Just beat this mother fucker and had a blast doing so. Atmospheric, concise, deliciously dreadful, excellent. In celebration, let's have a thread about D, WARP, and the man who made it all possible, Kenji Eno.

Not a bad game, nice music, but I think a lot more could have been done with the property rather than a RE clone with a sword

Why was Kenji Eno such a star? He never really made major hits did he. Why was he always showing up with superstar devs? He was like SWERY, very well known but nobody is sure why

Don't listen to >>10272013, he's a resentful Sony executive.

Kenji Eno is one of the very few figures in 90s gaming who could legitimately be called an "auteur", in that he -- himself, one person -- was always in complete control of every single one of his games. D was a massive financial success in Japan, arguably the best game on the 3DO, and is also probably the best pre-Resident Evil horror game. Enemy Zero and D2, two completely original games (though still part of the "D series") were also very well-regarded and remain cult classics today. Even his other weird side projects, like Short WARP and Kaze no Regret (an adventure game quite literally made for blind people), still carried his distinct style and attention to detail.

Also, consider: D was released internationally at the perfect time. J-Horror hit its stride in the mid-to-late 90s, and D pretty much had exclusive claim to it in the video game world until Resident Evil and Silent Hill came along.

He wasn't the greatest game designer by a long shot, but he made his impact and made it quite well. Plus, he died years ago, so he'll never be able to destroy his reputation on Twitter.

People always claim Kojima and more recognizable names as being the most ridiculous game makers but there is truly is no one quite as much of a mad man as Eno.

Some of my favorite Kenji Eno exploits include:
>While working at Warp games Eno would create bizarre marketing campaigns to advertise his games, such as including a bag of seed with Real Sound or, most famously, including condoms with condoms
>In order to ensure D would be shipped without any censorship he personally had a "clean" version without the most violent or gory scenes created specifically to only send to the ratings board of Japan who would approve it, then when it came time to actually produce copies he gave the original unaltered version.
>During a press conference to discuss how Enemy Zero would be a Playstation exclusive complete with Sony execs on stage, the trailer he ran went on past the end of the regular footage to a clip of the PlayStation logo morphing into the logo for Sega Saturn and announcing that Warp's latest game, Enemy Zero, would be a Saturn exclusive.
Did he make good games? Not really, but holy fuck did he love what he did and refused to give in to any compromises for his vision on games. It's truly tragic that he passed just as he finally really getting his footing in the industry after D2, I feel like he may have went on to produce genuine classics had he lived. Still, his legacy is amazing in itself and I really think he's among the most lovable devs in gaming, god bless this crazy fucker.

The funny thing is, D no Shokutaku/D was insanely successful at the time of its release. It's easy to forget about now since its basically obscure in the west but according to the 1UP interview it sold a million copies. Presumably this was across all platforms and worldwide, but it seemed like the bulk of the sales came from Japan. It seems fitting though, considering the story about how he was pissed that Sony only printed 20k out of the 100k preorders D no Shokutaku got at the time.

One of the noteworthy things about D; is that all of the FMV was rendered entirely on two Amiga 4000's, which was all they could afford. This game was clearly not rendered on a higher end SGI workstation.

Shot in the friggin' dark here, but I don't know where else to ask: In the mid-2010s, there was an American fanzine-style publication that did an entire issue dedicated to covering WARP's games (and, I assume, Kenji Eno's career in general). It was part of a series of similar boutique magazines that all focused on obscure Japanese games. (Not Boss Fight books, but something along the same lines as that, written by amateur game history enthusiasts/minor journalists.) I desperately wanted it, but had no money at the time. Now that I have money, I of course can't find any trace of it online.

Does anyone remember what this magazine was called? If so, is it still available for purchase? I'd love to know.

He had a very cool attitude about the industry. Pissing off Sony, unapologetically making Enemy Zero frustratingly difficult, making a game for the blind, pulling a switcheroo with D so it wouldn't get censored, and so forth. I've played his games and don't think they're that great, but he's one of my favorite industry figures from gaming history.

What else was there, really, besides Alone in the Dark, and Mansion of the Hidden souls and some PC adventure games? I think D was really propped up for being a good and original 3DO FMV adventure game, that was kind of in the same genre as MYST. But with a horror theme. Japan seemed to have an interesting market for the 3DO. It lead to getting ported to the Saturn, PS1 and PC. The 3DO also did get a Directors Cut that was exclusive to the console.

The Crow City of Angels had nice atmosphere too. I don't know, the Saturn had so many stinkers I still ptsd.
