Post the most obscure game you have played which you would legitimately include in your Top 10 games of all time. Maybe explain why you think its so good. I want to make a list of weird good shit to play.

Well, Moon would definitively be one. What an experience that was. It's actually not that obtuse to get to lv29 Love at least, you could easily do most of the game without a guide, but there's definitively a bunch of it that expect a little too much fucking around from the player on top of prior requirements. And god, the OST. I discovered The Sleepwalk from it (Warp Wet Woods) and then immediately got disappointed that was it, there's absolutely no other shoegaze band like it that's as noise and random as that one. I actually went and bothered getting 100%, even the extremely painful fishing contest
However the ending fucking sucks holy shit
Did you post it with a Moon picture because you wanted something similar? I don't know anything similar, but check stuff that are, uh, "Earthbound and Yume Nikki" adjacent and you might enjoy those. A recent one is Everhood (but that's not retro)

For top 10 I can't go more obscure.

It's just a very well written game with a time travelling story that pulls you in immediately. Super early ps2 charm also doesn't hurt. And oddly enough its like a proto-walking sim of today, you walk around and interact with people and story plays onward, very little to no actual gameplay.

Ah, yes, I missed the obvious, but I haven't played any of the rest. IIRC LOL has very little text or something? And apparently Onion Games are currently talking about possibly porting Chulips.
Otherwise they spun off and formed several companies and made stuff similar

Skip_Ltd.:
Giftpia (still untranslated?), Chibi Robo series, Captain Rainbow (Last I've seen, the translation was finally applied but there were a bunch of missing lines. Is this fixed by now?)

Vanpool
I've heard that both Tingle games are pretty similar

And of course, Chulips from Punchline

I like this game for it's solid gameplay, great art direction and otherwordly, borderline unfitting music, plus it's an interesting piece of trivia: it's one of the few Japanese games with a woman director, I can't think of any others.

>>10184589
Speaking of Lovedelic, I would also actually put Chulip in my top 10, even if I recognize it is a shite game, but it's absolutely commendable in everything it does, wandering that awesome line between batshit insane, stupid and thoughtful, plus it's got that 60s Japan charm. But I always end up putting either of the Tingle games cuz they have a similar charm and are basically Nintendo-endorsed Mad Magazine fever dreams, and the first one is actually a cool YS clone in a way. Out of the Lovedelic games, I think either those or LKS are the best ones in the pure gameplay department.

This is obscure primarily due to the platform it released on (yes, it came out on windows, nobody fucking noticed).

The story in the game always struck me as an incredibly bittersweet or even downright depressing. While the pitch was that you were the lone hero against all odds, the game made it much more that your character was swept up in events, no more a master of his own destiny than anybody else.

Or maybe it was just the zel-os storyline.

Dunno.

Game was complicated enough to be fun, simple enough gameplay wise to not require too much investment to get decent, while not as big as other games in the series, or even similar games always made it feel a lot more complete to me.

experimental genre bending to the max - a jrpg that isn't bogged down by turn based random encounters and bloated leveling/item management systems, a zeldalike with quality storytelling, 1vs1 battles with all the flair of a fighting game but without autisticly complex mechanics and tastefully reserved for punctuating climatic moments instead of constantly having to whack monsters en mass all the way through, a platformer enriched by everything else I previously mentioned

clever high concept storytelling within a unique setting, a brilliant narrative device only possible through the videogame medium and a twist that goes over most heads of the few people who played it

great spritework combined with tridimensional environments blends the best of both the 2d and 3d realms

all that said it's still heavily flawed and full of jank. I recommend the liberal use of savestates to anyone willing to play it

If you like atmospheric PS1 games, Meremanoid is up there. Not sure I could call it a top 10 when I've played so many great games, but it left a strong impression on me and I listen to soundtrack all the time. It's a solid PS1 JRPG that takes place entirely underwater, all your party members are mermaids.

One that probably would actually fit in my top 10 is Napple Tale. I'm really surprised I never see it mentioned on this board. If you like the mood of stuff like Klonoa I recommend you check it out. It also has a soundtrack by Yoko Kanno. Another is Bunny Must Die/Chelsea & the Seven Devils, an indie metroidvania that's very challenging, very cute and has a Third Strike parry.

Lately I've been playing Ephemeral Fantasia and it's definitely got strong flaws but as somebody who enjoys both Majora's Mask and JRPGs it's scratching an itch and I love the way the game looks. I think I'm just a real sucker for weird/ambitious games.

