It was actually born out of nationalism as a lot of kings as after the french revolution a lot of people starting asking, "hey yeah, why CAN'T we rule ourselves?" Tribalism is as old as the dirt we walk on but nationalism is a concept that's less than 300 years old. Before the nationalist movements of the late 18th century, the notion of a nation-state as a collective property of a cultural or national construct didn't exist. The land was owned by the king, all of it, and you lived on THEIR land by their grace. The people who worked the land and administrated the sections of it had no true rights to these lands and merely were tolerated by the king who was ostensibly tolerated by God. The modern nation-state is different because it had to find a reason to justify why that land was their sovereign territory as it was no longer simply a ruling family's private propety.

And as a result of this, people starting mocking nobility a whole lot more, and to be fair the nobility made it really easy for them to be mocked because they tended to look and act very differently from the rest of the country, and in a lot of cases it came off as very effeminate.
