ITT we talk about the more positive side of poverty gaming.

Post LCD handhelds that you actually enjoyed.

Picrel is a bomberman game from a line of Bandai keychains. There were a lot of conversions in this series. Crazy climber, and pac man also got keychains like this- and they’re pretty alright

What’s the best LCD game/conversion you’ve found? Typically puzzle games work the best, but I think it’s interesting when they try to do more action type games

The beatmania pockets by Konami are pretty fun

They usually have around 10 ish songs, though they’re shortened.
They play just as you’d expect, and the audio quality is kinda passable in some of them. came in all sorts of versions too with different songs, or based on the beatmania spin-offs like ddr and guitar freaks

I have this one, a yellow Pacman handheld and one SegaSonic game where you need to dodge the rockets.

Bomberman is fantastic for an LCD game. They gave their best to "port" original game to this tiny thing, even gave it a save function.
Others aren't half bad either.

I really wish I could get that elusive Sonic Adventure handheld by Tiger, it's probably their magnum opus. Catching a mythical beast would be easier though, it's incredibly rare and expensive.

Japan seems to have gotten the better end of the deal with these things.
When tamagotchi got popular the whole genre of “little keychain games” got real popular again

Things like pocket dungeon actually kick ass. It’s a mix between a tamagotchi and a mini RPG. It’s got multiple episodes, and floored dungeons, and even multiplayer battles.

Here’s a bit of gameplay, it’s a genuine real bideo game.

Each chapter has exclusive monsters ala Pokémon, which you can capture and use in battle. You can trade them too if I remember right.

I’d love if Konami put these on mobile or something. It’s an awesome time killer game

The whole resurgence of lcd games from tamagotchi is what got us the VMU, and the pocketstation, which felt like the natural evolution of the doodads.

But then the Dreamcast did it’s whole bit with getting discontinued after 2 years. And then it was basically over it feels like

I think maybe this is an actual case of early phone games taking over the market of cheapo casual games like these.

Monopoly is a rather complicated game so it's super impressive that they got it to work on a machine like this. You can do almost anything you can do in the actual board game in this. Had it as a kid, bought it from a resale shop in the 2000s with some Genesis games since I had gotten a Genesis at a yard sale (It had Sonic 1, Sonic 2, NBA Jam, and Zombies ate my Neighbors, so I think I did pretty good.) lost it and recently bought another one from Ebay.

Nope. Nintendo Mini Classics were re-releases of many Game&Watch titles, but they also had a couple new LCD games as well based on things like YuGiOh, Spiderman and Star Trek. I dont think anyone internally at Nintendo developed these however, since these had multiple distributors around the world making them that apparently have small differences between versions, so im assuming whichever regions got the rights to these new IPs were the ones designing the new games, though they are all still fully liscened by Nintendo.

I collect these and this YuGiOh one funnily enough I found at a thrift store by my house, where 5mins prior while walking there I was thinking about this very specific game.

The gameplay from what I remember, was you avoiding the blue eyes white dragons fireballs while you collected cards that would appear so you could power up your dark magician and then shoot back against your opponent.

Another interesting note of the Nintendo Mini series, its the only time Nintendo has ever officially re-released the Super Mario Bros. Game&Watch, since it has never shown up in any G&W Gallery or similar compilation.

It actually has a full set of different stages as you progress before you get harder loops. For the time, I dont think any other LCD game came close, especially not from competitors. The fact they even attempted to squash down a SMB type experience for G&W is pretty neat.

I do get what you mean by it being like Squish though, there is a general theme of avoiding walls and obstacles and as far as an avoiding shit game, I do enjoy Squish much more. Id fucking stab a bitch through to get a Crystal Screen version of it.

Arukuntbh is one of my favorite virtual pets. If you aren’t looking for version 2 or the remake they’re usually somewhat affordable, should be able to get a nice one for around $20 if you look around

Though that might entail importing one from yahoo or something, which has its own cost associated with it..
The map system is really unique compared to other raising mechanics on other Vpets. It’s not just about how many steps you take, but specifically where you go and hang out in the virtual map that affects the kind of things you’ll see.
There’s a lot of game to get out of them, like I said it’s one of my favorites. If you can one for a decent price ($30 ish for a V1, $50ish for a V2 or returns) I’d say go for it. It’s a Vpet I play at least once every few months

I had fun with Tamagotchi as a kid in the 90s. Virtual pets tend to work because they're simple things which don't promise more than what they can deliver guven the limitations, unlike some of the Tiger handheld games which latched onto big licenses and tried to present gameplay which didn't really work.

I actually just got a Uni the other day. Been enjoying it so far. One thing that seems like a missed opportunity is that, even though the Uni has WiFi support, the feature where you invite or visit someone else's tamagotchi is still in-person only. Pretty disappointing. At least with the previous interaction, the tamagotchi pix, you could invite/visit other people's tamas using QR codes.

Thanks anon. I probably won't be buying one right now as I've got other shit going on, but I do appreciate the link. Had no idea they came in purple either. A broken clip probably wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, could probably just make another out of metal or some shit.

There’s a lost art to these handhelds

Most of them were running on 4 bit CPUs, with rom sizes in the range of the smallest Atari games

dungeon quest for example has only 4K of rom.

LCD games with fixed displays came in ever lower spec. Without graphics data to store, game and watch games came in sizes less than a kilobyte.

Coding games in only a few hundred words of data is so impressive to me
You don’t see 4 bit computing being used for games anywhere else.
The rest of the game computing world went from fixed logic to 8 bit machines the moment we stepped away from pong.

Idk I just think it’s neat

I remember getting one of these brick games from an ice cream van (I think the idea was that you got one for free when you bought a whole lot) and it was about the size of those G&W keychain things. I already had a GBC back then but the racing game and what seemed like a Battle City clone were really fun.
Later on they gave away some pinball LCD things (same shell and all) which were not as fun. After that I was a bit disappointed they just gave you a Super Mario Sunshine t-shirt instead of games before going out of business.

I agree. I can't claim to understand game dev too much (I dabbled in some "game maker programs" and Visual Basic a bit, but everything more complicated went over my head), but I'm still amazed they did so much with so little. The brick game I mentioned earlier in my post was absolutely primitive at the time (late 90s/early 2000s) but still managed to be as engaging as some of the Gameboy titles. I've often seen people say limitations bring about creativity, and it seems truer the more years pass.

Of all the kickstarter shit to come about in the past 10 years, I cant believe nothing (that im aware of) has been done to attempt to create a series of new LCD games. Tiger brought back some of their old stuff a few years ago, so its not like the "art" or knowledge of making them is lost. I think those mini-arcade cabinets that have full roms on them like Asteroids or Dragon's Lair have probably filled that niche of the nostalgia seeker market that would be interested in new LCD stuff. Though I guess Bandai keeps it alive to an extent with Digimon and Tamagotchi.

Hell, even just a game that attempts to imitate the basic, simple nature of this stuff would be neat to see. I know Kingdom Hearts 3 of all things had a couple Game&Watch style mini games thrown in it.

I can’t even count how many virtual pet open source hardware projects exist. I see them crop up all the time but WITHOUT FAIL they get a recreation of a version 1 tama, and then never touched again by the creators, or any would be developers.
