I'm specifically interested in the "new" 2ds xl. Are you saying the "new" 3ds xl triumphs even if there would be zero plans in using the 3d feature? Just for clarification, I would be using it to play GB/GBC/GBA pkmn roms with the bonus of feasibly playing ds/3ds roms natively. Thanks for any elaboration.

you're better off just getting a 505 and accepting the unused screen on the sides. bezels can also help you cope. alternatively just get a RP2S for like 60% of the price, it's better in literally every way but screen size. well, chip power technically too, but it doesn't really matter for anything but PS2 which you shouldn't be trying to play on anything weaker than an Odin anyways.

That's a good point...but I guess I'm more weary about AYN because I tried pre-ordering the Loki 256 back in December, and it took me until late July to get a confirmation notice to pay the remaining balance. By that point I already got a Switch Deck and let someone else grab it in my place.
That's not to knock AYN's products specifically since I still haven't used one. But at this point if I order now, I doubt that it will arrive by December.

I picked the white model just to go full weeb:

So far, I'm really liking it. I ran MHW at 1080p with shadow effects on the highest settings and it ran smoothly.

I just beat Rayman: Hoodlums' Revenge on my GBA SP. This is my first time beating it on genuine hardware, though I also beat it like 12+ years ago when I was a kid using Visual Boy Advance on my PC (anyone remembers that emulator?). I had fond memories of it, and it honestly holds up pretty well. For a handheld spin-off, it has some cool ideas. Globox is playable and there are levels where the player has to switch between him and Rayman to solve puzzles. It obviously doesn't have the same level of polish as the Rayman games on big consoles. It's also really easy. But it was enjoyable nonetheless. I gotta say though, I'm not a fan using the D-pad in isometric platformers like this. You gotta pivot a lot and your thumb will just get tired at some point. It's weird to say this, but arrow keys on PC are actually better for this game.

I used it until a couple of years back even, but then stopped when it glitched out one of my Game Boy Color save files, went to mGBA and never looked back... still fond of VBA though.

>For a handheld spin-off, it has some cool ideas.
It's surprising how many "inferior" spin-offs the GBA got that were actually quite fantastic in their own way, I often see it as a portable PS1 at times, due to the vast library and IPs in it.

>It obviously doesn't have the same level of polish as the Rayman games on big consoles.
If it was tested, then it's already got more polish than the original Rayman, the later levels, and the requirements to get to the final boss, were just ridiculous considering the target audience.

>I gotta say though, I'm not a fan using the D-pad in isometric platformers like this.
Same, it's one of the reasons I don't mind going for emulation in titles like this, being able to use a SEGA styled D-Pad with 8 directions, or just an analog stick instead through an emulator setting, goes a long way to increase my comfort.

Personally I have really been enjoying my RGB30, even though the screen is square aspect ratio it's great for a lot of things, including NES (crop the overscan garbage pixels), SNES (8:7), PC-Engine (16:15), GBA (3x integer scale looks nice) and Arcade (verticals).
If you need higher than PS1 then don't bother with that one though.

I’ve had the RP2S for a week, and honestly, I still can’t bring myself to drop my MM+.

Android just does NOT compare to Linux. It just doesn’t. Sooo much tinkering has to be done to remove all the “phoney” elements from it, like the lock screen, the onscreen controls, the stupid white bar at the bottom of the screen, and then you have to install a frontend to make all look clean, even after all that, the OS just feels “off”; it never feels like a real console interface the same way OnionOS or SteamOS do. Fir example, Daijisho doesn’t have a playtime tracker for each game, because it doesn’t have the permissions to get that kind of data from all the different emulator apps. Meanwhile, OnionOS tracks playtime just fine, because it’s its own thing, and not some Frankenstein’d phone menu with lipstick put on.

