Why were there so few JRPGs for the Sega Genesis? It got a couple of computer RPGs ported over because of how similar the architecture was to the Amiga, but was the Genesis really that niche in Japan? In some ways it's a much better system for RPGs than the SNES because the higher resolution allows for more lines of legible text on screen.

RPGs in Japan were for the "normie gamer". The Megadrive in Japan wasn't for "normie gamers", it was for people who were either poorfags or who wanted to play lone wolf hardcore gamer.

SNES can instantly switch resolution to 512x224 for readable kanjis.

Why would you make a cinematic game for a console with poorer graphics than the competition? Especially when it's DOA in the region where all those games are made.

The Genesis's hardware is better utilized in action games that can use a fast CPU.

The drive for RPGs known as the Mega RPG Project was split with Mega CD. To make things worse the SEGA-FALCOM partnership barely produced anything. Theres your answer

The Super Famicom was dominating hard in Japan and the Mega Drive was the worst selling console, selling less than the PC Engine

Genesis/Mega Drive was a flop in Japan because people didn't want to "bring the arcade home" which is was the console emphasized.

They live in walkable cities and preferred to play the latest and greatest for a single coin while socializing instead of having increasingly downgraded versions at home and alone.

Without an install base, there was no reason for Japanese companies to make Japanese dungeons and dragons games. source: my ass

The sour grapes between Sega of Japan and Sega of America in the 90s is really in a lot more perspective after understanding that. Sega of Japan made the hardware and couldn't do jack shit to sell it, and then along comes these hot shots in the American office who are able to constantly embarass Nintendo, something Sega of Japan couldn't even dream of.

SEGAs success in North America mostly comes down to NEC America doing everything possible wrong.
Not to mention Europe, where the PC Engine due to being mastersystem levels cheap had a potential market but, they just didn't give a shit about EU.

I found that at goodwill for $4. I tried to put it in my genesis, but it wouldn't fit in even with a bit of force. I know ot said mega drive on the side, but it looked like it should had worked with any model Genesis. My original post >>7963559

You mean listening Johnny Turbo whine about how nobody gives the Turbo CD credit for coming out first wasn't a good marketing campaign?

That actually makes a lot of sense and explains why Megadrive was so popular in Europe. The arcade scene had nowhere near the dimension that it had in Japan and kids mostly bought it because gameplay mostly resembled whay they played at machines. I suspect if SNK wasn't so prohibitive, it would have been massive hit too.

You could be playing Beggar Prince right now on your Genesis instead of making this thread.

The plastic on your pin connector in your system might be damaged. Take a look in the cart door with a flashlight and see if there's any deformed or dinged plastic. You might be able to shave it into the right shape with an exacto blade.

Pier Solar is a great game and you were super lucky to find it at such a good price. I actually say it's one of the best games for the console.

This is pretty much it. Hence why it was mostly SEGA that supported it with a few Japanese scraps then a ton of western games. You weren't going to get many 3rd party JRPGs on the console. Phantasy Star IV was pretty good. PSII had a memorable setting. Shining series had a cool cast. In the end the JRPG library didn't hit the highs the Super Famicom did.

Every genre can use a fast CPU. But finding something to do with extra CPU cycles in a JRPG requires a bit of design innovation, and innovation is contrary to the JRPG genre.

Opinion disregarded. All cities are walkable cities, there are no cities were a man can't walk. This is a buzzword that controllers implanted into their Western brains so they can annoy humans with this type of midwit analysis about why the Mega Drive "failed".
