>December 19, 2003: Last game in the series, V.G. Neo, released (with tie-in OVA releasing the next year); both disliked by series veterans for being pieces of soulless hentai
>nine to ten years pass, with nothing but Advanced Variable Geo 1 and 2 on PSN as PS1 Classics in Japan in the meantime
>August 31, 2022: Last Anna Miller's branch (whose restaurant inspired Yuka's outfit and restaurant) in Japan closed
>March 5, 2023: Takahiro Kimura, character designer, passes away
>March 31, 2023: Giga, TGL's eroge division that birthed Variable Geo on PC-98, closes up shop (TGL is still otherwise around)
How does it feel to be a Variable Geo fan?

Honestly? I just need the console games, or more precisely, Advanced V.G. 2., I don't really care for rest of the series. Also, Yuka is qt, where did you find this artwork?

>>10274304
>Hell V.G. Custom and Max has defeat H-scenes, then there's the VNs based on the pre-Neo games.
You can do this shit on PC, unlike on the consoles where the licensing rules are strict on graphic sexual content. And V.G. Custom is trash haphazardly put together with assets from various games in the series, while V.G. Max could've been easily released on consoles with the H-stuff removed. I wonder if these two games have the option to switch humiliation scenes off, because PC-98 ones do have it. I would love to check out these VNs but... *sigh* being an EOP sucks ass, bros.

>>10274306
>Same thing happened with Vallis.
Except V.G. series started out as hentai games, then console releases ditched H-stuff, only to go back to being eroge again. Valis wasn't an eroge throughout the whole series until the very end. One thing these two franchises have in common - they were horribly mismanaged. If TGL would care, we would have had Advanced V.G. 3 on modern hardware by now. But I don't see a sequel coming up now that Kimura-san is gone.

They waffled back and forth. Sony was always more restrictive so the PS1 version was pretty much just a shitty Street Fighter imitator. There was a blink and you'll miss it moment where it looked like they were trying to take the franchise mainstream but that fizzled out immediately. Though at the time there wasn't really a wide market for that kind of a game. Adults weren't readily marketed to as easily back then as they are today. If anything VG should probably make a return as a fully 3D game and try to muscle in on DOA's marketshare now that that series is showing some weakness after all the microtransaction bullshit alienated people.

>Sony was always more restrictive so the PS1 version was pretty much just a shitty Street Fighter imitator.
So what would be the difference? The PCE version at least has copious pantyshots for coomers to enjoy, but the gameplay is just as mediocre, and the spritework is even worse. H-scenes or not, the core gameplay is the same, although the "Advanced" games aren't just as janky as the PC-98 ones.

>If anything VG should probably make a return as a fully 3D game and try to muscle in on DOA's marketshare now that that series is showing some weakness after all the microtransaction bullshit alienated people.
I concur, but if the character roster is completely new and has a shit design like in V.G. Neo, then they'd better not make this return. And if they do, they should include clothing damage as an option.

>How does it feel to be a Variable Geo fan?

I am glad to have experienced it, but ultimately am disappointed to the point that I would like to make my own all female fighting series in the future while taking care not to repeat its mistakes.

This is a series that had all of the tools necessary to be good but ultimately kept being ruined by poor Japanese business decisions.

They really didn't know about what they had here. People absolutely loved Variable Geo because of its characters. But Giga could never evolve its mindset past the intention of the first game: to make a game full of disposable cheap thrills for its predominately male nukige consuming fan base(because Giga only cared about making a fast buck at the time.)

But the console releases showed us that the series could offer so much more. With a greater emphasis on the fighting and the characters it no longer needed to rely on porn to attract fans.

People became invested in the characters themselves and shallow as some were they still provided a level of cool unique to the 1990s aesthetic.

And in my opinion the worst of it, and this is rarely gets mentioned, is that its rise occurred during the golden age of fighting games yet sadly was not able to capitalize on it(precisely because it kept on returning to the poisoned well of wanting to be an eroge after already breaking into the mainstream.)

Every character references contemporary fighters from that time period.
Yuka plays like Ryu, Satomi's pyrokinesis is a reference to Kyo, Manami uses Blanka's rolling ball attack, Jun Kubota has Terry Bogard's Power Wave and her own variant of Kinnikuman's Buster...It's clear that the dev team loved fighting games and included dozens of references to them.

