Sure, that's probably the most annoying level in the entire classic series but other than that 1 beats the shit out of 2. Marble Zone isn't worse than the (plenty of) shitty zones in 2 and their trappy level design.

The one thing I like about Sonic 1 is that it doesn't peak near the beginning of the game. Sonic 2's best stages are probably Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin, and Casino Night Zone depending on who you talk to. Sonic 1 saves Spring Yard and Star Light Zone for later in the game. CD also does this with Stardust Speedway and it works great because it gives you some incentive to keep playing towards the end. Plus it has a great ending theme and FMV

It's kind of a contrarian thing. US fans have always called S3&K the best one, so people who were sick of hearing that and wanted to be different started to praise Sonic CD a lot. But then CD became more widely available in the west through Gems Collection/digital ports and its flaws were more heavily scrutinized. Most fans are willing to agree that the first game isn't that great, so 2 is what you have left.

I pretty much just turn my game off every time I get to hill top zone cause there’s nothing to look forward to. Oil ocean is a cool level but metropolis zone is right after and those levels are not fun

1 is a good game overall just not the best genesis sonic game
2 is solid all around but blows its load early with all the best stuff being in the first half
3 & Knuckles is excellent and I really cant find many flaws that dont apply to all the other games as well. Thats just my opinion though.
CD has great art/music/atmosphere and is great for a playthrough, though fuck actually finding all the time kidney stones and the robot machines, its a bitch navigating some of those levels but theres a whole lotta eye candy and good music.

Sonic 2 is really overrated, still better than 1 but it was a ton of people's first game as a pack in so there is a lot of that going on. The rushed development is very apparent in the last half of the game.

I dislike the bonus stages in 1-3 as a whole. The remaster did make the half pipe better with it being 3D rendered with a larger draw distances so you can actually see what's coming up. Blue Spheres is just tedious and you need to do it way too often when playing as S3&K I really just don't like it.

I'd argue Metropolis zone is almost up there, at least labryrinth zone is over quick especially if you know some shortcuts. Metropolis zone has some of the worst enemy placement if not the worst in the entire trilogy.

Sonic 2 was a rushed game, ya know. Lots of cut content (wood zone, hidden palace zone, genocide city zone, death egg zone) Still turned out pretty good.

You don't have to actually find the capsules and projectors if you just go for the Time Stones. Sometimes it is hard to find 50 rings though, especially in the first few stages

As the story goes, it was originally meant to be a SEGA CD game before the project was split in two. Stuff like Wood Zone and Rock Zone would've been basically the equivalent of Emerald Hill Zone Past and Metropolis Zone Past. I also remember reading somewhere that Hidden Palace Zone was supposed to be a cutscene where Sonic turns Super, kind of like in Sonic 3K.

I like 2 but my biggest issue with it is the difficulty curve. The game is an absolute snore fest for 2/3 of it it's not until Mystic Cave when the levels put up somewhat of a challenge beyond holding right and the occasional gimmick.

I don't get it either. honestly, it's worse than 1. 1 is a cool platformer. CD is still underrated seeing as everyone is a 2fag. 2 has...nothing going for it whatsoever.

I wouldn't go that far. Spindash is still a nice alternative to the peelout, Sonic and Tails mode is fun especially with co-op, still has some solid tracks for a cartridge game.
