I have a question. I was thinking of finally getting my first chink handheld. Originally I was going to play GBA/PS1 games to learn a different languages so I was thinking of getting the RG35xx. However, I did notice that the RG405v just came out last week, So I was thinking of getting that since I can moonlight some steam games as well while lying on the couch/bed. Plus the two thumb games will give me a larger game selection.

The only gripe with the RG405v is that it probably wont be optimized until GammaOS is out on it and I have no idea when or if it's coming out. Also another gripe is that I've heard that a lot of retro games are not optimized on android as much as it's apparently optimized on Linux. Not sure about this.

TLDR
I don't know whether I should have a RG35xx or RG405V as my first handheld.

I don't want to sound like a "I think everyone should just use their smartphones instead" sort of poster... but really my main method of emulation recently, to my surprise, has been my smartphone.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy A14, its hardware isn't anything special, it's Samsung's budget option for 2023 I think, but with 128GB of memory and 4GB of RAM it's good enough to run anything up to 32-Bit/64-Bit consoles with relative ease.

I've always despised playing with a touchscreen controller, because I need actual buttons... but after getting used to it, especially with emulators with controllers that feel sensitive and responsive enough, like Lemuroid, playing feels more natural than I would've though, and while stuff that's too fast or complex with its control scheme can give me trouble, simpler stuff, or slower turn based titles, feel really natural.

What I appreciate the most is that it's more portable and practical than any handheld, as I'll have my smartphone with me anywhere I go anyways, while a handheld would mean something else to take with me, and also it's good that I can play stuff like Game Boy and Game Boy Color vertically, while playing Game Gear and Game Boy Advance horizontally, it's versatile and I love it, having these ultra wide, or ultra tall screens, for classics with 1:1 or 4:3 aspect ratios is perfect because the controls fit comfortably on that negative space.

Another thing I didn't like were save states, but having emulators save and load automatically when you quit and come back, it's once again the most practical solution, which adds to the portable experience, maybe I'll only have a few minutes to rest and play something before having to do something else, and in these moments this is perfect.

I was going to buy a dedicated handheld, to at least play at home, but I ended up getting a telescopic controller instead, which I've been using to play in bed, but outside? I don't even feel the need for it anymore.

I tend to prefer shorter titles where I can finish a whole level in a few minutes, to my surprise one thing that works perfectly here is... old handheld stuff, as they were often made with short bursts in mind from the get go. I'm playing a lot of SEGA Game Gear recently, as that had awful battery at the time and developers knew it, so they're good to play from start to finish when you have a little more time, or in short bursts too. Also, Atari VCS, or 2600 if you prefer, is perfect for this too, stuff like Berzerk still holds up and, since the goal isn't to get to an ending or something like that, and gameplay is what matters most, playing for 5min feels just right.

What are some good early handheld RPGs to play on my Miyoo that don’t require a phone next to me to check things out. Played through DQ1 and DQ2 which were both doable, but picking a phone up saved a ton of time at certain points. Now I’m playing through Pokemon Blue and while it’s relatively straight forward, I need to pick up my phone every time a pokemon is about to learn a new ability because the game doesn’t tell me what the fuck the ability actually does.

it’s one of my favorite handhelds. I love the idea of a homebrew centric platform, but things like the wonderswan didn’t give you enough freedom their their home dev tools, and things like the the arduboy are just not good

This thing hits the sweet spot of being capable enough for good software, simple enough, and well understood (because it was completely open source) and popular enough that it has a TON of software

It is unfortunately hard to actually get one nowadays. They’re not super expensive or anything, but they didn’t sell a ton so there’s only ever like one for sale at a time on yahoo auctions. They’re also built pretty cheap

Though I don’t think there’s any proprietary hardware inside it at all, so I guess if someone wanted to they could make a clone.
With how cheap it is to get PCBs made and 3D printing, you could probably cobble together something nicer than the original

Absolutely adored these face buttons, they have a nice precise clicky to them almost like dome switch buttons, but are satisfying to mash like other rubber membrane buttons. Probably just retarded and i already said this like 3 times now, but I swear the d-pad here feels even better than on the 3. don't even need to mention the sticks and shoulder buttons. In terms of controls, I don't think anything beats this. have more thots but can't be assed atm + no one cares anyways.