Geneforge.
Hands down in my top 5. It's story is well written and actually non linear. You actually shape the story with your actions, and this fluctuates the whole game. making it great for replays. It's unique. It's not your average RPG structure with generic classes. It's concise, you have a guardian, an agent And a shaper, which are similar to warrior, ranger, sorcerer, but are designed to fit in this world. A completely unique world that I haven't seen done anywhere else, at least not in this way. I'm not going to spoil it, I encourage everyone to go check it out. The gameplay is turn based kind of like fallout with action points, it's not walk in the park you can easily getted raped up the butt later in the game, hell even early in the game if you wander in the wrong areas. Its well worth it if you're looking for great moral dilemma situations that can get really interesting or if you just want a nice twist on the normal crpg formula.

Fuck it because I'm never going to have an opportunity to talk about this game.

I discovered this game a few months back and it's just baffled me since then, beside some random blogposts talking about it there's really not much much on this game online. I don't know how else to describe it but it feels like a shitty old creepypasta or horror greentext that somehow was an actual game. It's a surreal horror themed adventure game, it feels inspired by Myst more then anything really. The story is rather surreal, the actual "premise" kind of gives the impression that the game is more on the silly side but it goes into some pretty heavy mindfuck material as it progresses. The mix of hideously outdated CGI, a stiff and kind of awkward script, and almost complete lack of music for pure ambiance makes it feel like nothing else I played. The fact this was localized also just blows my mind, why the fuck did Jaleco decide this text heavy game in a dead genre by a literal who dev team that no one remembers was worth investing in? I don't know if I would put it in my all time favorites but it definitely feels like the weirdest game I've discovered in years.

Neo Turf Masters

I imagine most people don't care just reading this, it's just a stupid golf game. Well for what it's worth it's made by NAZCA, the original team behind Metal Slug before they were absorbed into SNK. The game is what I would call a perfect game or anything that nears that definition. Great physics that are easy to understand and never really seem unfair, there's a fair amount of depth to them still, the music and graphics are amazing, the fucking jingles are like audio cocaine, I don't like to use the word comfy, but it really is. And I don't really care about golf at all.

My only real problem with the game is the lack of balance in the roster. If you're a normal person you'll only want to pick the german guy, there's no real reason to pick anyone else, he just has flat out the best stats. But if you're a masochist the best character is the brazilian because he has the strongest drive, it's just you need to sell your soul to satan to be able to control him.

It’s a shame, because Chibi-Robo, for example, is a great game (when you look past “chores” which are not that big part of the gameplay). I like Moon a lot but for me Chulip edges it out. Its extremely similar gameplay wise and is made by a lot of the same people but it has an extra charm to it that edges it out for me. Another great game by the same people is LOL on Dreamcast, it's really short too only about 3 hours so you can knock it out quickly but its super unique and tells its story without any dialogue which I thought was cool.

Theres a number of obscure games I really love but wouldn't consider a top 10, Planet Dob for PS1 is amazing(unironically just smoke some weed and enjoy) its Japanese only but somehow I don't think the dialogue would make it make any more sense you can beat it by just fumbling around and talking to everyone its an amazing audiovisual experience. Osamu Satos 90s PC games are really bizarre and interesting would recommend. Paranoiascape for PS1 is an interesting experience, not a very good pinball game but you get infinite continues so it isnt too bad its worth sitting through for the visuals. 3DO has a number of truly insane games, Cyberdillo and Immercenary in particular come to mind.

If anyone knows other weird obscure games like these, please share with me. I feel like I've already found and played everything like this.

I think cool japanese indie games kind of fell out of most people's interest as gaming became more popular and more and more indie games were being made. Back then there was a lot more enthusiasm around finding and playing obscure cool japanese shit. These kinds of games are still being made but they're hidden under extreme amounts of crap, whether low effort trend chasing western indies or just incredibly amounts of garbage eroge (see: dlsite).

I see the Rockin Android version disappeared from Steam, but the original doujin release is still my favorite. Though I have yet to try the Switch version, not sure how different that is but it's on my backlog.

La Mulana is kinda infamous but very niche so I'll mention it here. It leaves everything for the player to figure out. Every time you think you've made a lot of progress the game just expands further. It has beautiful graphics and music. It maintains a high level of difficulty with both its action and puzzles all the way through to the end of the game. It has extremely memorable areas, puzzles, and concepts. I recommend this game to anyone who likes action and puzzles.

Based. SF2010 is a fantastic game because it plays NOTHING like other action games. Everything from its structure, the stage design, the enemy patterns, the characters moves, etc

you know how so many action games have gamepaly that is always just about the same with super small varations? Like you see a boss pattern you just know how to defeat it because you've seen it a hundred times? SF2010 is the polar opposite of that, and the amazing thing is that it remains unique TO THIS DAY. Playing SF2010 actually highlights how unimaginative and derivative most action games are.

