he's right, faggots. porsche unleashed was the peak of the franchise, and a diverse set of well-designed scenic tracks >>>>>>> open world.

shifting from exotic cars to appealing to ricers was a business decision, not a creative one.

As much as I still enjoy Underground he's right. The neon spinner ricer era didn't even last 10 years and everyone think it's cringe now but they jumped on it because it was the hot shit at the moment. In contrast a game like Porsche Unleashed was about real proper car culture that's been established for several decades and is still respectable and non-cringe.

Undercover permantently killed NFS, ended its cultural dominance, and destroyed its reputation as one of the most popular and successful racing franchises in gaming. it left a huge scar that the franchise STILL hasn't recovered from since. sure Carbon was OK and ProStreet was mediocre, but if those two are the Sonic Heroes of the franchise, then undercover is definitely the Sonic '06 of the franchise.

if someone ever says a franchise is too big to fail or a franchise can't die from just one bad game, I always point them to NFS undercover.

Kind of a shame the 'old' NFS died out after this. It would have been cool if they spun off 'Underground' to be it's own thing, and still have Classic NFS style games.
I think the series took a turn again around Nu Hot Pursuit when they basically made it Burnout. I still enjoyed that game, but it was a shame that the old style NFS didn't seem to ever come back?

What's the point of being insecure about this? It was a silly era in
retrospect, but even the games moved themselves away from it slowly, and they act as a nice, fun time capsule now. You're acting as if
Ferdinand Porsche himself will send an 88mm to your house for not enjoying
"proper" auto culture.

wtf

it was foremost based on the tuner scene which is decades old and spanning multiple countries. even in the first game you could get the RX7 or R34 GTR which could go above 280kph when tuned. rx7 had trouble pushing past 300 because of 5 gearing IIRC, and all cars could be made fast but those are 'big boy' toys no matter how butthurt you are

but the second one had a ton of more serious cars and you could even skip the fast and furious rice shit by going for a sleeper car with carbon parts instead of rice to get the style points.

Weakest one of the classic titles IMO with PC HP2 close second and PC High Stakes third. The tracks just didn't play well with the game's physics, it felt like racing with moon gravity.

Someone has to mod Porsche Unleashed and add tracks and cars of various brands.

I don't think it's possible and it pisses me off

>> No.10268294

>>10268247
It is, there's a bunch of mod cars, just not a lot of them, since it's probably a slightly more involved process compared to the older games due to the more complex physics. It's a shame because it would be the closest you could get to a good, '90s PC simcade with road cars and tracks.
Of course we could also become the change we want to see in the world, late '90s low poly models aren't terribly hard to make.

>> No.10268306

>>10268247
I want to correct myself, there are a ton of mod cars. But they're the usual "rips from another game with 10 times the polycount of the original cars" that look like complete shit.

Undercover was a good game, it was just the formula inevitably dying and the games after it trying to change direction to recover, but that was unlikely to succeed no matter what. This happened to countless other games. Lets take Halo for example, sure Halo 2 and 3 had an insane cultural dominance, but it was still obvious it would be replaced by a new trend sooner rather than later. I don't think any version of "Halo 4" could have been successful, people were moving on already. Call of Duty is a better example of a shooter killing itself by doing everything wrong.

At the time I felt like these were cheesy as fuck, never was much into NFS, but 20 years later I bought them all for my GameCube and they are really slick racers, the style really is amazing, they pulled it off well, and I never watched a single Fast and Furious movie.

He's right though. There used to be two console racing franchises with real cars, GT and NFS. Forza didn't get any love until 2 came out and Project Gotham died after two games. Most of my time was spent playing Midnight Club 2 because it was one of the few games where you could just drive around with no goals in mind. NFS isn't as popular as it used to be.
