Did Mortal Kombat 4 use real photos for the textures of the MK characters?

It was pretty common.

Oh I'm just wondering because the textures looked handpainted sometimes and maybe that's because the compression of limited machines.

Probably both
IIRC even for DKC they touched up the resulting sprites by hand a bit. They probably touched these up too a bit

Ehm, there's surprisingly little behind the scenes material when it comes to MK4. but I think we can all agree that the faces for Liu Kang and Sonya are clearly John Tsui and Kerri Hoskins, so I think its a pretty good assumption that they did make detailed face photographs which were then stitched into the textures.
I wonder if they used digital cameras..

There's really not enough information about MK4, I guess Kerri Hoskins standing still while they took multiple photographs of her face just wasn't as exciting as pics of them doing actual martial arts on a blue screen.

It would have been better if they used the same texturing technique that they used in War Gods.

Agreed, not sure what they did right with War Gods but the characters look much more real than MK4s characters.

How do you guys feel about MK4? I've noticed people have started warming up to the 3D era games in recent years but I still rarely see anyone talk about 4.

>> No.10236102

>>10236085
Eh, it was nice seeing them dump the techno MK era which was MK3. but in the end MK4 felt very clunky.
characters moved like they were on speed, the voice samples had become even goofier. the gameplay was shallow as fuck with a lot of people just throwing the weapons around.

It felt like going from Super SF2 to Ballz.

its actually authentic motion capture. they dropped real chinese people into wells hooked up with a mocap suit on for this fatality. the sad little arm frailing is authentic.