And while horislop is indeed more ergonomic, vertislop is more portable, and the MM+ specifically is small enough to play slower-paced games with one hand. Playing stuff like Pokemon or Fire Emblem while I’m driving home from work is the comfiest feeling, and you can’t replicate that with horislop. So yeah, I don’t see myself dropping the MM+ for the RP2S any time soon

That was actually with integer overscan crop, so it was integer scaled x5 and then had the remainder cut. Essentially 4 game pixels were cut off from the top side, 4 more from the bottom side, 8 from the left, etc. I don't actually play like that (prefer non-interger scaled but aspect ratio kept, so just left with 2 tiny black bars at top and bottom), just wanted the full screen used for the pic. Bullshit, there's no difference between playing them with or without Adrenaline except if you like having the bubble. Both the official PSN releases and Adrenaline use the same built-in PSP emulator, Adrenaline just expands it into the full PSP OS while the PSN releases just cut out everything except the essential to launch straight into the game. If anything, Adrenaline is better since it also adds its own menu on top of the official settings with useful things like save states and graphic/res settings. Oh yeah, and there's also the CFW menu that lets you actually adjust the CPU frequency.

If you still somehow are getting worse performance in Adrenaline, either you're using a compressed/bad ISO or you fucked up somewhere else.

>no cartridge slot so there's no risk of something getting messed up whenever I take it with me in my pocket, unlike the DS which keeps getting crap stuck in the cartridge slots
>can actually take it on the go easily, unlike something like a Switch
>don't care if I lose it or damage it since it's just chinesium I can buy again, unlike an antique like a DS which will probably blow up in price soon

If you're still about anon, could you give me a quick summary on what you like and dislike about your Analogue? Thinking of trying to get one when the transparent go on sale. Very sure it's 'for me', I don't care about Save States and the idea of having something with a screen that nice for GB/C/A, SNES, NES and Genesis sounds nice. I'd just rather hear negatives and positives from someone who's unbiased.

>dont care about save states
good, thats the weakest part of openfpga
not all cores support them,
they likely will soon though as updates happen often

the screen feels a bit "hot" to me after about an hour of playing
but i run it on max bright and refuse to lower it
battery life is pretty good
idle time is godtier
i charge it 1-2 times per week at most

another qualm is the neat filters\effects only work on actual carts not within openfpga

build quality is good
screen lens pokes up a bit (intentionally)
so if youre autistic about it being perfectly flat well.... bad news

the white one shows wear
although i think the black looks worse when greasy
maybe the transparent ones stay fresh lookin

tldr;
if it got stolen or broken i would repurchase that same payperiod
if you have carts and care about moving seamlessly to ngc-player or supergameboy then its A+

i dont have the dock

fpga = basically 100% perfect
screen is high res and responsive
passes the super mario test etc
acceptable for hardcore shmups

When my broken Anbernic device arrived 2y ago I wondered why people shill these things, considering the built quality and level of performance.

Love the Deck, I know its not for everyone as the size is indeed not really handheld anymore but fuck does it perform well, installed all emulators in 20min via Emudeck and it just werks, PS2 games that work on my desk work just as well on the deck.
NES, SNES and PS1 games look very nice on it, the smaller devices screen was usually too small for those imo.

The clearcase is actually good when you are wanting to keep it safe at home. The little pegs that fit into the screw holes keep it nice and stable. The dock is questionable unless you want to do TV, in which case it works fine, however if you don't see-saw the Pocket into it the plastic around the USB-C port will get scratched, which is a serious design flaw.

Wait, what's wrong with the nano?
That thing looks like the perfect mindless rpg machine. Put in the file that swaps the L button and the A button then you have a one handed grind device. There's probably a way to fast forward on it too. Keep in mind this device, to me, is designed to have games to absentmindedly play when doing something else, not to be used as a dedicated all-attention-focused device. It's been something I've been eyeing for a while now, care to talk me out of it?

Literally the best compliment I heard anyone say about the thing after playing it was, "I like how it forces me to play Pokemon Crystal". It's 100% ass for anything besides GameBoy, GameBoy Color, and GameGear. Even NES games look like fucking shit on it due to its size. People are better off getting a FunkeyS or some shit if they really need a keychain emulation handheld.

It tries to play up to PS1 games on a screen that can't even handle SNES games and gets extremely warm after minutes of use. Even when resting your thumb between the face buttons and rolling it as if using a d-pad, the face buttons are too fucking small and require deliberate effort to click them. You can't even play games like Kirby's Adventure properly on it because of how cramped, small, and low-travel click is. Anyone who has anything positive to say about the piece of shit says it's exclusively good for GBC RPGs and not anything that requires any reaction. And at that point, if you're only playing GBC RPGs, you might as well do it on your fucking phone.

