I don't understand why people dislike Working Designs' rendering of the text in the games they localized. It's like all of the sensibilities of 1990s anime (whether you like them or not) translated directly to the video game format without any loss of what it felt like to watch your favorite anime. It's clear they deliberately picked the "right" games that worked to this sort of style too, but c'mon, this reads pretty goddamn well, and better than most modern game localizations for sure. Accuracy be damned, we need another Vic Ireland in vidya.

The only Working Designs localization I've played is Popful Mail and I thought it was pretty funny

They made weebtards seethe and cope for years, which is a major W in my book.

Yeah I always enjoyed their scripts. I prefer translations to be more faithful, but that doesn't mean I didn't have a good time with WD translations. They always made me want to talk to every NPC.

My experience with their translations hasn't been bad. My problem is when they change the difficulty of the games, often turning the enemies into damage sponges.

I like em, some of their gameplay changes for the games are more questionable in my opinion

I used to browse the forums on the old WD website back in 1998 or so. At the turn of the century, I noticed a big influx of faggots in the main users of the forums, lots of self-imposed political correctness, which was novel in the early Internet days. I never believed in a million years that this sort of thinking would take over the Internet and society at large, yet here we are.

Totally agree. Alundra wouldn't have been the same without characters like Bonaire, and a lot of the games they changed the difficulty of have patches now that restore the original gameplay.

They were madmen.

No, but really WD translations are a product of their time. The games bleed the 1990s.

I thought Lunar was funny when I played it in complete ignorance. I've yet to go back and play them in Japanese, but as an adjacent topic I find it very difficult to go back to FF5's localization after playing it in Japanese and knowing how much of the localization's dialogue is just made up quips. Knowing that just makes it feel disingenuous and takes all the fun out of it. Ignorance is bliss.

Working Designs localisations were usually so bad that SEGA of Europe redid the translation internally for the PAL market.

FFV didn't bother me. Tales of Phantasia was the notorious one.

I doubt that had anything to do with translation quality. WD was a tiny operation and likely couldn't or wouldn't publish in Europe. And Sega would have had to pay WD to use their translation in it's own game on top of wait for them to finish, which given WD's habit of delays made that untenable.

>> No.10222389

>>10222361
And yet they could've imitated their localization style. Sega abstained from doing so, giving Europeans a less tainted product.

if anything, it's cuz they fucked with the difficulty of certain games

it's still funny they "localized" parasol stars

Which games did they do that for?
