has a
decent mini boost mechanic), and more importantly the items are very fun to use. Well timed shells and lightnings, a precise star hit, and well placed bananas can easily send your opponents flying out of the track, that feels incredibly satisfying. Most other kart racers will simply make the adversaries stop dead on their tracks upon being hit by something and thats no fun at all.
I only wish there were more courses in the game.

They’re nothing alike. MSU has no hub world, no discovery of collectables in tracks, and no different vehicles. It focuses more on just tight, fast-moving racing mechanics and some seriously challenging tracks. It’s one of the more “racing” focused kart racers.

Do you have some general tips for Double Dash? I feel like there's some kind of overcommitment in my inputs, unlike in Mario Kart 64, which I felt more responsive.

Diddy Kong Racing DS has got to be one of the dumbest remakes I've ever played. Not even bad, just dumb. Like it still plays good and a lot of the additions are pretty neat, but good god you spend more time playing touch screen minigames than you do racing in this racing game.
