What are some /vr/ games that largely take place in a snowy environment? Early 3D games preferred, but 2D is fine as well. I'm especially in the mood to play something with a cold, dark moody atmosphere.

By that logic the first several levels in Shadow of the Empire are also snowy. Back in the day I thought that had the iciest levels in a game. Alot of games had snow levels back then I always thought Shadow of the Empire had the coldest. I think it had to do with the darker, more hardcore thematic tone of the game.

Metal Gear Solid and early parts of Mega Man Legends 2 off the top of my head. Parasite Eve is set in winter but not on a particularly snow year in NYC.

SnoCross. Not enough Winter driving games. Since that seasons sells a ton of games it's surprising that there aren't more wintery games of every genre possible, but maybe not every developer could pull off a good range of effects?

How playable is this game? I generally enjoy late 90s PC games quite a bit but these older 3D ones (not counting the BIG names like Doom) often seem a bit impenetrable.

The biggest hurdle when playing it today is probably the low framerate. The mouse steering can take a bit to get used to as well. It also has joystick or keyboard controls, but it's really made for the mouse, sniping especially. It's similar to the original Doom mouse controls where you push the mouse forward to accelerate and sideways to turn.

If you can get used to the controls and low framerate, it's a great, very unique game though. It's one of my favorite single-player strategy experiences. But yeah, if you find old 3D games difficult to get into in general, then Midwinter probably won't be easy either.

If you're looking for comfy, I wouldn't recommend Mizzurna Falls. To get anything other than a bad ending you have to really be on top of driving around and hitting story events with everyone's schedules.

it has a lot of good ideas but attempting to legitimately engage with it (without guides or cheating) isn't fun because of how poorly designed it is. you'll be playing the game wandering around wondering how to progress forver and it'll turn out you didn't talk to a person at a specific time four hours ago and now you have to start the game over.
