What is your favorite Might and Magic game?

>> No.10206170

Heroes 3 or Dark Messiah. I remember really liking Heroes 2 but I haven't played it since the 90s, so I don't know if it holds up compared to 3.

I suppose OP didn't mean HoMM.

Anyway, I never played MM 1-5, are they worth checking out?

I finally picked up HoMM3 the other day after years of interest. I've always wanted to play M&M too, so I'm monitoring to see which one I should play first.
If anyone wants to recommend which one and why, I'd appreciate that, too. I've only ever played Japanese "dungeon crawlers," and the only one I've beaten is Demon Gaze. I have decent tolerance for older and frustrating games, but I wouldn't mind something that strikes a balance between newer yet good and then working backwards if I like it.

The one you posted. I like the live action porn actor portraits, the 3D models of the sequels do nothing for me, they look ugly. To date MM6 is the only Might & Magic game I have ever played.

>> No.10207053

I've only ever beaten the sixth game. Got super frustrating near the end until I got the blasters

I grew up getting destroyed by two but I played through 6 and 7 recently and 6 is my favorite. Love the pace of the encounters and the exploration in addition to the portraits and fun enemy designs

Best order to enjoy the story is release order

• MM1-5: not necessary. There is a very tiny reference to MM3 ending in the game of MM7
• HoMM1: not necessary. Very little stroy. Gameplay didn't age well.
• HoMM2: More story. Gameplay aged quite well. But not strictly necessary.
• HoMM2 Price of Loyalty. Story not related, just 4 small campaigns.
• MM6
• HoMM3 Restoration of Erathia
• MM7
• HoMM3 Armageddon's Blade (This in particular should be played after MM7; it has quite a few references that I didn't get when I played it first). Not all other mini campaigns in AB expansion are importnant, though some, like the story of Gelu, do play important role later.
• MM8: story not particularly related.
• HoMM 3: Shadow of Death.
• Chronicles
• HoMM4
• MM9: story not particularly related

HoMM5 onwards: reboot.

If you want to play just the MM6 engine games and HoMM 3 I suggest you go: MM6, Restoration of Erathia, MM7, Armageddon's Blade, MM8, Shadow of Death.

Only the first two Might and Magic games truly feel ancient, but even these can be somewhat improved with the "Where Are We" automapping tool.

Lol, those are the main story and everything Enroth is just spinoffs and afterthoughts

you should give 7 a go. its slightly worse in comparison (smaller) but is very similar in nature so you will like it. also has the porn actors.

>>10207879 is right though. MM6, MM7 and Heroes 3 are the best entries.
Just because the older stuff is older you want to say it’s the ones to play? Pointless unless you want to do a full play through and the oldest aren’t actually as good.

Personally I rank 4-5 above 6-7 (and especially think 6+ took a huge step back aesthetically and lack a common arc like 1-5), but they're different enough that I think it's at least worth trying one of each formula.

Entire series is pretty good though, except for some shitty spinoffs like Crusaders and post-5 HoMM games.

Today I learned that HoMM1 has a czech fanmod, The Equinox
notably it changes castle balance, for example cathedral now costs 6 crystal while warlock tower costs 30 sulfur and 32k gold, I found that funny

Back when I was first getting into the series, I played extensively in this order 3>8>7>6, and somewhere was 9.
3, and the Xeen games are fairly simple to understand, so long as you're willing to retreat from battle occasionally and can stomach when the game gets cryptic.
6, 7 and 8 are all easy to understand, but starting off it's very difficult. 6 & 7 have it much worse than 8. Hence why 8 is probably best for starting off, even if it's considered the worst of the three games.
All three each have their own unique and interesting setting. 6 offers more freedom in character design, while 8 changes the gameplay formula slightly in that you only create one character and find the rest. If you're lucky, you can end up with much better characters than you should at an earlier time.
9 is okay, but it's practically a beta and not in the sense that usually means with games. It's not buggy as much as blatantly unfinished.
1 & 2 are both Wizardry-style games, and while they're good according to the people who've played them, they're not really similar to the other entries in the series.

I really enjoyed 3, but I haven't been able to get into any of the others I've tried. I might give 4 and 5 another chance at some point without combining them to see if that improves the experience.

I started with 3 when a friend lent me his disks and loved it. Years later I bought the MM Collection with 1-5 and started 4 as stand-alone. Tbf, 4 is so short, I wonder how it was received at the time while people were waiting for 5.

Thanks, guys. I think I'm going to go with 6 since I'm playing HoMM3 - plus, I'm a huge faggot who's actually buying these on GoG and 6 is in a pack with all of the previous games, so I'll have some others to try if I feel it necessary. 6 is the one I've seen posted the most, too, looking at the UI so that must mean something.

Worlds of Xeen for sure. Not the hardest game or anything, but it's fun to run different party comps and the game as a whole is pure SOVL.

V is a good game, its just a game made by autists who did nothing with their lives prior to that point besides play HoMM games