Compared to the Megaman collections color blur filter that's absolutely horrible, on by default, I can't fucking believe fuckers out there are playing with this shit on and that these collections are shipped with this options... I actually wouldn't mind plot changes, the game deserves an update, as everyone that played the game points out the epilogue is the weakest part of the story, unfortunately both the writer and the composer died very young. This "remaster" is just a cashgrab.

I don't think that. But it's hard to have a "lesser known" game today. In the 90's or early 2000's, sure, but today we have access to any game released. I doubt you'll be able to find a game (from any console or era) that doesn't have a long play in youtube.

I have most of my progress written down as notes, but lost a lot of progress to a savegame failure years ago and still haven't reclaimed everything I had found and not yet written down from that save file. Guy I know has beaten it with guides and basically told me you'll never figure it out alone, but I don't want to play it with someone who just feeds me answers either. Sometimes I wish for a game with a solid core play mechanic that is heavy on exploration but which reinvents itself each time you play, so that people could play together and share the same world but not get spoiled by people online. I guess like a randomizer, just one that changed even more things, like enemy behavior and strength/weaknesses, dungeon rooms and layouts, etc.

Your friend is right, the game is absolutely unbeatable without a guide, but you shouldn't be ashamed to do it with the clues. I rarely see the shock/gore brought up, there's only a handful of really disturbing scenes in it. The only reason those scenes even work is because the disturbing scenes are placed strategically around all the more normal JRPG moments.

The story is excellent, it's spread out over three different scenarios and revolves around Ken and his slightly psycho tomboy GF Linda having to collect enough animals on the planet of Neo-Kenya to be able to launch a space ark. The characters are very likeable, and the NPC conversations and worldbuilding are some of my favorite.

The game is very fun, you run around catching animals and turning them into weapons, armor, and meats or uploading them into the ark, so that you can catch more animals and do it all over again. It also has a unique four-directional turn-based combat system and you can inherit beast moves and transformations from animals you put in the ark. You also have autonomous dog party members you can switch in and out.

It also has seasons and years which pass and change which animals you can encounter and which NPCs you can talk to.

There is so much more to the game than a few shocking moments, although it's true that I've never seen a boss fight more shocking than the Scenario A true boss.

My friend is just like this. He is a complete cunt. He goes to all the lgbt and pride rallies, all the black pride shit. If a movie stars a minority/female/trans then it’s one of the best films ever. If one of our black or female friends make a shitty not funny joke, he’ll make sure they know that he laughs about it for days and it’ll be topic of conversation for days after. He’s that kind of prick.
He HATES mario games as he says it’s a typical male fantasy shit about women that needs saving and only stars white people, yet he bought several copies of Mario 3d all stars and has a ‘Mario shelf’ to prove that he’s such a gamer and into nerd culture. He says he hates Mario but galaxy is a great game, not that he’s played it but because our female friend likes it.

The beginning part is a bit tricky especially because I'm not sure exactly what triggers the appearance of the first encounter with a monster, which is what you need to raise your Love points and stamina early on. Just focus on exploring as much as you can while making sure you have enough stamina to get back home at the start. If you show your collected items to Yoshida (the bird in town) he will give you hints on what you're supposed to use them for. Eventually you will get so high leveled that stamina will become a non-issue and then you can work on some of the game's more obtuse puzzles

Agree with this, the only limit in Moon is time management, but Chulip is a game that requires WAY too much trial and error and somehow despite moving from PS to PS2, the puzzles are mostly either a fetch quest, waiting for someone to be kissable, or timing.

Moon had way better puzzles like the monkey island rhythm game, using different songs to lure out animals, or following people's schedules on certain days.

Where's a good place to grab YU-NO? I've been meaning to play it and love time travel games, but it's on 20 different systems and I agree that I'd prefer to play the old version.

top comment at the bottom of https://www.myabandonware.com/game/yu-no-kono-yo-no-hate-de-koi-o-utau-shojo-cp1 has a link to a dude's prepatched version with the latest patch. Just tested it on an emulator and it works fine.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as "obscure" but it's definitely one of the few GBC games I always revisit. No tie-in game has a right to be this soulful. The rest of the Hamtaro games are also very, very good.

Love this game. First saw it recommended here years ago and now both 5th gen systems have fantranslations. Top tier atmosphere and a great soundtrack.

When I saw this same thread on /v/ a month ago people posted way more obscure and older games. I thought /vr/ was supposed to be cool

Corpse Party for PC-98
It's a simple top-down horror made in RPG Maker, the 1st version of the software I believe, but it has an atmospheric OST, interesting setting and concepts, and it's fun to play, also has a variety of creepy endings. I love it.
