Can you guys help me find "pure" platformers similar to Super Mario World? A bit of combat is ok but the game should focus more on platforming, so no Castlevanias allowed for example.
Despite playing retro games for so long my list is quite small. Off the top of my head:
>SMW
>SMB3 (all stars)
>Umihara Kawase
>Aladdin
I tried Kirby and Bonk recently and didn't like them.

Kirby wouldn't really count as a pure platformer by your standard anyway, right? Anyway, there are plenty of mascot platformers that should fit your needs. Just look up a list of those.

*Donkey Kong Country series.
*Sonic series.
*Ghosts n Goblins is pretty combat heavy but it's combat really revolves around jumping in a way to not die so that might be relevant.
*Gimmick, for NES
*All other Mario games
*Pop Eye, arcade
*Circus Charlie
*Aero the Acrobat series

you might be playing bonk wrong. you're supposed to play with the turbo switch all the way up so you can make bonk spin/fly. you can easily juggle opponents and get lives this way and it's fun to fly around.

>> No.10248036

>>10248031
the turbo switch on the oem controller I meant, sure there is turbo functionality on whatever emulator you're using...

>>10248036
oh and turbo only on the spin button, if you have it up on the jump button you won't be able to perform higher jumps...

OP you really mean to tell me you've never played Donkey Kong Country or Sonic the Hedgehog? Give SMB2 and SML2 a shot as well. Man, I've never met someone who's played Umihara Kawase but not the basic platformers lol

That's what happens when gaming forums have an obsession with obscurity.

Try Donkey Kong '94 on Game Boy. You might like Rayman but it's supposedly pretty challenging later on. The Adventure Island series is also good. It's probably on just about every Famiclone in existence if you want to play it on a CRT or something

If you really like Umihara Kawase check out Ristar, he has stretchy arms similar to the fishing rod.

Play the other Sonic games, most people gravitate towards 2 or 3K but I have a soft spot for CD. There's also Knuckles Chaotix, the Game Gear titles, and the Advance games. If you like Disney check out DuckTales or Darkwing Duck on NES. The SEGA Disney games are also pretty good.

Idk whether to recommend Mega Man because there is a lot of combat, just not in the same style as Castlevania. Try Mega Man X on SNES and see if you like it, then try some of the others if you do. Tons of games I could list but trying to stick with the essentials

I think Doremi Fantasy, Milon's game on the SNES qualifies. It's a little on the easy side with adequate level design but the cutesy minimalistic artstyle and haunting music really sell it imo, it's very strong on the artistic side of things.

Bummer you didn't like Bonk, I've always like the flipping headbonk mechanic of those games, the second one in particular is a lot of fun but eh.

Sonic might be what you're looking for, its a pure platformer where the only combat is, well... Sonic himself, or the other characters you can play as, depending on the installment, by jumping on the enemies, or spinning into them, essentially when you make Sonic into a ball, he destroys enemies, otherwise he takes damage... so platforming on Sonic is definitely the main focus, but that's not all... it's physics based platforming, pinball to be more specific, and it can either make or break the experience for you, I personally adore it so much.

If the Mega Drive installments, and their heavy emphasis on physics, is making you struggle, and you want something more traditional, the Master System and Game Gear ones have you covered, at least to me they're some of the most polished I recall playing, if these don't work either, there's also the Advance titles on GBA, the sort of Sonic 2 remake on Neo Geo Pocket Color, Sonic Mania if you want something more current, or the Rush titles on DS for something faster, though it's not as focused on platforming. I hope you have fun!

P.S. On Sonic's Mega Drive installments, don't forget to press down on slopes and on the top of loops to roll into a ball and gain more speed and momentum, also rolling makes you less likely to lose your rings when hit, as you're invulnerable to most hazards in this form. Have fun!
