The only silly thing about the SF2000 is its Wiimote analog stick. Unless some people like to pseudo-use it as an arcade stick/find it easier than a d-pad for fighting game inputs. I fucking love the thing so much otherwise, it's my go to for SNES, Genesis, and GBA emulation except for the heavy 3d GBA titles like Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam and the 3d platformer Obelix & Asterix game. It can run Star Fox and Yoshi's Island now with updated firmware but can't handle heavy 3d GBA titles.

I spent about 5 to 6 hours this morning reading 10 year old forum posts on gbatemp and using obsoleted windows abandonware cmd-only software i had to run in wine, python scripts for decrypting UMD data and converting audio to ATRAC3, all this just to figure out how to inject custom CD-ROMs into native PC Engine emulator on PSP made by Hudson themselves (Hudson also made PC Engine itself, so emulator must be really good)
if you thought getting CDDA for PSX games on PSP was hard, you aint seen nothing (that's child's play now). it felt nice after i got it working, i can finally play that magical girls game /vr/ was shilling all this time
on a technical note, looks like Hudson made 333mhz mandatory clock speed for this emulator as running in 222mhz results in slower audio that eventually get picture desynced (noticed it during cutscene)
in contrast most ps1 eboots can run at 222mhz if you mess around with pops version (though sony did intend on running ps1 games at 333mhz too)

Just got my RP2S, and I spent most of last night transferring games and BIOSes, downloading RA cores, figuring trying to figure shit out like how to get rid of onscreen controls, which cores work best for which systems, only to finally start a game and realize that it doesn't recognize the Retroid Pocket controller, and mapped A to B and B to A, and the only way to fix it is to individually remap every button, AND I can’t figure out how to get FFW working. I can safely say that anyone who says Android is better than Linux is on-par with the spergs that say Linux is better than Windows. FUCK this, I’m going back to my MM+ until I get the morale to go back and work on this thing again.

well, for one it runs wpa1. which means your router need to support multiple ssids. second is, you still would need to assign new zone and its own subnet just for psp to keep it sandboxed from other household devices. on top of that you have to set up a firewall and only allow things you want to be used from your lan ecosystem, but not others. for example in my case i actually really like FTP functionality for psp. that's how i quick transfer screenshots for /vr/ posting without needing a cable each time. another funny situation is that you can just firewall all internet from psp subnet and only allow lan (useful for adhoc gaming), then potential spoofer will get completely cucked
and one last thing, and that's kind of placebo but still, whitelist only psp's mac on that ssid. psp packets rarely gonna travel so theoretical spoof will only have small window of opportunity (in my case rare FTP usage), mac whitelising, as placebo as it is, won't hurt in this case

I’ve been a chinkheld enthusiast more recently but was always a snoy fuckboy growing up, so I kind of want a vita now as the most intensive game I care to play emulated is star fox 64 and my understanding is n64 emu isn’t great on vita but sf64 runs flawlessly

I'm still loving my Samsung Galaxy M30 setup as a dedicated emulation device, and with a cheap telescopic controller that's been working well, a MOCUTE-060, it all really comes together, the controller feels good for the price.

I was afraid it might've broken due to the battery indicator flashing, indicating a low battery level, even after charging for hours, but I haven't had any issues, and any attempt to check the battery level through 3rd party applications I went with ended up in an error, so I guess it's just whatever indicated the battery inside the device isn't working, but the controller itself works.

I'm having a good time on RetroArch, though running any demanding shaders hasn't worked well, this isn't a powerful smartphone by any means, also I struggle with the abundance of settings sometimes, not often though.

I'm also enjoying the Android experience, I can customize it how I feel like customizing it, Saber on my home screen is a major plus for me, alongside the OST from Sonic Mega Collection Plus running in the background.

I've been playing mostly SEGA stuff, Game Gear has a fantastic library that I'm only now getting truly into, and Mega Drive has been a blast, pun intended, to emulate after using the Genesis GX Wide core, avoiding the negative space on such a wide screen, but not by stretching it, instead it lets me actually see more of the screen. I'm really fond of this setup so far, just a blast to use.

RISC-V is a new architecture and both ARM and RISC-V are considered RISC. It is lower cost because the ISA is free although the design isn't and made by a non-profit committee so chip makers can undercut ARM the company who charges for using ARM IP combined with their designs. The performance may not be quite there compared to the latest and greatest but in a market like portable retro handhelds, you don't need that and it's going to be interesting to see new chips with RISC-V battle it out with ARM's older designs and if they can undercut that which I think they can. However, it's still early days. The D1 in the handheld I posted is equivalent to basically the first Raspberry Pi in speed more or less with it being faster in some key areas like vector processing.

I went with a similar approach
Picked up an old Samsung Tab E at a local auction place for $50, bought an iPega telescoping game pad off Amazon for about the same price. Tossed in an microSD for extra storage, cheap silicone case and screen protector, and away I went. Retroarch runs nicely on it, SNES, Sega, PS1 seem to run beautiful so far, but devilution (Diablo 1, I still had my original discs from high school that I had to pull the source files from) and Grand Theft Auto III were available from the play store, so that’s where I’m spending my time. It’s a little bulky, and if I had to do it again, I’m thinking I’d have gone your route with the phone instead of the tablet, but the screen size is nice for watching movies.

Also had a Game Gear growing up. Jurassic Park and Sonic Chaos were my favourites (only because they were the ones I had the patience to beat)

I think the smartphone has the main advantage of the screen size, being more compact, for sure, but your setup has advantages too, while not as portable, I don't consider this a truly pocketable setup we can easily take outside anyways, at least not without a bag or something, so in this case you get more screen... and a much better aspect ratio than modern smartphones, which are usually ultra wide, while tablets are just wide, there's less negative space, unless you use an older smartphone that is, when they had bezels and a 16:9 aspect ratio, it's just better for retro.

