Which is the most 90's retro game?

>> No.10208285

OP here, maybe not the game itself, but when it comes to music, Sonic R is as 90's as it gets.

This. The 90s was too diverse and each new era had a different feeling from the last. I'd go as far to say the entire Sega Genesis library absolutely REEKS of early 90s energy.

You'll laugh, but I'd say Bubsy. It's not _good_, but it's very, very much a thing of its time. A Sonic knockoff mascot with attitude; shitty jump to 3D later; it was absolutely a game that could only be made in the '90s. Not that it should have been made though, but hey, they tried.

Comix Zone.
- extreme comix theme from the 90s
- gen x-er main character from the 90s
- grunge music from the 90s
- on the sega genesis, from when Sega was at their peak in the 90s

it's the 90s in one single Sega cartridge.

>>10208285
Sonic R is 90s but it's peak eurotrash 90s. Only way it could get more eurotrash would be if it had music by Rednex or E-rotic.

For sure. Almost picked Sonic 2 over TJ&Earl. So many great choices. Thought about DK Country for mid 90s(a great choice imo) but that Comix Zone grunge look and feel just fits. Late 90s was a bit tougher for me as I skipped that gen growing up but MGS has that feel for me.

No mention of Mortal Kombat eh. Martial arts and especially ninja obsession was still a very real thing in the 90s. Edginess was in, and MK was probably the most controversial game of the decade in that regard. Ninjas + shock value = pretty 90s.....I mean you also have little things, like Scorpion being pretty similar to Ghost Rider, a character popular in the edgy anti hero era of the 90s, and Kano's design being loosely inspired by Terminator, which T2 was a pretty big deal

I also thought it was weird MK wasn't immediately mentioned. Literally had a fucking blockbuster movie lol.

I would argue Midway arcade games in general pretty much defined that decade, at least in America. Over the top racing games with half naked ladies, gritty bloody fighting games, comical nerdy games like Rampage World Tour and Gauntlet Legends, and of course the staple sports games like NBA Jam and NFL Blitz. NBA Jam was so popular that Shaq would literally rent a cab for his hotel room for him and his buddies to play.

Twisted Metal, especially the original is so mid 90s that you might think it's someone trying to do a period piece. My favorite is the Cyburbia (sounds like an album name) level where you can run over boomers in lawn chairs sitting in their nicely manicured lawns. Very Gen X.

WipeOut is one of the most '1995' games that I can think of. Everything from the soundtrack (The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Orbital, New Order, etc) to the SGI produced pre-rendered cutscenes, Designer Republic art design and the tech that it was running on. The PS1 was still pretty new hardware.

Correction. I meant to say these 3D glasses were more of a thing. The Pulfrich 3D Glasses , with the one grey lens and one clear lens. Not polarizing. There are two examples from the 90's that used these glasses is the cartoon The Bots Master from 1993, which had 'laser time' segments that would use these glasses. Also, the NBC show Third Rock from the Sun used these glasses for its final episode. Which was 1996. Those red and blue glasses were still found in sticker books and other random kids things.

The first is the cartoon The Bots Master from 1993, which had 'laser time' segments that would use a lot of parallax animation effects to create a quasi-3D effect. The glasses were included with action figures for the show. Also, the NBC show Third Rock from the Sun used these glasses for its final episode. Which was 1996. The original need for Speed on the 3DO is a very 1994-ish game. Especially in the presentation and FVM cutscenes with the trash talking opponent named the x-man.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOgpX5Shi6U&t=484s

The early 90's 'multimedia' CD-ROM craze was all about live-action FMV and in some cases 2D animation. The earliest PC's with CD-ROM drives, and add-ons like the TurboGraphx 16 and the Mega/ Sega CD. The 3DO was all about live action FMV. But there was a big tonal shift to CG cutscenes from the PS1/ Sega Saturn era from 1995 -1996.

The early 90's 'multimedia' CD-ROM craze was all about live-action FMV (and in some cases 2D animation). EA was big on investing in live action FMV during the early 90's. Mostly for PC games, but that also spilled over onto the 3DO as well. Having video files stored on a CD was a selling point back then. But from 1995-1996 onward with the PS1 and Sega Saturn, there was a big shift to CG cutscenes.

Do we agree Teletext is a very 90''s thing? It was probably invented long before the 90's and still exists to this day, but I believe it's in the 90's where it was the most relevant. I remember it as being pretty much the "internet" of those who didn't have internet yet. You could check from TV guides to small reviews of the latest released video games.

