you need the zen scroll to be able to change to sage class.
you need a warrior,arch priest,and lastly a merchant that's the most balanced party.
after that you can change class in case you need,a jester can be only put if you are high level or did a class change due to the benefit of jester not requiring the zen scroll to change to sage.

Merchant is great pre-class change because they level up fast and have high HP. A merchant turned into a sage helps all alleviate the sage's weakest stat (HP) and is much more interesting than the old boring "let's turn a wizard into a sage"

I honestly really hate the concept of a separate "Hero" class in RPGs.
I'll admit the mid DQ games do some cool shit, but that really takes me out of it. It's just too self inserty "I can do everything" power fantasy, I prefer when you actually have to choose a spec. Pissed me off when the Etrian Odyssey series larped and added a "Hero" class as well, it's like bitch if you want a glorified swordsman just make a swordsman. Multiclass into magic if you want but I hate this weirdass pigeonhole class.

At the very least, I prefer the old MUD/BBS door game concept of "Hero" being a class you potentially unlock after playing all the way to level cap in another 1 or 2 classes. At least then it takes some effort to unlock.

I'm pretty sure they went with that in DQ3 to make sure players wouldn't fuck themselves over and any party would be viable, since the hero can do a bit of everything. DQ, and 3 in particular, was just more casual-oriented, I think they just didn't trust players enough unlike FF1, which came out at around the same time but which wasn't nearly as popular.

Female characters are a little stronger because they can wear some extra equipment, including the best armors. That doesn't mean you must make a party only with girls (the game is not that hard), but having some in your party will still be helpful.

sage is a meme because its better to learn spells asap then it is to have the other perks of sage. its a good retirement plan once you've learned every spell of your tree but unless you're doing the post game stuff the remakes added you're probably not getting to level 40+ anyway

fighter is the best melee class (especially in the remakes where they gave them a ton of gear) but they have a slow starting level curve. merchant/thief level up faster then anyone and because of this they tend to have better stats then a warrior while having the same gear for merchant or whips to aoe people to death with thief so you wanna start out as those and then swap to fighter and stay there so you have a good foundation and get really good crits.