For their first handheld ever, the SF2000 is unironically pretty fucking solid. For $20-25 depending on accessories and color, it's the best bottom tier handheld by light years. I don't know why people keep trying to compare it with the Miyoo Mini + and RG35XX when the SF2000 is just meant to do long term, durable Genesis, NES, GB, and GBC for $20 in the most form factor yet still pocketable design. For shit like the Vita and 3DS I'd strongly recommend getting a chink handheld unless you already own one and don't want to spend money.
The 3DS' screen just straight sucks. It's low resolution, low quality and because of its awkward resolution you're going with either weird integer scaling or bilinear filtering which looks like shit imo. 3DS' saving grace is its library though, has some great games.

Vita has trouble with higher end SNES like the other anon said, requires modding and unless it's been fixed since I used one last (years back), has this odd quirk where Retroarch doesn't actually save unless you quit the app manually rather than pressing home on the Vita and swiping it closed.

I get both angles, but it seems like a lot of the time wasting can be eliminated by jumping up the gamespeed 4x. I cant go back to real-time pokemon speed, even if you speed up the text, theres still a bunch of pauses in the game itself. Makes sense you get running shoes so early in the GBA versions.

The rk2023 has unbeatable ergonomics for a pocket handheld but the 2s is everything the rk2023 is but better, with more battery, and actual sleep mode. Rk2023 has all the emulator set up done for you, but 2s is android and has a better emulator selection as well as android games. Rk2023 will start heating up playing fucking snes and become unplayably hot on saturn or dreamcast, 2s can play up to dreamcast no problem and only gets obnoxiously hot on ps2 and dolphin.

I managed to 100% complete Sonic Chaos for Game Gear today, I was on my internship, and there was going to be a class at night, I think it was around 4PM when my internship finished, but class was only at 5:30PM, so I found a place to just sit down and relax, opened up Lemuroid and took on from where I left off, I think there were still a couple of emeralds and leves to go. Having this convenience and portability is so convenient, I can look past the touchscreen and all, I got used to it, and it's worth it for being so simple, no need to take another device with me where I go. Overall it's one of the most simple Sonic titles to finish, 100% completion is when things get more difficult, but the way to access special stages, by getting 100 rings, is not ideal for the character and level design, also levels in this feel quite short, though Game Gear had bad battery life, so I get making it short, but to me Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 were a lot better and closer to how the Genesis titles played, even though we have a spin dash and super peel out here. I really enjoyed it still, love the artwork, especially the sprite they gave Sonic this time, the OST, level themes and... how good of an experience it was to play. I finally get the appeal of handhelds, and it's all thanks to a budget Samsung smartphone... anyways, this isn't a post to discretic dedicated handhelds, I think they're pretty sweet, but this just feels better for me personally, still to each their own. Have fun, everyone!

How so? I mean, this is the handheld thread, for us to talk about portables and playing on the go, I completed Sonic Chaos while outside during a brief break between activities, using my current preferred setup for playing outside of my home, and wrote about it. I get people not enjoying it, smartphone emulation that is, especially due to the controls, it's what kept me away from it for the longest time, but now that I'm used to it, I'm enjoying it a lot, of course I'd prefer buttons, but having it all on a single device instead of taking an extra one with me wherever I go is so useful to me. If you're playing on an actual handheld, then I think that's great, write about what you played today and how fun it was, share your own experiences, that's the fun of these threads, I don't know why you're upset at me for talking about mine. I just think it's more practical, though obviously if I'm at home I'll use a controller, since buttons are ideal compared to touchscreen buttons. Also, I'd say that often, if I want to play outside, this is my only real option, for example, if I'm attending any classes that I have to take, but find to be useless, I'll still take them so I don't get punished, but I'll do something else, if I just turn my smartphone sideways and play, it might look like I'm typing a message or something, so college professors, at least from my experience, won't mind... but if I'm whipping out a full on video game controller, or a dedicated handheld, it's a bit more obvious, and they might get upset and lash out at me for it... Basically its a mission-based huntan/gatheran/giga monster huntan/craftan and upgradan sim. Each location is composed of very small zones divided by loading screens. Weapons have a ton of weight to them and there's no lock on so be smart and don't mindlessly hack and slash. Also gotta plan ahead, bring hot drinks in cold environments, cold drinks in hot desert environments, and bring cooked meat since your stamina meter replenishes over time. Each mission pretty much has a 1hr time limit so it's the perfect pick-up-and-play game made for handhelds.
It's a very acquired taste, but if it works for you it becomes very addicting, especially with other players. 4U on 3DS is the best entry point but you may or may not find it easy going back to Freedom Unite/Portable 3rd on PSP.