It was the last truly optimistic era of America. The cold war finally ended after half a century, technological progress was booming at an incredible rate, the biggest political scandal was whether the president got his dick sucked or not, the economy was doing great, it was unironically the golden age of the country. Then 9/11 happened, and it's all been downhill from there.

ironic, sinve the 50s were better than the 90s in every way. the "optimism" from the 90s was fake and gay and I'm glad it's gone. Im glad people are actually becoming redpilled on how fucked the world is instead of living in a bubble like in the 90s. with ow without 9/11 america was going downhill since the 60s.

nope. wages haven't kept up with inflation since the 70s

>the biggest political scandal was whether the president got his dick sucked or not
just because you were a bluepilled cuck living in a bubble doesn't mean nothing happened in the 90s. the 90s like every decade since the 60s pushed politics further to the left, CA turned blue permanently, more feminism, rise of nigger culture, etc.

>The cold war finally ended after half a century

Depends what you mean.

Toejam & Earl and its sequel is very representative of that generic, funky, Nickelodeon-esque 90s feel people not living in the era think is best representative of it. You can extend this to weird and grossout elements with Earthworm Jim and Boogerman.

In the grimdark, edgy, rock and roll style you have games like Loaded/ReLoaded, Apochalypse, Doom and Twisted Metal.

Your late 90s/early 2000s style with WipeOut, Jetset Radio and various dreamcast stuff.

90s anime feel with Keio Flying Squadron 1 and 2 and various WorkingDesigns stuff

Myst and similar capture that 90s CGI, virtual world style. Donkey Kong Country as well could fall into this.

The 2kool4skool, radical cereal mascot niche is obviously reflected in Sonic, though stuff like Tony Hawk also fits in there. Various other snarky mascots of the era like Spyro and Gex are off shoots of this.

Earthbound captures the feel probably closest to being a kid in the 90s in the suburbs or like similar live action kids movies of the era in that kinda environment, plus kooky weirdness and even that 60s nostalgia of the 90s with its small Beatles and pop culture references

Obviously Pokemon as just representative of a collective cultural phenomenon everyone shared, though the actual in game world may be a mix of 70s, 80s and 90s suburban Japan.

Age of Empires and Civilization 2 capture that 90s Dad PC Game vibe. Flight sims also.

I would say there is no true single greatest representative of the decade.

I agree with some of this. The US plateaued in the 50's-90's is the why I like to think of it. The 50's is for sure the peak of the country. At least at the moment. Everything has been kind of a slow down hill though. The economy in the 90's was good if you were already rich or were investing in globo-homo because there was no real economic competition. China was was still America's toy makers and the former USSR was importing from the west Adidis track suits of all things. The gopnik became a meme. So if you were. in business already you were doing great. I don't think wages are necessarily the only thing to look at to judge an economy's health but yeah wages were stagnant and nothing Wall Street did could help that as much as the media would want you to believe. I look back kn the era fondly but not because of economic policy or anything like that. Just the people. The places. All of that is gone. We're not going to get that feeling back. It's one of those things that instead of wanting to run forward I should have just planted my heels and enjoyed the moment. In many ways it was kind of a frightening decade. We should have payed more attention to it. There's missed clues there about the kind of world we have today hidden in that decade. Some kind of (((unseen force))) driving us to our own end. In many ways video games were a remedy to that. Video Games until Gamergate were a white male thing. It was a safe space for men to be men. To conquer, to fight, to race and do all of those things we wanted to do. There's a reason they blamed shit like Columbine on violent video games and rock/metal. They don't want us to have a bastion like video gaming offered. It was very much an underground for us to escape to.

I wouldn't think about it too much. the damage was already done and all the laws that fucked America over minus the Patriot Act already existed in the 90s. the only differene between the 90s and now is the time it took for the effecrs to worsen. and 9/11 did nothing more than what was innevitably going to happen anyway. without 9/11 we would've been were we are now by the 2030s maybe, or maybe it could be even worse, as 9/11 united the nation for 10 years, so you'd have the woke shit even sooner.

>In many ways video games were a remedy to that.
it was, but the problem with games in general is that they drag on too long and to fully enjoy video games you'd have to be a "loser" and binge 100h into them. the 80s-00s had a shit ton of escapism fo us to escape from reality, but that came back to bite us in the ass as we were too busy enjoying our entertainment while the left was constantly gaining ground. in a way having our hobbies fucked over is a good snap back to reality that we should get more active and fight back.

