I started Xanadu Next (2005) with the fan translation patch. The art style is comfy. But having to buy the dungeon keys seem stupid to me. Anyone else feels the same way?

I played it when it came out and bought the translation on steam. You have to remember it's a very modern installment of a VERY old series. That explains why it does some annoying/antiquated things.

Awesome game, though. Back when Falcom made kickass games instead of the dollar store generic anime filth now.

I liked this game a lot and was pleasantly surprised by it. I didn't mind the keys.

Yeah I saw some gameplay from the first Xanadu game and it's from the 80s. Pretty ancient, but it had some sick low color pallete count art.
>Back when Falcom made kickass games instead of the dollar store generic anime filth now.
Which are their best games anon? From their catalog of games, Zwei!! and Gurumin are the other ones that looks interesting to me. Maybe even Ys Origin.
Someone I play and talk games with tried to get me into The legend of heroes Trails in the sky but the plot's style-progression filtered me. I remember playing up until trying to capture some sky pirates but that was it. I dropped it immediately after.

Maybe I regard "just buy the keys and sell me bones for making them bro" as something silly because I'm also playing old MS-DOS shooters where finding the keys to progress was something core in the game's level design.

Could this game be played with gamepad? I'm considering starting a playthrough on the Steam Deck.

>> No.10199798

Why play the fan translation instead of the official release when it has improvements? Not telling you to buy it obviously, easy enough to pirate.

Yes. I didn't try it but you can. There's a Steam rerelease so that might be of your interest since that's the oficial translation, the game released in Japan only originally.
Friendly reminder that I'm playing the original JP release with the fan translation patch. I'm also running it with Wine but the intro videos don't work, I'm still trying to figure that out. If it helps you or anyone else I'm using wine-8.13 (Staging) with custom wine build Wine-GE-Proton8-13.

4 reasons, because
- I don't like steam so much anymore.
- I'm saving money (I got a verified copy from the redump project).
- Learning to run windows apps in linux is something I enjoy doing. I'm trying to run more "complex games". And since this needed you to patch files and needed to have the Japanese locale enabled, it seemed like a fun challenge.
- I wouldn't run any cracks (potential malware) on my computer without containing it inside a virtual machine. I haven't checked into qemu vms yet. That's why I didn't get a cracked version of it.

Fair enough. There is a gog version though which wouldn't need to be cracked.

True, but how do I know if the executable hasn't been tampered with, that it's the real gog release? Is there something like a database for gog hashes? There have been cases of so called gog reuploads that were tampered with. With redump dumps you can just calculate the hash for each CD track and verify them.

This game is one of my favorite all time simple comfy adventure rpgs . It gives off crazy kings field/demons souls vibes almost to the point where I wonder if they share team members. Pisses me off this series turned into fucking high-school anime trash, Trying to ape off personas success probably. Japan doesn't care about traditional fantasy settings anymore

I played through this couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Gameplay is different but the environments and atmosphere reminded me of Ehrgeiz' Quest Mode if anyone played that.

Going to start his one today. Tried it briefly on the Deck and it seems to play great.

What's the strategy game with the blue-ish UI?

>> No.10203512

Finally started the game, played until I reached the Eternal Maze right after fucking up some lava gecko.
I'm having a lot of fun and so far the only thing that I don't dig is the damage calculation, as you can deal 1 point of damage to an enemy the moment you are a bit underleveled, which reminds me of Terranigma in a bad way.
Aside from that, pretty cool game, and I agree with >>10200127 in that it has some King's Field vibes to it.

I don't remember why I decided to pick this up last year, but damn, it was exactly what I wanted. It's the first game I actually paid for on GoG since it conveniently went on sale halfway through me playing it.
I love that sixth gen/mid 2000s budget PC title aesthetic. Coming out of some new shortcut back to the town was satisfying. I don't remember annoyed by keys. I love systems like the weapon skills and learning them by use, but despite the amount of them I didn't use very many at all. Since equipment was a linear progression, it didn't seem like there was much opportunity for replay variety, but maybe if I gave it another go I'd notice more than last time. It's been like year since I played it, after all.

>I started Xanadu Next (2005) with the fan translation patch.

The game has a PC release. Why not just buy it? It's often like 1 dollar.

It's a cute game and holy hell it should have gotten a PS2 release, and gotten proper sequels. I think this the future that Xanadu should have gone in. Falcom went way too anime after this.