But as much as it built up these characters in nonadult releases it would then tear them down when Giga needed money by reducing them down to low rent whores in the visual novel games.

All that Variable Geo needed to be successful was hot anime women in fighting game style fights and the unique drama that comes with that. Basically pro wrestling but for anime fans, with a dash of what fighting game fans liked.

they actually have a few interesting ideas, how(ever) maybeit. avg2 has at least four different guard cancels for each character, but they're situational and not fully invincible, so you have to switch it up. i also don't really mind bullshit like kaori's infinite and reimi shitting out this sort of damage off a reversal, considering it is just a side game, and being on the giving end is pretty fun
it's just got the same problem every d-list 90's fighter has where movement and normals both feel like ass, so it doesn't end up feeling that good to play. its neutral is pretty stupid too with how throwing a fireball then super jumping in has little counterplay, but maybe that's just who i was playing against

Well the actual fighting was trash on the PC-98 because of the system. I don't think you could get an actual decent fighting game with those specs. The 3 games there where fine as a hentai scene collection. Fight poorly (I think second or third game had supers but that was it) then hentai scene, and also excellent intro animated scenes with voices.
The SNES version was ok but still a far cry from an actual fighting game, at least it was playable.
When it finally became an actual game was the Saturn/PSX version (the PC-Engine was ok) with combos and street fighter-ish physics for jumping and hits. They also had a very nice story mode.
The series peaked with the 2nd PSX game which has tons of fun combos, good graphics and animated scenes, to this day I still fire up the emulator with that game just to mess around.

But the one game nobody ever talks about, the PC version [V.G Max], I had it on my hard disk which died and I fucking lost my CD where I had stored it, I looked all over the internet for a good time and could never find it again.
Incredibly playable ultra fast fun combos, chibi sprite styles AND hentai scenes after victories, the game had it all, well except animation. I heard that game was actually developed by people who would later make the Under Night games but I don't know if it's true, I wouldn't be surprised if it is because the game was so fun.

Making an actual playable game and with hentai scenes is possible, in this day and age you could even do one of those Unreal Engine cell shade games like GuiltyGear/DBZFighters/GranBlueVS and have destructible clothes (and possibly an H scene with an outside patch).
Shame that the company and most of what everything that made the game exist is dead now.

>The series peaked with the 2nd PSX game which has tons of fun combos, good graphics and animated scenes, to this day I still fire up the emulator with that game just to mess around.
I'm not gonna lie, this is the game that made me interested in fighting games generally. Before that I only played Mortal Kombat 4 and I sucked ass, spamming moves with Raiden was my only chance to win anything lol. I like this game to the point that I bought myself an original copy straight from Japan, and I usually don't collect for disc-based systems.

You really care about those hentai scenes lol, coomers. The chibi sprites are cool though, I wonder who was the artist for this game. And who voiced the characters, because the console games had a cast of well-known seyiuu.

But looking at combo videos now I guess it was a lot more playable than I thought. Guess it takes some decent/serious coders to get good physics out of the machine.
As for the third game, my bad. I made the post solely on memory, I did a playthrough of the series some 5 years ago and forgot there was only [Variable Geo] and [Variable Geo 2 - The Bout of Cabalistic Goddess] for PC-98. I guess I should have checked wikipedia or something.

It sucks that they didn't include a keyboard config but you can change them in VGM.EXE.
With a hex editor, go to offset 6B3E0 (hexadecimal), there you'll see 8 bytes for each player, in the order Up Down Right Left B1 B2 B3 B4.
By default P1 is T, B,H,F, A,S, Z,X and P2 uses the numpad for directions and arrow keys for buttons (?)

Change these values with DirectInput hexadecimal key codes ( for example https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/DIK_KeyCodes))
I changed P1 to C8 D0 CD CB 1F 20 2D 2E to play with arrow keys and S, D, X, C buttons. Also changed P2's arrow keys to something else to avoid conflicts.

The same control scheme as in PC-98 games. I noticed the line right below looked a lot like the codes I used so I investigated further. And it turns out the devs had a configuration file that has more settings than the config menu.
Create a text file called CommandVGM.txt in the System folder of VGMax.
In this file just write the following line:
KeyBordOffset TRUE

Other commands include
"EroEro0 TRUE" up to "EroEro9 TRUE" to unlock gallery scenes
"ScreenMode Window" for windowed mode (a bit iffy on Windows 10)

Well, an IPS of my modified exe would do less than this simple trick

Nice sprite sheet, where did you get that one? It's not on spriters resource at least.