Overall, I think your setup sounds incredibly cozy, anon! Just laying back after a long day, on your couch or bed, with that nice screen right in front of you, little to no negative space, and a proper controller to play... it's just sweet, and you got it for relatively cheap too, it's also good in the sense that a tablet doesn't do video games only, like you mentioned there's movies and stuff. Also, it's nice to see a fellow Game Gear fan, I never owned one growing up sadly, but fell in love with its library years later, Sonic Chaos is quite a cozy time, one of my favorite Sonic titles.

So I've had my Retroid Pocket 2S for a couple days now, and truthfully I think I can safely call it my new main handheld. Face buttons aren't quite as good as anbernic's desu, but the dpad, sticks, and stacked shoulders are all so good that it more than makes up for it. This may legit be the best dpad I've ever used, bar none.

Not sure I can call it the best handheld, but I can certainly call it the best pocketable one.

Well, I use Samsung Music to play music, so I just downloaded that on this smartphone, and added the Samsung Music widget on the home menu, it can be done by doing a sort of clamp motion with your index finger and thumb, there you'll find an option to add widgets, just look for the Samsung Music one, then drag and drop to where on the home menu you want the music player to be in.

And the romsets only work for one type of emulator (final burn neo or mame 2003) so you need to decide beforehand. And even frontends like retroid pocket or daijisho can't scrape games, so you have to launch through only retroarch.

In this picture I have one of those (with an Everdrive inside) and four AA batteries, so it would make a pretty good GBA carry case just so long as you don't need a bunch of individual cartridges. I don't think I would want to put anything thicker than that GB cartridge case in it though, I'm afraid it would put pressure on the device that is in the main compartment.

I like smaller devices like the Game Boy Micro and the PSP Go. Very cool little gadgets that get the job done for some nice on the go gaming when you're on the train or something. It's too bad that both systems lean more towards being collector's items simply because of the prices. The original 3DS is my personal go to, a nice little handheld that's perfect for playing my GBA and DS RPGs. The GBA, despite how many SNES ports it has, can't replace proper SNES emulation though so a New 3DS could cover that if you want it, but even the base New 3DS model can't compare to that premium feeling original model.

Had a Q36 mini for around a year now, tried many different games, but only certain games fit the device perfectly:
Turn-based strategy and puzzle games. Pokemon Crystal hacks and the 2 Pokemon trading card games work great, and Tetris and Pinball games are perfect for the quick suspend and resume.
The controls are just precise enough to enjoy platformers, did clear Super Mario Land but Donkey Kong country was not fun.

Remote joy is just to mirror (stream) your psp screen over usb. There are other plugins that will let a pc controller be recognized by psp. Without those you use the psp itself as the controller, I forgot if you need a driver, haven't touched this stuff in years

I think it also helped that Visualboy was so easy to use, you don't need any kind of computer literacy to just click "open file". Combined with the fact that two face buttons make it super easy to use with a keyboard.

Can't think of any other emulator that was so easy to pick up, while being so accurate and low-power on day 1

I didn't want it to look like best possible scenario CRT, cause that's not what older games looked like to me growing up. They looked like a shitty composite signal on an ok screen, so to me this feels more authentic than a lot of the other filters I see people use.

Also am I the only one that doesn't even remember CRTs having curvature that pronounced like a lot of shaders do it? Honestly I've just been having fun tinkering with filters in general. I've never really tinkered with Retroarch before, most of my emulation experience has been standalone emulators. I'm honestly surprised at how much you can get out of this 480p screen, and it's been a delight to use em.

Also total agreement on the bubble thing. The reason it didn't look weird on actual CRTs is because the bubble shape WAS the screen, You didn't have weird black curved borders. It's sorta like how a lot of AAA games add all these blurs and depth of field effects for "realism", even though real life doesn't look like that because of how your eyes actually process the world around you.

I've decided to get a BSP-D6 controller for my phone, the Backbone One and Kishi V2 looked quite nice and comfortable, but this looks just like them, except it's way cheaper... but I feel torn on what color to get, the White/Black one looks a lot like the PlayStation Edition Backbone One, and current PlayStation products overall, and I like it, sort of makes my phone look like Sony's PlayStation Portal, but way more useful and cheaper... but the Gray/Black one reminds me of the PlayStation, the original, and I love that look... it's hard to decide which looks nicer, especially as a Sony fan.

If you play in square-pixel ratio (what I prefer) rather than squishing to 4:3, Megadrive is actual extremely close to 3:2. The problem is that the 351p's low resolution screen is fucking horrendous for scaling MD, the chip can't handle Nuked audio + a frame of runahead, and to be frank I just don't think 3.5" does justice to the games anymore. KTR1 doesn't have any of those problems, but it's expensive and pretty DIY last I checked.

For Megadrive and GBA, I actually think it's worth looking into the widescreen handheld options. There's a lot of good ones at good prices, and it's easier to cope with the black bars on slightly wider content like MD and GBA.

To a large extent, 6th gen emulation isn't even based on nostalgia but exploring older games in your favourite franchises. Pokemon isn't on Super Nintendo, so people downloaded the GameCube game. Spider-Man on SNES isn't worth playing, whereas Ultimate Spider-Man is. GTA isn't on Super Nintendo. Smash Brothers isn't on Super Nintendo. God of War isn't on Super Nintendo. The list goes on for franchises that are popular today that were also on 6th gen but not 4th.
