Looking back on it, SSX had a really strange aesthetic, one that's hard to describe as just "lol snow." There were certainly elements of that 00s optimism with the rounded edges and high contrast, but a lot of the character's designs felt in-line with 90s cyberpunk and Eastern theming.
There's a rasta dude along with a Japanese schoolgirl, a lot of the concept art looked straight out of a manga and the in-game models looked eerily similar to something from a Namco title. The music was all over the place but stayed consistently heavy, since there was a lot of reverb and echo.
Not even other snowboarding games had this kind of commitment, where angelic choirs sing after you get knocked out by a schizophrenic dude with Wayne Static's hair. Or how almost every screenshot has equal amounts of neon blue and harsh white tones.

Seriously, this is key art for a Western game. You can't make this shit up. Nowadays it'd be considered "too anime" for normie's palates. Pretty sure this artist also did pin-ups for Jak and Daxter, which similarly had a very Eastern aesthetic to it.

don't get me wrong dude, but it was literally just trendy 90s/2000s clothing that mixed whatever was popular at the time. just google "90s rave fashion". it's cool that YOU saw something deep in it, but to everyone else it was just current year fashion.
there are, of course, somewhat eclectic roots to it all—like the fact this aesthetic drew on 70s bright solid colors, especially neon orange, and the whole sci-fi craze of that decade with its silver suits and rounded edges; or how this whole y2k fashion largely owes to Wipeout and Design Republic, who in turn, again, based it on 1960s-70s graphics design. or how the whole 90s "geometric style" of cartoons with thick outlines like Dexter again is a nod to aforementioned stuff. or how rave culture was actually heavily rooted in drugs, e.g. why these fags often had pacifiers with them to chew on when the drugs kick in, or how the tunes often sounded like sirens because the drug induced feeling of danger.
but in the end it's all about as deep as 80s mullets and zubaz.

We saw it everywhere else so it never seemed out of place, it was just stylish. But I can understand how someone born after 2010 might feel that way.