Just looking at the two designs side-by-side alone just shows why Anbernic failed so hard with the RG Nano; They failed to simplify things and instead just tried to brute-force make more complicated pieces smaller, especially with its buttons. Because of this, the d-pad has a giant dust gap which it needs to be able to move at all, while the individual face buttons probably need their own, tightly molded spaces instead of just having one piece for all four buttons like the FunKeyS does. It's also why they went with making them metal, because their ass-backwards idea to just take things and shrink them down without any simplification probably kept producing plastic shells that would snap or melt after five minutes of use.

Vita's are nice, but the Switch genuinely sucks. Beyond the cost of getting a model with a decent panel, the severely outdated hardware and increased cost of Switch ports compared to PC, the terrible included controllers and the additional costs of getting a good controller/adapter or a good cradle style controller/grip, plus the costs of paid online multiplayer, you'll pretty much end up paying more in the long run compared to a Deck with far less value.
Plus the Switch basically locks retro games behind an online multiplayer paywall, none of your prior eShop VC purchases transfer over like they would on the PSP/Vita.

I'm not sure the Nano gets the 60hz screen update though, Anbernic shitted up the software somehow.
Anyway, great games to play are the GB Pokemon, Pinball games, Mario Golf, Pokemon TCG (first and second), Tetris and similar.
Platformers and other action games are not recommended, and some games like Metal Gear Ghost Babel are just flat out broken because all the emulators use fast unsafe settings.

It's good for the price point. ItJustWorks (get yourself a fresh clean SanDisk microsd card and install OnionOS).

Mini Plus only has two downsides imo:
-No shader support (if you care about those)
-If you like to lie on your back and hold your device directly above your head, the center of gravity is above the dpad area, which means it will tilt forward and bonk you in the face unless you get creative with how you hold it (index fingers steepled to support the top, middle fingers on rear L/R buttons). If you don't play games lying down in bed, this won't be an issue.

but it's also less than a hundred bucks. If it wasn't this device, I'd get an RG405M, which has great build quality and shader support, but that one is ~$160.

That asian vtuber I linked a while ago finally talked about those weird 3DS-looking devices shown off at TGS.

Allegedly the red and black model does actually take 3DS carts and plays them at higher resolutions. She didn't say but it has to be via emulation, maybe software if I had to guess. The blue and black model is just a handheld PC though. If I understand her right though, neither of them seem meant for mass production, or at least the handheld PC specifically. It'll only get made if there's demand for it, and their product showcase at TGS was just that, a product showcase just to show that they can make it.

Yeah it's solid, I bought the blue color and there are no mould defects, no fingerprint magnetism etc. It's well engineered for the cheapness of the materials used.
I do however not like it's suspend/resume shenanigans, sometimes I need to try twice for the screen to actually show something. Should I buy a new SD card or change some settings?

Not that anon but I did literally no planning. I was playing a game and remembered they dropped in 30 so I opened the site a few minutes ahead of time and pushed refresh until it was live. I got mine with no problems.

Likewise, my friend bought 3 (one for him, one for his gf, one for his sister - he's not scalping) and had no issue either, and two of them were purple.

If you read the complaints many of them are making up bullshit excuses like "the site crashes!!1!" (It didn't).

I'm not defending analogue - they make a lot of shitty business decisions - but it was very fair.

>Nobody's fucking buying an Analogue Pocket around here just because it has a new colour
I bought one. I wanted black but it's been difficult to get. My friend waited over a year for his, I didn't want to wait a stupid amount of time for a pre-order and I didn't want to pay double price.

The color models said they would ship out within 2 weeks. They do look better, but that's just an extra benefit. I've wanted the device itself for a while, and after I got my mess with my friends I wanted it even more (the display is beautiful).

I assume the case for other anons is the same. Nobody is going to talk about it when they're not available (or are only available for $700), but there was just a bunch available and in a nice color scheme so of course people are going to talk about it suddenly.

You should take your meds. Analogue probably has like 5 employees, there's no way they could suddenly swarm threads.

Now that I bought both of my friends retro emulator handhelds for 8-bit and 16-bit games, the next logical step up would be something like the Q90 or V90 for PS1 and the CD add-ons, but they are slightly more expensive. It's still super exciting to see them getting into retro games
