The first time I saw the rain in MGS2 I almost thought it looked better than real life lmao

I think people who didn't experience it back then can't really picture what this experience was back in 2001. It made the PS2 look like something that came from 2090. It was one of those defining moments in the turn of the millennium that made me feel "future is here"

I love rain in racing simulators and football/soccer simulators when there's a setting for it, it just makes things more cozy and more epic at the same time, you know? It also adds to the challenge as things become slippery and you have to be careful, while also going for a win.

Also, I don't know what it is in particular but the distance fog in many n64-era games gives off the same feeling of comfiness that I get from rain.

Games such as Shadows of the Empire make me feel like there's always a certain haze around you, like on a cold morning in late summer or early autum.

That has always bugged me greatly about bethengine games, they don't maintain weather well through zone changes, and even with mods they often break. There are some cool mods that try to let you hear rain sounds while indoors, or show it through windows etc, but they still have to exert a lot of effort to prevent the engine from just randomizing the weather every time you touch a door.

Swamp levels in Jedi Outcast weren’t the best, but the way the rain evaporated as it hit your saber was really cool. And at that point in the game, you had force pull 3 so you could do the ol’ jump and pull and yoink the swamp troopers out of their hiding places and the fall damage would kill them

The rain levels in Test Drive III: The Passion bring me major nostalgia to the early 90's. Driving a hot car on the countryside was already comfy (despite the shitty physics modelling of the time), and a cool summer's rain with the windshield wipers activating somehow just added to that. It was also my first encounter with rain effects in a video game, and first encounter in general with somewhat realistic driving. Maximum comfort.

Thief 2 has a couple of rain levels, most notably the one that starts from the lighthouse, where you attempt to infiltrate the Mechanist submarine (forgot the name). It doesn't really add much to the gameplay, because you'll move to indoors sections of the mission pretty quickly anyway. But it's there.
