So are these games any good or what. I never hear anyone on /v/ reminisce about it, no memorable ost, characters, memes or even waifus. Someone give me the run down. It looks interesting

Unfortunately since the singleplayer series was never continued past the genesis and the current fanbase is populated with the MMO fans there's rarely threads about these classics on /v/. There's many elements of those games that makes this part of the series very memorable, but for me, it's the characters, the soundtracks, and the sci-fi elements that do it for me. There's great waifus in all of the Phantasy Star games, and great soundtracks too (Phantasy Star 3 has some bad tracks but also some great ones). I would say play all of them, even 3, and to also play the Phantasy Star Text Adventures after completing 2. If you end up enjoying all of those, the Game Gear games are also worth looking at.

Theirs Phantasy Star threads here all the time. There all good. You might get filtered by 2 and 3 if you can’t handle retro rpg QoL. PSO Blue Burst, Portable 2, Zero, PSO2 (ep 1-3, 6) are addicting and some of my favorites from the MMO games.

Rika, Mieu, and Nei are best girls from Classic games.
Elenor, Rupika, Risa, and Emilia are best girls from PSO games.

Phantasy Star I is solid. Phantasy Star II is a hard one to swallow but has a very alluring setting. Phantasy Star III is mediocre and is the least complete one. Phantasy Star IV is the easiest to get into and has a good flow.
They have some good music. Love the intro to the title screen and the boss music:

Awesome games. IV is usually considered the best, followed by II and I, then III.
>no memorable OST
I like the OSTs in all of them, IV in particular has a great soundtrack
>characters
Plenty of memorable characters
>memes
True, haven't seen many PS memes except for PSO memes.
>waifus
Nei, Rika, Demi, Kyra, Alis, Alys, Shir, Anna, the list goes on. Even III has good girls like Mieu.
>It looks interesting
Definitely give the series a shot. Start with whichever looks the most interesting to you. IV is the easiest to get into and the most like modern RPGs, but if you like older RPGs I and II are great too. I actually like III, but it's an acquired taste. Feels very unfinished and unpolished, but has some cool ideas.

They're extremely grindy but if you love oldschool blobbers/dungeoncrawls, they're some of the best JRPGs of that era.
>no memorable ost, characters, memes or even waifus.
Not that kind of game, thank god.

PS1 has those Ultima/Wizardry-like dungeons, where you have to fall through a hidden trapdoor from the 9th to the 4th floor just to progress normally.

PS2 had a weird progression, meaning the whole game is dungeons and it only has 3 bosses (and you fight the first boss halfway through). It has an awesome story that has repercussions on 3 and 4 (and even the later, non-connected series), and an awesome plot twist at the end, to boot. People say the dungeons are really maze-like, but let me be real here: you can go through most of the dungeons by memorization alone, but the ones on the final world can be really annyoing. That's why the game came with a map. I don't remember if it was the 1st or 2nd dungeon of the final world, but its top floor was full of rocks and there were like 15 entrances/exits to this floor alone, and you had to navigate the previous floors and even fall down holes, like in PS1. Annoying.

PS3 is divisive because it forgoes the overarching plot and tries to be a "generations" thing, like Dragon Quest.

PS4 is awesome.

Both PS1 and PS2 are really marvelous, technically-wise. PS1 came out in 1987 and had those really beautiful (for the time) backgrounds and character drawings. PS2 came out in 1989 - look up a video of the final boss, and tell me that graphical effect came from a 1989 game. I'd say you're lying. It's still rather impressive.

Nothing wrong with finding appealing characters appealing, even if there is more to Phantasy Star than that.
