I vaguely remember an official English translation of this guide getting released a long, long time ago. I want to say Sony was trying to do some kind of ebook service on PS3 or Vita and this was one of the books available on it. I specifically remember it was this kind of ugly barebones version and not the cool original one with all the extra art.

I have a physical copy. Sadly there's not really much character art in it. There's some more pseudo-anatomical drawings for the major monsters like in those 2 pages though. Things like a drawing of Yawn's skin talking about how it secretes mucous similar to an amphibian and a comparison of a normal shark's snout and Neptune's. There's also a cool little sketch of a Hunter taking a dude's head off similar to the drawing of the Cerberus attack.

Not RE but I shill this one any chance I get because it's fucking fantastic. I would kill for a similar book covering any of the old RE games. It has a section with storyboards for all the CGI sequences and a bunch of concept art of the maps showing how they plotted out the camera angles and designed the rooms.

Material relating to the original game is most interesting, since it went through a few revisions, and they hadn't settled on a formula yet. Like the original push for the logo was the title with an eye behind it. It's also why the title screen has the freeze frame on Chris' eye. A lot of eye imagry but they dropped it for the sequel.

Another question I had was: why are so many of them wearing vests? The answer: The Thing (1982). Barry Burton is just George Bennings from that film, orange vest included.

It should not be under-estimated how massively influential The Thing was to Japanese media and horror. you also see designs lifted from it in Japanese games for literally decades.

Yeah I thought Brad was 28. I think 38 is "old but not geezer" for Japanese games. They try to appeal to teens so make their cast as young as possible. Jill is impossibly young for being some Ex-Navy SEAL (who don't accept women but whatever). Rebecca has a masters in Chemistry and is hired for a police special forces team at only 18.

Mikami btw supposedly does not like Rebecca and didn't want her in the game. She's clearly a cutesy kawaii type to appeal to fans. Mikami instead wanted some cyborg hulk and a wise cracking Eddie Murphy character, so it's nice to see that he was over ruled.

Also this book made me realize how close Aya looks to Cloud. It's obvious since Parasite Eve famously spun off from FF7's development. And to tie this into Resident Evil, Kenichi Iwao was scenario writer for Resident Evil 1. When he joined Square, he told the interviewer he was a big fan of the Parasite Eve novel. Square then took their abortive FF7 draft idea of a New York city blond haired detective and combined it with the Parasite Eve liscense.

It's a WEIRD ass adaption since it's not an adaption of the novel, but a sequel that changes so much it might as well be an original title. Kenichi Iwao then went on to direct Parasite Eve 2 with a draft storyline of his Resident Evil 2 sequel idea. Which I think would have been a totally kick ass sequel idea.

Speaking of, yeah video games are a bit derivative and heavily mashup television and movies from the 80's and 90's. Video games were my first experience with body horror and I thought it was really cool, until I saw they took it all from the Thing.

Ryu's modern design is just Guts, and other characters like Makoto is just Ryunuske from Urusei Yatsura in a Karate Gi. Pretty much everything is borrowed or taken from something else.

Entire sequences and scenes are taken from the Stallone Judge Dredd scene for Resident Evil.

But yes, Parasite Eve 2 is probably the closest we will ever get to a spiritual successor of Resident Evil 1's main storyline and ideas from its original writer. I know some Parasite Eve 1 fans hate the abrupt changes from one game to the other and detachment from Eve's character but I personally loved it. Nails down the lunacy and depravity of mankind ascending to become Gods by creating a new evolved offspring and shedding its humanity perfectly well.

It always left a strong impression on me how much effort they put into the character designs of the various STARS members. I remember reading about them in the manual and expecting to interact with them more in-game, but you find most of them mutilated before you ever even see them. Really enhanced the horror of the game way more than if they had just been generic grunts.

I really like the expanded aqua ring area, but it also ties into one of my disappointment with the remake. Look at these two >>10236920 and >>10236923. They're fucked up genetic freaks. Yawn is some mix of amphibian and snake according to the text and Neptune has a really messed up head compared to a normal shark. It would have been cool as hell to see that concept art brought to life with the graphics the Gamecube was capable of, but they're literally just a normal snake and shark scaled up in the game.