I'll be honest. I don't want to go back anymore. I don't want to go back to being a bluepilled cuck living in a bubble. sure the world is shittier, but that's what would take to redpill people to fight back and build a better future. i'm not losing hope no matter how bad things get.

>They don't want us to have a bastion like video gaming offered.
It's true. vidya was the only thing that they still didn't control and they were scared of it. it's why the 1991-2007 golden period was so good. it was artistic experession completely independent from the control of the elites. Rock and Metal was pushed by these elites too as it was a way to push degeneracy like drugs and pre-martial sex.

The 90's were also the decade in which synthetic drugs were turned into something "cool", ideal to make you enjoy parties better and increase the number of days you could stay awake without sleeping. This mostly affected technoheads, so Americans/Canadians might nor relate with that.

Anyway, this is part of the lyrics of a popular song among technohead youth back in the day, so you can get an idea of the feel of the time:

"Hold it! I wanna talk about drugs.
Heroin?
No, not heroin
Speed?
No, not speed

Before trance you had techno, then house, before house you had disco, I'd say house music defined the rave scene around early-mid 80s. Grunge was more a rock scene, which is a whole other matter entirely. I'd say grunge is late 80s, meaning neither genre originated in the 90s. Technically grunge is just an umbrella term to define the rock scene at that time, specifically Seattle's if you want to get granular about it, and very loosely defined what a rock band looked and sounded like at that point in time. Not quite as rehearsed and theatrical as then-contemporary superstar acts like Van Halen, Metallica, or, I dunno, Nitro. The Mothers. Whatever.

If you want to talk about grunge as an advertising design concept that's another conversation entirely.

A lot of shit when it comes to decades bleeds into one another a little bit anyway, lots of shit in the early 90s was bleeding over from the 80s, just like the early 00s was mostly defined by shit lingering from the late 90s, etc.

This is what zoomers don't get. Because they don't understand the CD era, they don't know how something largely considered bad in music circles could still sell a lot of albums, but there are big demographics for anything and especially if it's aimed at younger kids like nu metal you can make lots of money. Grunge was commercialized around the early 90s, the house/rave scene avoided all that until grunge committed commercial suicide along with kurt and it stopped making money for record companies, aka the notable change in commercial tone during the mid 90s. The new thing was skate punk and other more listenable and marketable subgenres for the mall punks, candy groupies and other hanger-ons to consume instead. Bro the late 90s had Marilyn Manson the "antichrist superstar" causing mass panic among parents and the retards in Korn screaming about wanting to die cause bullies and wah wah whatever the fuck. Not to mention, the entire ethos of the grunge scene revolved around pessimism, drug abuse, and depression. 90s music was largely the era that darkness and angst reigned, especially compared to the 80s in which the mainstream rock was all about partying and good times shit.

Of course I mostly always listened to rock so that's where my perspective comes from, but all that stuff was indicative of the times and wasn't like underground, it was all mainstream shit. Sure, on the other hand you had happy pop shit but you always have that, that didn't change either.

I don't see how emo, screamo, etc was much different either. It was just the continued evolution of teen angst centric shit that at that point had been going on for a while. We had Korn, then Linkin Park, then 9/11 and then we had MCR and Fallout Boy, what's the difference tonally? I never understand the narrative that 9/11 changed culture or attitudes in pop culture. I didn't notice a significant shift in culture until like the 2010s when we entered the hellish times of.....well, modern culture.

Grunge came out of the Seattle music scene, with bands like the obvious Niravana being the front runner, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, Hole, Alice in Chains, etc. Grunge was an attempt by the record companies to group them all under one label, along with any other band that sounded like them. Grunge fell apart, because most of the bands were reluctant to use that title., including Nirvana. I would say that around the same time, 'Alternative' was coming into popularity through events like Lollapalooza. This is where groups like Nine Inch Nails, Tool and Marilyn Manson got big, Late 90's was the short lived rise of NuMetal with Limp Bizkit and Korn and whatever. But then there's also the east coast and west coast rap scene. With gansta rap becoming big at the time. Boy bands were big from mid 90's onwards. Brit pop became big in the later 90's for a while. It was almost like the 'anti-grunge movement' with Blur, Oasis, Spice Girls, etc. I was 18 years old in 1999 and listened to a lot of this stuff. I grew up in Canada with Much Music (RIP) . It's hard to categorize it all, because each 'portion' of the 90's had its' own music fads.

