At least he becomes an actual recurring character. Siegfried, meanwhile, is completely vestigial, and obviously had a bigger role planned before getting cut short. You fight him once in the Phantom Train, Ultros mentions him once, then you see him in the Cave of Figaro looting treasure, and finally... you see him in the Coliseum telling you about a supposed pretender, and you do indeed fight someone with his name if you bet certain items, but nothing comes of any of this.

For example, he might be disguised as Locke in one town, and if the players tried to talk to him thinking it was Locke, they’d only get rude, curt responses from him. After the player gets the real Locke, if they realize something is weird and come back to that pub and talk to the fake/disguised Locke, he would reveal his true self and join the party as Gogo. The pub he appeared at would change on a timer, though, and he’d also change which person he was disguised as. Tracking him down was very difficult.

He tries to eat the party and tentacle rape Terra, and gets pissed off that the party beats him up. So he obsessively follows them around plotting his revenge, at one point trying to ruin an opera out of spite (even if none of the party members were there), tries to eat/rape them or anyone who tags along with them a couple more times, then reevaluates his life choices after the world ends. Maybe it's some Jap honor thing

Look at his facial expression in the game, that's his whole purpose. Comedy relief. Without Ultros FF6 goes down from an 8 out of 10 to a 6.5 at most.

Apparently, Sakaguchi was opposed to Gilgamesh being in FFV since he was a joke, but test players liked him too much that he relented. Siegfried was definitely supposed to be FFVI's answer to Gilgamesh, but that got subverted by the octopus somewhere along the way, and there feels like an abandoned plotline as a result.

I always thought the imposter line was just him distancing himself from his old life, but the theory I heard was that the "Ziegfried" spelling error was supposed to be a clue.
