Let's have a thread about old fighting games. It's amazing how many fighting games that capcom and SNK used to put out, and how well done they were. Post your favorite ones, see if you can get some matches going, or just reminisce.

The old Jojo Fighting game was the first fighting game that I actually got into, learned and got good at. I've gotten pretty rusty, but it's fun jumping in the GGPO room every now and then and playing.

If you read Jojos, you will also notice that this poster was done in the style of part 5.

Mark of the wolves is when i started to hate SNK, at that point i was playing both Capcom VS SNK and Garou and CvS just blew it out of the water.

I was pretty mad that SNK still used that old engines and the sound is terrible.

After Garou SNK games were a wait and see thing for me, and not a day 1 purchase anymore.

Yes, and it's a little underwhelming. The redone backgrounds suck, the redone art isn't that great, the new interface style is horrid, the new music is abysmal, and the new characters fuck the balance over.
It's still '98 and it's still great, but the original remains the definitive version.

I played this one a few days ago. It's got a interesting system where you can copy an ability of the opponent you defeat. I don't think it's very good as a fighting game, but hell I had a lot of fun with it. Yeah I think a lot of the Virtua Fighter mythos comes from just a handful of poorly conveyed stories from the 90's like "In Japan they take Virtua Fighter 2 so seriously you can enroll in classes to learn how to play as Akira!" when in reality it was probably some obscure promo demonstration by a tournament player or something. Stuff like that used to get trumped up all the time. The actual Japanese people I know who play fighters in the arcades are very laid back and don't take anything too seriously.

Similar split happened with Darkstalkers 2 and 3, although 2 actually sold quite a bit more than 3. In fact, the two series parallel each other fairly closely in terms of how they played out: The first set the basic concepts but were rough around the edges and unbalanced. The second refined the first, added a few new things that complemented what was there already, and became solid, playable games. Then the third tried to reinvent things and became largely different games.