I can only speak for the experience on the RK2023. JelOS works just fine but the volume can only change 10% at a time, the menu music will start at a set volume level and only change if you press a volume key (ex: device volume set at 20%, menu music is set to always start at 50% and only goes down to the preferred 20% when a volume key is pressed) and that is on a per-song basis so it isn't like just doing it once helps, and brightness can only be changed 10% at a time but there are other brightness settings you can toggle to make up for it. ArkOS lets you change volume and brightness 1% at a time allowing for a much wider range of control there, menu songs play at whatever volume you have set, but, and this can be quite annoying, the Reset button will brick your device when pressed, causing you to need to power off the device, take out the ArkOS card and put in the JelOS card, turn device on, then off after it's loaded to the main menu (unless you want to continue with JelOS instead), then take out the JelOS card and put the ArkOS card back in and it works just fine again.

Struggles with more demanding psp titles but 50% of the catalog is A-ok for me.
Doesn't play much saturn sadly.
Debloated it with Universal Android Debloater.
Found all emulators I need on APKpure with no sign in required. It just.....works.
Battery life is easily 3-5 hours of gaming depending on the system.

Incredibly BASED.
I really love these telescopic controllers, though the Kishi V1 feels a bit too bulky for me, and I'm not a fan of assymmetrical sticks for retro stuff, still a good controller though, and Android has come a long way with emulation. I hope we get some sort of bezelless, notchless 16:9 resolution phone at some point, though there doesn't seem to be a market for that, which is a shame since it would be perfect for this telescopic controller setup, at least for me.
Also hope we get a telescopic controller with the DualShock/DualSense layout, as they're all either assymmetrical, or have the Wii U layout with the analog sticks on top. I'm having the same sort of performance on my own old phone, PS2 is sort of a pain to run, Saturn is a struggle to emulate, but anything up to PS1 runs well, and PSP runs good for the most part. I'd say the main issues are the notch and the awful aspect ratios phones have, too much negative space.

This is eerily similar to my situation.
My sister gave me an old Stylo 6 last month and I've been wondering how to do anything with it. LG and T-Mobile really pozzed this thing up so even basic usage is sluggish, and even with an OEM unlock there's no custom ROMs for it. So learning about this Universal Debloater tool is a godsend, thank you for mentioning it.

Oh dude! UAD is dope. And it holds your hand too; there's taba for recommended, advanced, unsafe, etc. Then theres tabs for what software it pertaina to: all/oem/ google, etc. Like I legit took the fdroid pill and got rid of google play altogether on my main phone. Bought a cheap samsuns a03s, debloated it and now it never uses more than 60% of its ram for most things and the battery lasts me two days under heavy usage.

For debloating an old phone for gaming; its great because theres all the emulators in fdroid but APKpure actually has unlocked pro versions of standalone emulators too. I have to say, while the negative space is the main issue in these smartphone and controller setups, since you'll have something that's about 25cm in size with only a fraction of that being screen, it's not so bad when you stretch it a little... I know its something many absolutely despise doing, but it can help things look less awkward, getting rid of negative space with actual screen, even if it's not 1:1 with the original's resolution... also, another thing I do is use 3rd party applications to draw a sort of border on the screen that hides the notch for the selfie camera, so there are no holes in it, once again it works well enough, picture related is Sonic Advance running on my setup, stretched, but no hole interrupting the screen, and no sort of negative space to deal with. I think it doesn't look bad, and plays just fine.

Final conclusion, left to right, for the three under $10 famiclone handhelds I ended up buying (intentionally or not);

5/10 for the red one as it as generic and barebones as it gets with Chinese crap, 8/10 for the blue one as it's top of the line barebones Chinese crap but the best of the best for these devices short of ones like the Retromax but then you're tripling the price.
-1/10 for the brown shit one, my god everything about it is so fucking bad.
