When I was a kid I accidentally crushed my friends banjo kazooie cartridge on the same day that I borrowed it so I told my mom that I planned on buying a new one with my own money. For some reason she heard this and made me return the *broken* cartridge to my friend then got in a screaming argument with *his* mom and said I won't be buying a new one. I almost lost my friend over this and to this day I cannot play banjo kazooie without feeling awkward.

One of the reasons why you would come across game cartridges with torn labels is because of rental shops like BlockBuster, Hollywood Video, Video Update (here in Canada), and all the other old rental chains. They would intentionally put security stickers all over the cartridge that were designed to tear the game labels if they were removed incorrectly. Most of the time, these rental shops would sell their old rental games as 'previously played' and people would buy them with the rental stickers coated all over them. People would try and rip them off themselves usually resulting in ripping apart the labels in the process. Though renting a game and just stealing it was also a thing too. Which is why many of the rental shops would ask for a drivers license.

Well I see two scenarios. Chemical imbalanced aka fucked in the head or just bad parenting. Lots of kids who would otherwise be smart enough to understand the concept of opp, often get fucked up by their parents tendencies to destroy and/or hoard. My brother, sister and I learned through our friends about taking care of property, we didn't know any better as kids. I thank Christ for a few of my friends families their mom's and dads are like surrogate parents. My mom is bat shit insane and suicidal and my dad was a drug addict. It was a little rough but my friends helped me by teaching me instead of just dropping me altogether and I know it's their parents that told them to try and understand my situation and to help. Anyways, yeah before I had the knowledge, I had destroyed their stuff, not even thinking about what how that would make them feel. Bad impulse control.

My copy of sculpters cut was weird since the front label is in perfect shape, but the back label was all fucked up. I actually just ended up tearing off what was left of it some years ago.

And as if the stickers were not bad enough, my copy of the original clayfighter 63 had physical branding of Blockbuster melted into the plastic of the cart.

>My copy of sculpters cut was weird since the front label is in perfect shape, but the back label was all fucked up. I actually just ended up tearing off what was left of it some years ago.

It probably depends on the Blockbuster location. I think some chains may have only put the rental stickers around the front label, and one over the back label, while others would just stick a security label over the label itself intentionally. I had a resident Evil 2 N64 cart that I purchased 'Previously Played' from a Hollywood Video label across the top of it that would leave 'Hollywood video logo' residue if you tore it off. But I use to purchase all sorts of 16bit games second hand from rental shops. It was pretty common to see them unload their old inventory by just selling it as 'pre-played'. Use to come across a lot of carts in second hand shops with rental stickers on them too. While I can't say every game with a torn label was once a rental game, I can say that perhaps a fairly big percentage of them are.

I knew by default to take care of my games. Then I got a PS2, which was my first console with disc games. A combination of cartridges being fine to leave laying around and seeing other people leave discs laying around cause me to leave PS2 games laying around. None survived in the long run, whereas my SNES and GameBoy games are still in excellent condition.

II think with 'rare' game rental only releases, it might be best to just leave the rental stickers on. But in any case, rental stickers were designed to be a security device that would tear up the game label underneath it when you tried to remove them. It would be a way to devalue the game and give second hand shops an indication that the cart may have been a stolen rental. They could just contact the local rental shops and see if they are missing any copies of game X. But then again, many of the big rental chains would also just sell their old cartridges to make room for the newest consoles. Image related is my original copy of Revenge of Shinobi (the first Genesis game I ever owned outside of the pack-in) which I bought from a friend of a friend back when I was like 12 years old. It never came with a manual or a box and always had a torn label. It was stolen from a rental shop back then. But whoever had it could not pawn it off, because of the torn label.