Grunge came out of the Seattle music scene of the late 80's, with bands like the obvious Niravana being the front runner, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, Hole, Alice in Chains, etc. It was an attempt by the record companies to group all the groups that had the 'Seattle sound' under one label, along with any other band that sounded like them. It all fell apart after most of the bands were reluctant to brand themselves as Grunge, including Nirvana. Pearl Jam didn't consider themselves to be in the same genre as Nirvana, for example.

Really? Marilyn Manson is how you measure the overall cultural attitude of an entire decade?

The 90s were a time of great optimism. The Wall had fallen, the Soviet Union was over and Western liberalism had triumphed. History ended, or so people thought. In the West the 90s were also a time of great economic growth. 9/11 and the internet ruined this and now we're doomed to live in decline until China will finally overtake us and we'll be degraded to a former Empire ruined by mass immigration and climate change.

I, for one, welcome our new Chink overlords.

america's downfall started in 1913. you were just too bluepilled and stupid to know that. 9/11 did nothing more than wake you up to that fact. everything, every law that doomed america minus the Patriot Act already existed in the 90s. the only difference between the 90s and now is the time it took for the effects to get worse.

You should be grateful you no longer live in a bubble and are able to see the truth. the "optimism" of the 90s was fake and gay and I'm glad it's over.

U wot mate? 90s/early 2000s was the truest era of PC gaming past the micros. The vast majority of pc gaming associated genres either dont exist anymore or are bastardized beyond recognition. PC is now primarily just a console alternative instead of feeling like its own unique platform of IPs and genres.

>Really? Marilyn Manson is how you measure the overall cultural attitude of an entire decade?
All I'm saying is, the 90s was the decade of angst ridden rock, which was a new thing rock hadn't been in the 80s or 70s which were much more celebratory and rock was associated not with brooding and moping but with partying and weekend warrior shit. It was a big cultural shift so it's hard for me to think of the 90s as the most optimistic era musically, as primarily a rock fan. I know everything doesn't revolve around that POV but rock was still a significant like, half of the mainstream music world.

Also regarding Manson, he was a pretty big deal. People love to talk about 9/11 come the 00s, but there was Columbine in the 90s, and the press Manson got because of that was gigantic since he was used as a scapegoat for it. The "Satanic Panic" of the 80s was still going strong in the 90s as well as the general witchhunt against violent media. See Mortal Kombat inspiring the rating system for video games.

The 90s was also a very edgy time, Spawn was the most popular superhero for a while so what does that tell you lmao. It was not a time about things that were saccharine and friendly. Hell, I totally forgot how much hatred Barney the Dinosaur inspired, people were edgy.

I mean economically it might have been good, idk cause I've never paid attention to such things. Also, it was a good time to be a kid, so I understand having positive memories with it, but in terms of the zeitgeist and pop culture, it was hardly like the era of sunshine and happiness.

Wat. Where you even alive in the 90's?
90's was a classic "heroin/opioid decade". A hangover from the 80's. Everything was a downer, everyone was ironic and detached, if you weren't then you were a "try-hard". Then 9/11 broke the malaise for the next decade until everything swung back into opioid-drenched irony again.

Society was already rotting by the 50's. I don't mean in the twitter lefty "everyone was a secret addict/gay/rapist" sense, I mean that society was already being subverted and the stage was being set for the societal upheaval that followed. The nice clean white picket fence image was just the façade.

You Americans are fucking retarded. Is American pop culture all you know? The optimism I'm talking about pertains to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union, the end of communism and the idea the entire world will achieve world peace through liberal democracy. This was a common view among the intelligentsia of the time. Barney the dinosaur and Marilyn fucking Manson don't have anything to do with that fucking retards. Read a book for once damn.

One of the main reasons why 'Grunge' fizzled out so quickly, was because most of the original 'grunge' bands existed before the term grunge was ever coined. The label Grunge may have been coined by a alt-rock magazine that covered the Seattle music scene, because most of the bands did have a 'dirty' sound to them that made them seem grungy. But then record labels like subpop picked up on it and started using to to classify all the Seattle bands under the same label. Kurt Cobain said multiple times in interviews that he never liked Nirvana being called grunge, as he felt that it stiffed the bands' creative output. he wanted Nivana to evolve in sound beyond basic guitars, drums and 3 chord progression. Pearl jam considered themselves to be more under the 'blues' sub genre. Alice in Chains didn't really like being called grunge. Grunge was one of the most self defeating sub genres of the 90's.
