best way to experience this in current year?
I have the GOG version, but I am not sure if I should install mods for it.
Are there any "must haves" for QoL? Or do I just do it vanilla?

For 2, i'd recommend using latest unofficial patch updated (https://github.com/BGforgeNet/Fallout2_Unofficial_Patch not restoration project) and sfall for compatibility and some minor QoL updates like modern resolutions, inventory sorting, automatic door opening, etc. For Fallout 1, Fallout 1 Et Tu with only vanilla options (it is a port of F1 to F2 engine) or Fixt. IIRC F1 version of sfall comes with them.

Vanilla is OK. The game has some notable bugs, but you will be experiencing it the "correct" way. If you need extras, go with Fallout Fixt or Fallout Et Tu. You should also consider checking out the original Fallout version 1.0 at some point one day, because it's slightly different.

If you REALLY want Fallout 2's QoL improvements in 1, there's a mod that has 1 in 2's updated engine. Otherwise just play the gog version.

Back when I played the first game a decade ago there was like two different patches, the generally recommended one with all the fixes + waterchip timer extension and another one that apparently restored stuff like kid NPCs. This second patch was incompatible with the first one for whatever reason.

Didn't remember it having sfall. Anyway, updating is not really necessary, some features will be missing but the needed ones - resolution and modern os support - are there.
I also don't remember if it still needs children removal fix or not.

It is nothing like NV. The thing about the first 2 Fallout games is they are hardcore cRPGS. That means you are perpetually at the mercy of your stats, no more; no less. Do a bit of background reading before you go in or we have to listen to you spout garbage like this other retard who think comparing completely different types of games as some sort of insightful comparison. If you’re all about quests and lore (which 3 onwards pisses over) that’s not what FO is about - it’s raw stat based gameplay and dice rolls can utterly fuck you up.

I abandoned my fo2 conversion run because I chose to play as a retard who always wins at gambling. But they extended the gambling nerf from 2 into 1, totally fucking up my character. Being retarded is supposed to be a huge handicap, so I was counting on infinite money to make it worth while. Honestly lots of little changes like this caused problems in my run. All because whoever made it is autistic and chose to tweak the game to work more like 2 instead of just extending the nice features
