Decent platformers for handhelds? I was positively surprised by DKL - if only they had decreased the size of the sprites for handheld so I could see more than three character-widths ahead...

Check out >>10257834 and pic related. Super Mario Land 2 and some of the Sonic GG/SMS games are also pretty solid. GBC has Mega Man Xtreme games, a weird DKC port, Shantae, Santa Claus Jr, and a few others

I've been playing the sequel to your picture lately and it's been surprisingly good. Absolutely insane pick for a Switch remake though. Anyways, those kinds of puzzle platformers suit handhelds well.

I grew up with a Gameboy but no SNES, and therefore DKL over DKC. I love all three games. The two Kirby's Dream Land games for GB are excellent as well (the first is short an easy, but the "extra" hard mode is surprisingly tough. 2 is just a charming good time). Super Mario Land 1 is a bit basic, but 2 is a solid Mario game and once the series becomes Wario Land it's very much it's own thing. The Mega Man GB series has it's fans, but I never found one that grabbed me like the SNES ones. If we're talking about games for later handhelds, though, the Mega Man Zero series for GBA is *chef's kiss.*

>Decent platformers for handhelds?
I'm going to give OP an early Christmas present and list some good Game Gear stuff, Sonic and Disney to be more specific, since those are the highlight platformers of the console to me:

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic Chaos
Sonic Triple Trouble
"Castle of Illusion" starring Mickey Mouse
"Land of Illusion" starring Mickey Mouse
"Legend of Illusion" starring Mickey Mouse
"Lucky Dime Caper" starring Donald Duck
"Deep Duck Trouble" starring Donald Duck

The Smurfs is a banger, though im pretty sure the dragon boss cant be beat if you play it on the hard difficulty. Only other criticism i have is using lines is a little slippery.

On GB, Looney Tunes and Hammerin Harry are some high tier games that people don't really talk about.
Whichever Batman game is the really good one too. I think It's Batman: The Animated Series.

I still don't understand how they thought it was fine for release... they didn't optimize it for the Game Gear's screen at all, like they did for Sonic 1, and the worst part is that there are sections here made HARDER than the Master System, it makes no sense... the 1st boss is the main thing that comes to mind, on Master System, where you already have a better resolution, the bombs always bounce low... and then on the Game Gear where you CAN'T SEE MUCH they changed it so the BOMBS BOUNCE DIFFERENT EACH TIME. I'll never forgive them for doing that to my kid self.

P.S. If you haven't already, play the Master System version, it's actually an excellent Sonic title on that console and I love playing it, it's just that they didn't optimize it at all while porting it to the Game Gear, but it's a good game.

I might check it out, I remember getting walled by the minecart level since you can't see jack ahead of you in the GG version.

I hope you have a fun time if you get around to playing it, changing the version genuinely made this one go from one of my least favorite Sonic titles to one of my favorites by far, it becomes a lot more manageable when you can actually see things like in the Genesis titles... also, getting a 100% completion run here is a lot more fun, at least compared to the Genesis version, because the Special Stages in Sonic 2 are a pain, while in this one you just find the Chaos Emeralds in the levels by exploring, it's really fun, though some are placed in really cheap places to find without a guide or something... but if you don't get 100% Tails dies in the end, so do it. Anyways, cheers!

I've finished both Sonic & Tails and Sonic & Tails 2 recently, and I have to say... they feel like a lot of missed potential, because of one change they've made from the previous duology... the emeralds. In Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, you just found them in the levels, which was fun as it gave the player a good incentive to explore... but in this duology we had the return of special stages for the emeralds... I don't mind these much, but after getting used to not having them in the previous titles, it's not an exciting thing to see them back, especially since they're not much fun, especially on Sonic & Tails 2... also, Sonic & Tails asks you to get 100 rings to just access the special stages, this means levels are filled with rings, which makes them quite an easy time if you're just playing from point A to B, and levels are way too short... also, nothing gets my blood boiling more than getting around 90 rings only to get hit. Sonic & Tails 2 is probably a bit better in regards to accessing them, but the level design in them, especially special stage 3 and 5... I didn't enjoy playing it, at all, and it's a shame, since these titles feel a lot more like the Genesis titles, with a spin dash and even super peel out, a lot more slopes too... but level design and special stages make them a lot worse. I don't want to give people the wrong idea though, both are good video games, but could've been a lot more, still worth a playthrough though.

Because it looks really cool but doesn't have much. It's 20 minutes long and even the Extra mode is pretty basic aside from a few bosses.