Because it is a visual novel eroge with rock-paper-scissors "fights" or something like that, no proper fighting game gameplay. Also the art style sucks, the roster is all-new and uninspired. In short - V.G. Neo, both the game and OVA, suck.

>Aren't these uncensored in the first place? AFAIK only the Saturn version have humiliation scenes intact.
I meant the PC-98 sex scenes that have the genital area pixelated (well more pixelated than the usual PC-98 pic) due to Japanese law. I can't show them well here but there are 2 defeat pictures for every character on the first game, and 3 for each character on the second PC-98 game. Those can be easily decensored with any PC-98 friendly pixel image editor (to stay in the color limit / dither pattern)
By the way, the pictures used in the Saturn version are just the 1st of the 3 defeat CGs and they are heavily altered. For example on Saturn Kaori falls in a vat of water (?) and that's it, on PC-98 she falls in a vat of white cream (?) then 2nd pic is her in all fours, then 3rd pic is her getting splashed by cream on her face. So I wouldn't call the Saturn scenes intact.

>>10292578
>There's a gallery with all the .img files (CGs, all UI elements, even dialogs) on e-hentai, btw.
Yeah I checked that one and saw that there was everything ripped, from CGs, random scenes, each characters background and even all of the game text, but it was missing the character sprites themselves.

Nevermind I just checked Internet Archive and there it was [V.G Custom] It came with a patch as well an alternate exe already patched.
The game runs instantly on my Win7 machine. It just sometimes gives WAV resource error when loading some stages, but if you click ok it just keeps working like nothing.
There is also an issue with the menu and intro talk screens being in one resolution and the actual game in another lower one.

What a bad game, the physics of jumping / hitting / knowdowns are so bad. Combos that worked in other games don't work at all here.
Yuka's fireball doesn't have a proper cooldown, if you are max screen away you can throw another after a long time, but if you are close to the enemy you can just spam another one after the fireball left the screen, for mega spam.
The AI is also bad, for example the bonus fight after the last enemy for Yuka is Tamao. So the programmers said "ok lets make her do her anti air when the player jumps at her" but made it that if you jump in place or even back with a kick, she still does her anti air trying to counter you. So you just jump back kick and spam fireball for perfect wins.

>>10281283
>On top of that, Custom also removes the super meter
I thought the game didn't have supers but the CPU does them and you can do them in practice mode. How to know when you can actually super if you have no bar?
The game uses a system like King Of Fighters '94 where if you are low energy you can spam supers all day long, in this case after you get to the 2nd bar. And if you get to the last third or so of your 2nd bar you can do the Special Super, also being able to spam it infinitely. That means Yuka full screen laser beam forever, pretty busted.

At least the intro animations are the same PC-98 ones before they were digitzed, you can even see the marks of the color pencils Kimura used.

>it's a bunch of newbies encountering information for the first time that I've already known about since thirty years ago
big yawn

For a limited time only I will grace you subhumans with my presence and for the remaining duration of this thread answer any questions you may have of my saint Kim(whom I've met personally while he was promoting Gun X Sword during a tour of the US) and any series he has worked on including but not limited to Variable Geo, Viper, Ano Machi, On Air, Harlem Blade, I swear to God you all don't know important this man was to the Japanese economy when Code Geass was running he could basically crash its GDP with a single bad episode and an entire generation of Japanese youth was shaped by him too, no this isn't an understatement JUST LOOK AT THE INTRO TO GAOGAIGAR, LOOK AT IT. THIS INSPIRED AN ENTIRE GENERATION.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7UjDcwUltw

WHEN A MATH STUDENT WAS GETTING BEAT UP IN AN ALLEY HE'D RECITE THE INTRO TO GAOGAIGAR AND SOMEHOW COULD FEEL NO PAIN AND SMASHED THEIR FACES IN AND THEN PUKED AND PASSED OUT IN A WOMAN'S RESTROOM WHERE HE MET HIS FUTURE WIFE AND

YOU THINK ANYONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT YOUR STREET FIGHTER CLONE FULL OF FAST FOOD TEA AND SANDWICH SERVING HOES WHEN THIS MAN WAS IN THE TRENCHES LITERALLY DESTROYING OPPOSING SERIES THAT DARED TO SHARE THAT SAME TIMESLOT WHILE INFUSING NIHONJIN WITH A BRAVERY, A FIRE OF THE HEART THAT COULD NOT BE EXTINGUISHED?

