Newbaby here.
What was the point of Tetris, and how were you supposed to win?

Also Tetris discussion thread.

New to videogames in general, I see. Perhaps new to the concept of entertainment as a means to pass time. Perhaps new to life?

The first question is meaningless, it's a game. As for the second question you "win" by getting a better score than you have acheived before.

To get a high score

And you win obviously by filling up your playfield as fast as possible. Protip: Pushing down makes the tiles drop instantly

As a kid I thought you have to build something like those Russian cathedrals on the title screen.

Get a 100 lines on Game A (then lose).
Clear the lines target on Game B.

You will then see the end sequence, and can sleep happily knowing that you have won Tetris.

>> No.1017372

I wish Tetris 2 got more love. It's a fairly deep and engaging puzzle game, as opposed to just filling up line after line until the game gets too fast and you lose. Yet Tetris is the one they keep re-releasing.

The goal is to clear 40 lines in 40 seconds.

Might not be possible on the NES version though. Try Lockjaw or Nullpomino

Exactly. One is an incredible action puzzle game that's been loved for generations, and reproduced faithfully across almost every platform known to man.

And the other is Tetris 2.

> No, sorry, can't do it. Klax is actually kinda lame, except for original arcade Klax. Luckily the emulated one in Midway Arcade Treasures is accurate.

That's cute. I'll be over here watching the entire cathedral launch.

When I was growing up my mom got the cathedral to launch at like 3am and thought she was hallucinating, none of us believed her in the morning.

As a child I was always jealous of my brother's name. He had a five letter name, while mine is six, and his started with a C. His would always come up first in alphabetical order, and most high score games that didn't use initials would have 5 spaces, forcing me to use my initials anyway.
But in GB Tetris, my name fit snugly.
I won for once.

Navigate your squad of blocks towards the waypoints at the bottom of the screen (don't worry, if you don't move them they'll get there eventually on their own). Lining them all up sideways with give you a kill. As with everything, you want to do for double, triple, or even overkills if possible.
The game only has a zombies mode though. Major oversight, but it's still fun to see how far you can get.

>> No.1020605

The riot control mode (Game B) is alright: you need to suppress the crowd using limited men. It's a little short though.

I have a GBA SP carrying case, it fits 2 GBC + link cable perfectly next to each other, and some spare batteries and another game or 2 fit in a compartment on the back.
I've been bringing it over every time I visit friends, and they all love to play against me/eachother in little Tetris tournaments. One of em dug out his old gameboy, and also started a gameboy collection because of it.

You wouldn't believe the amount of times I've heard that excuse for why someone doesn't like a game of an older genre.

>> No.1024652

>>1024596

People believe that?

I know a lot of people that started playing games only as recently as the PS2, and they think games focusing on story is bullshit.

And kids don't want some boring story, they want to play a game.

>> No.1024663

Solitaire is about a spider (the player) who is forced by the spider queen to sort the cards thrown onto the table, each time hoping to be allowed to roam the world once more.
