Of all the options that there are, what's the best way to play this? Ideally widescreen and modern controls, but with the 'soul' intact. I want to introduce it to someone.

Get the original PC release, and apply a couple of patches to make sure widescreen cooperates. If you don't like the default controls, it allows you to map the buttons of your choice.

2. drop these files in libertycity.net/files/gta-vice-city/190877-revc-ps2-resources.html
3. get revc and extract into the folder

I don't understand this meme, i have had 4 computers and every single one ran the GTA games fine out of the box, the controls are fine on VC and SA and they are acceptable in 3. The only issue I have ran into was very recently SA randomly stopped working correctly.
