How does the Disgaea series measure up as far as tactical RPGs go? Are the must play games ?

I was addicted to these games around the time they came out, bought just about ever one. Name it, I played it.

Disgaea isn't very good, and as far as zany comic tactics games go Summon Night games blasted Disgaea to pieces in spades. It just appealed to the cringy weaboos of the time which wanted their own speshuw wittle series to follow.

The only two which are worse are probably Stella Deus and Chaos Wars. However, japanese people have shitty taste so otaku over there gobbled it up because early 00s otaku where a really weird bunch.

Consider the series' main gimmick: number stacking. Only japs would care to grind just to get bigger and bigger numbers.

its too easy to break the "tactics" part of disgaea games. its more about the thrill of the grind and numbers.
disgaea 1 has a great story and is worth experiencing.

for story disgaea 2 and beyond not so much, but the gameplay only gets better till it peaks at disgaea 5 complete.
disgaea 6 was rushed and tries some weird gameplay changes.
disgaea 7 seems back to normal but isn't out yet.

only disgaea 1 and disgaea D2 are tied together.
you can pick up any game except D2 and be fine story-wise.
every game has a new cast otherwise and old characters are cameos.

Disgaea has abusive stat bloat and routine power levelling which tends to trivialize the “tactical” part of combat. The only decision you make in combat is “how many enemies can I catch in my OHKO AOE”?
Other tactical rpgs usually have fairly balanced if slightly grindy leveling but unless you excessively overgrind in a game like ff tactics or shining force, the combat is still interesting and not a total faceroll like it is in disgaea.
I enjoy the franchise and the art, but if you want satisfying games beyond seeing the massive 7-digit numbers you can look elsewhere.

You grind if you want to, the enemy lv increase isn't just there for more exp but you can also use it to challenge yourself. Figuring out geo chains in the item world is fun.

It's the only s-jrpg worth a shit besides the FFT series, and tactics ogre imho. Every other series just felt like they were on rails with no customization or variability in gameplay.

I recall when it came out, it was acclaimed by mags / reviewers. When the DS port came out, I tried it, and maybe it starts slow, but it just felt a bit boring and not all that funny.

I played the first one when it came to PC. I went in not really knowing much and came out loving it. Thought the gameplay was fun, enjoyed the story/characters, and I love the artstyle. No grinding is needed for the main story, only for some of the post game bosses, which I did all of them. I rarely watch anime or read manga if that means anything, although I've been on this site for 15 years and have a strong tolerance for anime shit. Would recommend if you are looking for a fun time and want to play something that doesn't take itself seriously.

I played 1, 2, and 4
they're the only tactical RPGs I've played but I really liked them
the mobile version of Disgaea 1 had like a fast forward button which made grinding a lot less painful
I wish they'd add Disgaea 2 to mobile so I can play it on breaks at work

You don't have to grind to beat the story, so if you just want a reasonably fun 40-60 hour TRPG they're fine. Then you can get as autistic as you want in the post-game.

That said, I like Phantom Brave better.

Disgaea 5 toned down the gameplay so fucking much though. You could literally set your troops to auto grind for you in the background. Then after every item world run you'd have to check 6 different things, and then play five rounds on a board game. And even after all that, YOU HAD A FUCKING STAT CAP.

That's only for the postgame content, for the main story you don't really need that.

And then there are autists who only touch the story until it unlocks item world, and then they grind for 12 years on a single save so they can set up everything in a "when all planets align" situation so they can do a 100 million billion damage in 1 attack.

I tried this game but i'm an absolute brainlet in this types of games of thinking way ahead of the opponent, moving units to the adecuate places and such. People told me the insane grindan is just for the post game but i found myself struggling greatly agains the first boss. I had fun with the characters and story, liked the artstyle and i waa having fun before i came to the realization that i would have to really use my brain to be able to beat the game without grinding.

I just suck for this types of games.

I like them but the same thing always happens. I get pretty far in and then the game just wants you to grind for hours and I can't be bothered. The best are 1, 4 and 5. 2 is good as well, just not as much as 1, 4, 5. Haven't played 6 or 7

Disgaea is one of the most important games in the genre. The whole series is different, but Disagea's success led to NIS and then other companies just producing a ton of TRPGs during the 2000s.

Not what I meant. In every other game, your characters base stats are not capped, you can just gain more and more levels to get higher stats, then reincarnate and start again with a significant boost because the amount of levels you ever had would get stored and affect your base. So you could keep going higher beyond your max 9999 levels. If there's a cap it's at something like 200k stored levels IIRC, which is not something you can achieve without being a turbo autist.

Disgaea 5 instead gave you a fixed base boost depending on how many classes you mastered, and once you got everything and went to lvl 9999, you had a maxed out base stats of 10M. It didn't matter from there if you reincarnated again to store more levels, or if you used the student/master relation to gain more stats either - you had a fixed 10M and that was it. Anything else after that just depended on getting more Trapezohedrons and farming the godawful annoying board minigame.

tl:dr; in D5 your levels DID NOT MATTER. You had to grind subclasses instead.

So basically, it got casualized. Part of the charm for Disgaea was that you could always just fly higher and higher no matter what.

again, casualized. The entire point of Item World is that it's so random that it can fuck you over simply with a bad roll, and the game warns you over and over about this. Savescumming for perfected weapons in previous games was a mark of complete fucking autism and didn't make much difference to begin with except for maybe one optional superboss with +20 active stronger enemy bills.

hitting max level and reincarnating is the easiest part of endgame in every disgaea. really your levels don't matter, it was always about items.
trying to perfect a yoshitsuna and reloading the game at every single floor was a nightmare and literally not gameplay, but it was the finish line.

they eventually realized this and made endgame maps around having a team of MAX stat characters, and gave you other shit to grind that isn't constant reloading the game.
you can complain about casualization, but now you can't fuck up items and there's actual endgame content.