THE MAN MADE ANIME FOR CHILDREN. HE MADE ANIME FOR TEENAGERS. HE MADE ANIME FOR MEN. THOSE CHILDREN GREW UP AND ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF TODAY'S POPULAR ANIME.

And a lot of you English-only apes think that *tee hee*, this quirky waitress game sugoi. *hee hee* my ochinchin big when viper *haha* as this man was literally bleeding on the page and breaking off pieces of his soul to get Iron Blooded Orphans out on time.

C'mon anon, AVG2 is also good on its own, and is the only worthwile game in the series as a whole. Even the normal arcade mode is fun enough although Satomi's AI is way too predictable with her constantly spamming Shinkuu Karatakewari jumping attack, which allows the player to combo her from behind as she lands time and time again until time runs out or she's K.O.'d. I've played the normal mode with all the characters and my favorite is of course Yuka, being a decent shoto-clone, with Tamao and Kaori close second. The worst? Pic related I hate Manami so much that I use her as a punching bag in practice mode - there's nothing more relaxing than landing combos on an annoying catgirl and listen to her "nya" in pain.

There were maestros of 16 colors graphics in the mid 90s. Ningyou Tsukai 2 is another example of a game that looks (and plays) far better than the first opus.

Yeah, the pixel art and static character artworks are good and great respectively... until the game proper starts and this impression falls apart. Maybe it's just me, but action games on PC-98 have awful animation... for the most part, at least.

It's a picture from in-game cutscene upscaled with an AI upscaler. At first I thought it was the original artwork that was later put into the game.

Which one were you talking about? Because there are two that I know of.
"[Anthology] Comic V.G.-Max" from 1994-11-01 Where there is a lot of sex and semi explicit stuff, the one where Jun actually fucks Terry Bogard and there is also a wierdo story about plants cloning the girl fighters?
Or "Variable Geo 2 - Comic Anthology" from 1995-04-01 where there is just mild nudity at most, with most of the stories ending with just torn clothes?

By the way the first one has really nice guest art by Masami Obari.

Have you seen to price they command for modern motherboards with less features than from long ago? Most the games I have were stuff I kept from long ago from bargain bins. The most compute I do have is from a Chinese dumphone I post from.

Dude, I know these are fucked up times, but you don't really need a super duper computer. Back in 2017 I told my friend who's a hardcore PC nerd to assembly a mid-end setup for me and he did so, the resulting cost wasn't that high, really. And I had to do something because my laptop from 2008 was fucking dying and taking forever to boot.
>Most the games I have were stuff I kept from long ago from bargain bins.
Those must have been hell of a bargains, then. Some of the stuff you show here on /vr/ was sought after even ten years ago, so I don't entirely believe you on this one.
>He really does know what appeals to me, and Flash Kei got it going on for me.
He was good at drawing pretty women, and even if they're sameface-y, it's still better sameface than Toriyama's. And for me, it's Flash Yuri..

Ohh nice boxed Super Variable Geo, does it come with a lovely illustrated manual? Would it be too much ask if you could take a picture of it, just to know how it looks (not asking for scans or anything fancy) I'll understand if you don't want to even open the box so as to not to damage it further.
Finding scanned manuals is a bit hard, unless it's stuff from Sega, those Sega-retro guys are amazing.

I stitched the Obari guest art from the Anthology, peak 90s power there.

I've been looking for a 1080ti, but they are all over $100USD. Most are cheap stuff, from junk and clearance bins, but some were just stuff that had my interest that I made the effort to get. I didn't really get the appeal of the Dirty Pair series, but I just knew the aesthetic of the Flash OVAs was very attention grabbing.

Absolutely gorgeous, much appreciated. I love game manuals like you wouldn't believe.
From time to time I open my Gameboy boxes and check the manuals, it used to let my imagination fly in contrast to the very pixelated images of the actual game.
I regret not starting collecting this stuff earlier, nowadays the prices are completely moronic.
