Why do boomers think this is good gameplay?

>> No.10170256

I don't think it's good gameplay. I never thought Q2 was a good game.
I'm sure the whole Q2 hype was initiated by 3dfx in order to make people sell their kidneys for V2SLI.

For me it was just a cool shooter with a cool soundtrack. I was much more into quake 1 and still am desu.

All games were like this at that time due to limitations in hardware/software (especially memory) so games were forced to be efficient as possible.

seems the same as gameplay in 2023

Also, I think peoples attitudes toward video games in general has suffered kinda from the sheer amount of them being accessible and pretty much shoveled to your pc through whatever sales and giveaways. Games being just ok or good don't seem to be enough anymore.

It is all nostalgia goggles.

To understand it you would need to know the past.

I take it you have basic idea how for example dungeons looked in those games:

Daggerfall - Arena - Morrowind - Oblivion Skyrim

or how nasty point and click Sierra games (King Quest for example) were compared to Monkey Island?

Well you see Quake 2 was first of the mecrifull FPS games, it was the Skyrim or Monkey Island of FPS shooters. Back then Quake 2 was consideere much more playable then competition do to being easier (by having for example walls in game clearly labelled where they lead like ammo depot, warehouse block a block b etc).

Of course comapring Quake 2 to modern FPS games, that are pretty much like Disney raid (that gives maximum fun for minbimum effort) make Qauke 2 looks bad.

The good gameplay was the fun you had along the way to the keys

usually games will loop back through familiar rooms from unique vantage points, and I am a big fan of "proper 3D" games like that.
