the first thing you think when you think about mechs, besides the mechs themselves, is that a jap made them, but for some reason this big black console from the americas got a LOT of mech games, just of the top of me head i can name

Why not? Steel Battalion was janky garbage that sold only because of the bitching controller. I played it a few times then flipped it for what I bought it for. Robotech wasn't very good either, I only played Battlecry. Movement in either game wasn't too hot, hated Journey to Jaburo on PS2 and Dynasty Warriors Gundam as well. The movement in AC2 or 3, which one was on PS2? The game itself was okay but a little generic, it at least had splitscreen MP. Are any of the other titles on your list even worth looking at?

There was just a lot in general back then frankly. Mechwarrior was owned by MS, the From stuff is weird experimental shit they put on there instead of the 7 Armored Core and 3 ACE games they did for PS2, Robotech shit is western multiplats. PS2 had like 17 Gundam action games alone.
